The blue laws didn’t disappear
overnight. Even when they were
being declared unconstitutional,
there were those fighting a rear-
guard action every step of the way.
In some states it is still illegal to sell
beer, wine or spirits on Sunday.
For a long time in Texas, you could
keep a hardware or grocery store
open on Sunday, but there were
things you could not sell. A home
improvement store, for example,
could sell you a hammer, but they
couldn’t sell you any nails. (Or was
it the other way around?) Entire
aisles of products were roped off, so
you wouldn’t be tempted to pick up
something you shouldn’t have.
In Texas, some of the complaints
against the law came from Christians
and Jews who kept the Sabbath on
the seventh day. They had to quit
work on Saturday, and then were
prohibited from making it up on
Sunday. For a while, the law required
that you close your business one day
a week—it didn’t have to be Sunday,
but you had to rest. It was a good
idea, but hard to enforce. The state
finally gave up the fight.
The churches seem to have given
up as well. They rarely mention
the Sabbath anymore—it is the
“Lord’s Day.” It was not always that
way. From the very earliest times,
Christians observed the Sabbath with
their Jewish brethren. Jesus kept the
same Sabbath as the Jews, the early
church was composed entirely of
Jews, and there is not a hint in the
New Testament that they turned
away from Sabbath observance.
Early Christians routinely went
to the synagogue on the Sabbath.
The Scriptures were read there and
prayers were made. Afterward, they
retired to their homes for agape meals
and fellowship. Archaeologists have
found in Jerusalem what may have
been the first Christian synagogue.
It is not surprising that the early
church followed the form and
structure of the synagogue. Even
the development of church music—
plainsong, the Gregorian Chant—
had its roots in the cantor of a local
synagogue.
In a landmark work, From Sabbath
to Sunday (Rome, The Pontifical
Gregorian University Press), Samuele
Bacchiocchi outlines the process
of the change from the observance
of the Sabbath to the observance
of Sunday. The separation of the
western churches from Judaism
was a process that took many long
years to bring about. As late as the
Council of Laodicea (about A.D.
360), the western churches were still
struggling against Christians who
were observing the Sabbath day. One
of the canons of this council reads as

by resting on the Sabbath, but must
work on that day, honoring rather
the Lord’s day by resting, if possible,
as Christians” (Bacchiocchi, p. 217).
This philosophy underlines the
theology of most Christian churches
to this day. The Academic American
Encyclopedia says that “Christians
have generally considered the
Sabbath to be fulfilled by Christ’s
Sabbath rest in the tomb and
celebrate, instead, the Lord’s Day
(Sunday) as a weekly day of worship.
It is the first day of the new week,
symbolic of the unending Day of the
Lord, the day of Christ’s resurrection
and of His expected return. Some
Protestant groups have traditionally
called Sunday the Sabbath and apply
to it the Old Testament Sabbath
regulations (Sabbatarianism). In
many places these have been given
the force of civil law (Blue laws).”
Sunday as Sabbath day has faded in
recent years, but a hundred years
ago, it permeated Protestant worship.
Not long ago, a friend gave me an old
Presbyterian hymnal. It was rich in
a “Sabbath day” tradition. Listen to

The words were written by John
Newton in 1774 and set in the present
musical form in 1824 by Lowell
Mason. What is important about
the hymn is the recognition that the
day of worship and preaching is also
a day of rest—specifically a Sabbath
day. This stands in sharp contrast to
those who, like the Church of Christ,
call Sunday “The Lord’s Day” and
recognize that it is not the Sabbath of
the Fourth Commandment.
Yet another old hymn, this one
originally written in German in
1714, calls the Sabbath a day of rest:
Light of light, enlighten me,
Now anew the day is dawning;
Sun of grace the shadows flee;
Brighten thou my Sabbath morning;
With thy joyous sunshine blest,
Happy is my day of rest.
Several other hymns in the same
book advance the same theme: “O
Day of Rest and Gladness,” “This
is the Day of Light,” and “Praise
Our Father for This Sunday.” Bear
in mind that these hymns are not
referring to the Sabbath of the Fourth
Commandment: “Six days shalt thou
labor and do all thy work: But the
seventh day is the Sabbath of the
Lord thy God: In it thou shalt not do
any work.” These hymns are about
the first day of the week, Sunday,
which is perceived as the day of the
resurrection of Christ.
I was talking about this with some
friends and commented about how
times have changed. You rarely
hear Protestants talking about the
“Sabbath” any more. One lady, a
mother of 12 children who is old
enough to remember said, “I can tell
you when it changed. I remember
it clear as day—it was during World
War II.” She commented on how
different it was. A war was on, and
the war effort required hard work,
around the clock, seven days a week.
After the war, the Sabbath day was a
dead issue.
I suppose she is right, but Sunday
as Sabbath couldn’t stand the light
of day in any case. The emergence
of modern seventh day Sabbath
keeping churches made the position
untenable. Even if the day of the
resurrection had been on a Sunday,
there was never any biblical support
for observing the resurrection every
Sunday—much less for a change
establishing Sunday in place of the
Sabbath day.
But the passing of even the wrong
Sabbath day from the lives of
Americans was a great pity. Jesus
said that “the Sabbath was made for
man”—recognizing that man needs
a day of rest, reflection, prayer, and
worship. It is necessary to command
man, after all, to stop working.
Otherwise, he might never find the
time to come to know God.

A Subjective
Sabbath

What precisely is the Sabbath? If you
ask Google, it spits out about 63,600,000
results (give or take a few thousand)
and an interesting definition at the top
of the page from Oxford. It states the
following;
Type it in for yourself and see. Some
of the first couple of web pages
listed are, “Sabbath – Wikipedia”,
“Sabbath Truth: What day is the
Sabbath and does it matter?”, and
“Sabbath|Judaism|Britannica”. Not
one website on the first page of results
references the delight the Sabbath day
is—only arguments.
I jumped over to YouTube and typed
in “Sabbath” and it was even more
pronounced. The top results were all
proponents of the Sabbath day being
on Saturday, (which is good) but
again they seem to only focus on the
Saturday vs. Sunday argument. One
such page, “Hope Through Prophecy”,
stated, “Many sincere Christians have
been deceived into accepting a false
Sabbath that was never endorsed by
the Bible”. The man goes on at some
length to make the point that anyone
who doesn’t “keep the right day” will
not enter the Kingdom. Whether you
agree or not, to declare someone will
not inherit the Kingdom of God for
any reason not specifically identified
in Scripture (1 Cor. 6:9, “Know ye not
that the unrighteous shall not inherit
the kingdom of God? Be not deceived:

neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor
adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers
of themselves with mankind”; Gal. 5:21,
“Envyings, murders, drunkenness,
revellings, and such like: of the which
I tell you before, as I have also told you
in time past, that they which do such
things shall not inherit the kingdom
of God.) smacks of breaking the third
commandment.
This isn’t an article on what day the
Sabbath is or how it was or wasn’t
changed. Smarter minds than mine
have unequivocally answered that
question in the form of big books,
doctoral theses, and ecumenical
conferences. This is an article about
how we go about sharing it and its
purposefully subjective nature.
I’ll start by asking you one simple
question: Why do you keep the Sabbath?
Besides the standard reply of, “Because
it is commanded”, I am curious as to
the deeper meaning of why we keep the
Sabbath holy. People give some of the
most interesting and revealing answers
to this question. They range from, “I
keep the Sabbath because I am made
in the image of God” to “Because the
creator of the universe set aside that
day to be holy and set apart for rest and
worship, picturing the ultimate rest
of His kingdom.” One of my favorite
answers was, “I keep the Sabbath
because it’s an anchor for my life and
helps to keep the flow of my life intact.”
I love how poetic people become when
describing the Sabbath. Their eyes
light up and the language they use
conveys emotion through allusions,
analogies and metaphors. You can feel
how much the Sabbath means to them.
It’s important to them not only because
it’s a commandment, but because of
reasons that are unique to them. Their
Sabbath is something personal and
sometimes its meaning can only be put
into words via poetic language—not
prose.
There are some interesting ideas about
the Sabbath revealed in Isaiah 58:13-14,
“If you keep from desecrating the
Sabbath, from doing whatever you
want on my holy day; if you call the
Sabbath a delight, and the holy day
of the Lord honorable; if you honor it,
not going your own ways, seeking your
own pleasure, or talking business; then
you will delight in the Lord, and I will
make you ride over the heights of the
land, and let you enjoy the heritage of
your father Jacob.” For the mouth of
the Lord has spoken.
The first Hebrew word for “delight”
used here is, “`ōneg”, and it also
means pleasant. Please tell me what is
delightful or pleasant? I venture the
answers to this question are myriad
and yet singular to the individual.
What is delightful or pleasant to
you might not be the same for your
brother or sister. I’m reminded of the
aphorism, “Beauty lies in the eyes of
the beholder.” Paradoxically, although
this relativistic look at the Sabbath
permits considerable moral latitude
in how to comply with keeping the
Sabbath, it also makes it more precise
and binding—not my pleasure, but yet
still must be a pleasure and delight.
We, His children, must determine how
we are to make it a delight.
What’s interesting about the second
“delight” in verse 14 (`ānag) is its
meaning—which means “to be soft or
pliable”. Keeping the Sabbath makes
you pliable to the lord. I find that to be
fascinating. The Sabbath is supposed
to assist God in changing what we find
a delight—“to delight in the Lord” and
not just in other things.
There are some pretty clear-cut
guidelines as to what the Sabbath is
not. It’s described in Deuteronomy
5:14 (KJV),
“But the seventh day is the sabbath of
the lord thy God: in it thou shalt not
do any work [.]”
As clear as this is, there is still some play
in it. For instance, one fine Sabbath
morning I was setting up for services
at our church. One of the early birds
was talking with me about a new power
tool he just purchased. This power tool
got me thinking about my business and
how I could use one to do more work in
less time, improving our bottom line. I
told my friend, “I better stop thinking
about this, because now I’m working”.
He replied, “How is thinking about
work, working?” To which I quipped,
“You kidding me? Thinking is some of
my best work!”
We both laughed, and got back to
laboriously moving chairs and tables
for services. This is why I chuckle at
red-faced legalists who argue with
brethren on the specifics of Sabbath-
keeping. The only thing we seemed to
really have nailed down is when it starts,
and even that has come into question
lately (sunset vs. dark). So forgive me
if I tread lightly when explaining the
Sabbath to the curious.
To those interested in drawing lines,
remember what Jesus said to the
Pharisees about the disciples breaching
the Sabbath? You can find it in Matthew
12:1-8. In verses 5-8 he states,
“Or have ye not read in the law, how
that on the sabbath days the priests
in the temple profane the sabbath,
and are blameless? But I say unto
you, That in this place is one greater
than the temple. But if ye had known
what this meaneth, I will have mercy,
and not sacrifice, ye would not have
condemned the guiltless. For the Son
of man is Lord even of the sabbath
day.”
Jesus is telling them that technically
the priests are “breaking the Sabbath”
yet are blameless. I am reading into
this account that Jesus looks into the
heart of the individual, then judges
whether they are complying with his
commandment. He sees you making
a judgment call on how to call the
Sabbath a delight, and I have good news
for you; He wants mercy not sacrifice.
The One greater than the temple has
last say in the matter and states in
Mark 2:27, “The sabbath was made for
man, and not man for the sabbath.”
When I am in a situation that is
questionable in regards to Sabbath-
keeping (or anything for that matter)
I pray for wisdom and guidance—

immediately. I think taking the time to
quickly call out to God not only proves
your sincerity, but is literally one of the
only things you can do.
It is one thing to provide scripture
(meekly) that helps support individuals
to see their behavior as destructive or
against what is written in the Bible, but
too often I find individuals hatefully
attacking well-meaning Christians
about the “truth of the Sabbath”.
This attack is usually a half-baked
history lesson containing Constantine,
the Council of Nicaea, and some
references to vagaries in the church
through history. Both usually walk
away confused and in disbelief—one,
why the other couldn’t understand
something so simple; the other, why
some place so much importance on the
day they choose to worship God.
The more we try to objectify the
Sabbath, the more we miss its point.
This could be a test commandment
to see how we internalize this highly
subjective law.
If our ultimate aim is to lead others
to Christ, we must consider how we
deliver our communications. As
Ron Dart said, “Christianity isn’t an
argument. It’s a way of life”. Describe
to people your way of life—how much
peace you feel keeping the Sabbath and
the joy you experience from honoring
His ways. Let your eyes light up and
your enthusiasm spilleth over until
they ask themselves the question, “I
wonder if they’re for real?” They might
just chase that question into a seat at
your local congregation.

which promotes cooperation between
Sabbath-keeping believers and provides
faith-building resources. To this end,
we encourage, educate, and empower
individuals to pursue their God-given
purpose.
The BSA was founded in 1945 to facilitate
fellowship between Sabbath keepers. We
believe that working together will help us
all accomplish more for the Kingdom of
God. We have a catalogue of educational resources as well as other avenues
to accomplish our purpose. Since 1950, we have published a free, bi-monthly
magazine called The Sabbath Sentinel. Our January-February issue will be the
600th edition of our magazine! It is one of the older magazines in the US.
In 2015, a new board of directors was elected. One of our goals was to increase
our online/social media outreach. God’s grace has empowered us to do
just that. Our present website, www.biblesabbath.org, reaches over 60,000
individuals a year. We created a public outreach Facebook page called The
Sabbath Sentinel; it now has over 2,000 followers. We reach as many as 10,000
people a week. We also have an online blog, www.sabbathsentinel.org. It
has exciting articles covering topics such as the latest research on Sabbath
history, Biblical insight to defend your faith, and Christian living. Our current
website, www.biblesabbath.org, is undergoing an upgrade that we hope will
be completed soon.

The Kenya Effort

Faithful Children’s Centre and Wisdom Academy
CEM is happy to announce our active involvement with the Faithful Children’s
Centre (FCC)—an orphanage in Ogembo, Kenya—and Wisdom Academy
(WA), an affiliated school for the orphans and other destitute children in that
community.
There are also currently six churches affiliated with FCC and WA that use CEM’s
hymnal, YEA lessons, and Ron Dart’s messages and study materials provided by
us at no cost. It gladdens our heart to support our Sabbatarian brothers and
sisters so far away.
FCC and WA were bountifully blessed by the gift of a well this past spring thanks
to the fundraising efforts of the Child of God Rescue. This may provide a source of
financial support depending on the development of a well-thought-out business
plan. There are two water business opportunities currently being investigated
that require substantial investments.
It has been suggested that Wisdom Academy, the #1 Primary school in the district,
become a for-profit school instead of a school for the orphans and destitute
children. This suggestion is currently being reviewed as this change would
remove one of the only organizations providing education for the destitute in
that area. Sadly, the families of the destitute children make about $30 a month
and already pay for their own uniforms and exam fees.
That leaves FCC and WA very much in need of monthly funding for the orphanage
food, salaries for the 13 WA teachers, and staff salaries at the orphanage/
school. There are also special needs for the 2020 school year which include new
textbooks and student uniforms.
