Steam Players
For our statistics project, we chose to look at the number of users on the platform
“Steam” for the past 50 days. We went to the Steam website and pulled up the analytical data on
a time series graph that showed us all of the data points we needed. For calculating the means
and other data we rounded to the nearest tenth.

Mean, Median, Mode

For the mean, or average, we found that the average of our data was 14781386.6 people.
This means that for the 50 days selected, there was an average of 14781386.6 people using the
software.

The median was fairly close to our mean, which was 14277795.5 people. The difference
between the two was 503591.1 people. The median is the exact middle of our data set.
Considering we had an even number of data points, we took the average of the two data points in
the middle, giving us a decimal.

The mode did not apply to our data. Steam is a very popular platform, so two or more
days having the exact same number of people using it would be highly unlikely, and alas, there
are no modes (numbers occurring most frequently in the data set).

Trimmed Means

For the 5% trimmed mean we took 50 times 5% and found that the new average was
14719302.6 people. This process takes out the larger outliers if there were any, which we really
did not have in our data.

For the 10% trimmed mean we took 50 times 10% and found that the new average or
mean was 14672710.5 people. You would create a ten percent trimmed mean because it will get
rid of any outliers in the data set.
