Introduction to Literature

Silent Reading Response (SRR) Instructions

Learning Targets:
Students will be able to:
 independently read and comprehend literature at grade level (RL9.10)
 initiate and participate in a discussion building on others' ideas (SL9.1)
 introduce a topic (W9.2a)
 cite textual evidence to support analyses (RI9.1)
 provide a conclusion (W9.2f)
 write routinely over an extended period of time (W9.10)

Directions:
1. Read silently every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 15 minutes
2. After the timer goes off, take out your Silent Reading Response Sheet
3. Write an I.C.E. response in third person; avoid “I”
4. If you are absent:
o You are responsible to read and write a SRR.
o You must write a minimum of three (3) sentence summary.
o You can use your silent reading book or a text of your choice.
5. Be prepared to share in pairs, groups or class

Rubric:

Each entry is worth 5 points:


1 point: Fill-in the correct SSR #, date & page #s, title and author
3 points: Write an I.C.E. response using standard English and proper grammar; indent
1 point: Highlight correctly formatted MLA citation

Note: You will start out with 20 points for actively reading per quarter.
One (1) points will be deducted every time you are not actively reading.

I.C.E. response includes:

Introduce the citation:


 include genre, title and author’s first and last name; plus, brief and
concise summary
In the essay, “The Talk” Gary Soto draws upon the memories of his childhood.

Cite evidence directly from the text:


 Provide quote in MLA format; don’t start sentence with quote, must be introduce
 Introduce sentence with speaker or author’s last name then comma or
colon

4. Highlight citation

 Explain reason quote demonstrates your point without using “I”
 Example: This provides that… This illustrates…In other words…
This shows that they are self-conscience about their future and fitting in.

Title: The Talk Author: Gary Soto

In the essay, “The Talk” Gary Soto draws upon the memories of his
childhood. Specifically, Soto focuses on two boys who are worried about
their appearance: “We were twelve, with lean bodies that were beginning
to grow in weird ways” (522). This shows that they are self-conscience
about their future and fitting in.
