First Quarter Chemistry Reflection

Ms. Donnafe Marquez Aganon or whom we all know as the “hugot” teacher in
Chemistry came in as our last subject giving us a cheerful ambiance and opening the
lesson about Chemistry. To be honest, just hearing the subject makes me think that it
will be a hard one. But she thought the subject enthusiastically for us to understand it
well and for us not to get bored.

This quarter I can say that all is well and calm. Even though she speaks fast I can
still understand her clearly and makes me more focused because I can’t miss a word.
Chemistry is an application of how life works in an every individual.

I learned in Chemistry on how to measure liquid substance in a graduated

cylinder. The Chromatography, which I think looks fun to watch, makes the water flow
upwards as I dip the paper with marker on it! Another one is separating mixtures that
thought us about evaporation, distillation, filtration etc. that made me think of factory of
water bottles because they have several processes on how they make H2O potable.

The accuracy and precision of applying it in our daily lives tells us what is lacking
and what is sufficient for there are times where we try for several times but with lack of
precision we fail.

In regards with significant figures, we can get the whole value of the non-zero
digits and the real numbers. Even though non-zero digit has no value, still they are
valuable and indispensible part in real numbers which makes them balanced.

The Subatomic particles of the atom which the nucleus is the center of an atom
and inside of it has protons and neutrons. Protons are positively charged particle and
the neutron that is the neutral particles. Outside of the nucleus are the electrons which
are the negatively charged particles of an atom.

The study of table of elements, molecular formula, Empirical Formula, etc. for me
all of these topics were discussed properly and in return we understood it well.

Also the very panicking part in Chemistry class was the “moving quiz”. In this quiz
every 30 seconds you have to move to the next question and it’s quite frustrating for
me. I got a low score because I think my weakness is analytical thinking and it made me
analyze the questions a bit slowly. The naming of the elements and their full meaning
made me realize how scientists became intelligent that they believe that Science is the
answer to life, but I believe otherwise that God is the source of everything that exist in
this world.

The last topic is the percentage error, calculating the percentages and how to
get it. And one more thing, she also recalls the discussion yesterday to make bridge for
us to catch up the lesson.

Through this quarter I learned fantastic insight that makes me think big about
life and of course, all the “hugots” that made me laugh.

“Every man who receives a liberal education now counts chemistry among the
most indispensable objects of his studies.” ---Antoine Francois Fourcroy
