ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to compare Grade 12 Student’s Internet use and

library use. It was based on the assumption that Grade 12 Students used the

internet more than the library. The findings of the study indicate that Grade 12

Student’s do not bypass the library in satisfying their information need. They use

both the library and it’s also the most preferred source of information. Student’s also

make use of source such as the media, Lectures notes and interaction with their

lectures, Teachers, Parents and Friends most library services are well patronized

while most internet services are much underutilized. The recommendations of the

study indicate that use one formula to gathered data, therefore it enhance the

researcher to understand and to gather data in an easiest way, add more

respondents on your study to become more realistic and credible, focus on your

topic specially when choosing an accurate are in terms of adequate information and

reliability of the study. The researcher adopted convenient sampling techniques to

select the sample of the study. Data was collected by survey and interview. Collect

data was statistical analyzed and interpret using the statistical techniques, although

internet usage was more than the library, hence the internet was the most preferred

source of information.

Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Knowledge is one of the biggest factors to know if the person is literate or not.

In fact, without knowledge, they cannot be as intelligent or smart as others.

According to Dunn (2013), They take information and ideas from books, TV, The

internet, our family, friends, teachers and many other sources. With the Help of the

information, they can gain knowledge. Books and internet mentioned above. It only

means that these two sources was one and still helpful way for others when it comes

in taking in information. Students nowadays are the ones who need to seek

information about anything because of the different assignment researches, and

many other activities they have. These days, most of them use two (2) different ways

in searching information Ranganathan (2000), The “Father of Science Library” said

that “a library is a public institution of establish charged with the care of a collection

of books and the duty of making them accessible to those who required use them

and the task of converting every person in its neighborhood into a habitual library

goers and a regular reader”.

And also, the main function of it are: (1) help the life- long self-education of

one and all, (2) furnish up to date facts and information on all subjects to one and all,

(3) distribute in an unblessed and balanced way all sources of recorded reviews and

thought to one and all, and serve as a helper in the discharge of their political

responsibilities in respect of local, national, and international affairs, (4) Contributes

1
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

to productive drive by information to management of the latest trends in diverse

enterprises by sloughing back in the minds or researchers, designers and

technologists, every piece of relevant new thoughts promptly, (5) preserve the

literary remains of humanity for posterity as vehicles of culture and source materials

for antiquarian research, (6) Provides to one and all worthy and elevating use of

leisure, and (7) in general, work for continued social wellbeing as the agency in

charge of all socialized thought. With this information, they can conclude that if

people use books as their source of information, they are assured that the

information they get are legit.

Aside from libraries, Internet is also a very useful way for others. According to

Strauss (2003). The internet is a whole network that is connected to each either.

Some computers in this network are storing files, such as web pages which can be

accessed by all network computers. In the internet, they can visit different websites

that may help them if they need information about something that they wanted to

know. Fitzpatrick (2007), listed the Top 15 Most Influential Websites of All Time and

there are: Match.com, Reddit, Pandora, Wikileaks, Yahoo, Craigslist, Youtube,

Facebook, Wikipedia, Amazon, and Goggle. This websites have more visitors other

than the others and they can notice that the Google is the most visited website

among them. Knowing that this websites is a tool for searching and with the help of

this tool. People can easily access to the internet to find whatever they wanted.

Consider this two ways of finding information. There is nothing wrong of using them.

But, how can they know if the information on the book was still applicable for us?

2
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

They know that information is not forever and it can’t be always be right. It is

changeable depending on the time that they need it.

This study will show the comparative study of the use of the internet and the

library as the source of information.

Theoretical Framework

Theory of Library

According to University of Greenwich (2016). Using a large academic library

for the first time can be a daunting experience. With literally thousands of books, e-

books, online journals, and other resources, tracking down the sources of

information They needed for the academic work can sometimes seem confusing and

time consuming.

However, learning to use the Library and its resources is an important skill to

master. By finding and using good quality information in their assignments, They

demonstrating those marketing their work opinions are informed and built on

research conducted by experts in their field. This is an essential skill to demonstrate

in order to attract top marks for they work. Here they can find some clear and

practical guidance on how to make effective use of library resources to find the

information they need for your studies and get maximum benefit from what is

available.

Books will prove to be an invaluable source of information for your studies.

There will be particular books that are recommended by your tutors via your reading

3
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

lists, but you may also want to do your own wider reading and research using books

on the subjects you are studying. Books can provide valuable background

information, an in-depth overview of a subject, an explanation of theories and a

comparison of differing ideas, approaches and opinions. They will not be surprised

to hear that there are lots of books in the University of Greenwich libraries. The

easiest way to check whether we have the book you need, whether it is currently

available, and where exactly you can find it, is to search our library catalogue.

Find out more about using the Library and borrowing books. In addition to the

print books in the libraries, they also have an extensive collection of nearly 13,000

full text e-books. E-books are great because they can access them at any time and

quickly search the whole of the text for relevant information. Many e-books can also

be downloaded to their own device so that they can read them offline. Searching

tools like the library catalogue, Journal, News paper and Library Search can help

them to discover the some authentic information and other sources that the libraries

have.

Theory of Internet

According to Sahin.et.al (2010), the most effective communication resources,

computers and the Internet, are part of our daily life and have become one of the

important tools in the education. The Internet helps transfer information between

different points therefore this satiation makes the Internet a very powerful

information system. People in different age groups and jobs, students and

academicians who do scientific research and prepare projects prefer using the

4
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

Internet because it is the easiest, fastest, and cheapest ways of accessing

necessary information. Even though the Internet is a very important and

indispensable source for students, the issue of whether the referenced source is

trustworthy and/or credible, has been raised. This is because there is no control on

any particular piece of information published through the Web, in opposition to the

scientific and professional journals published by the scientific institutions, business

world and the organizations known to the public.

Many of the sites on the Internet enable anybody to submit any kind of

information without being controlled, and many of the sites known as reliable are

restricted to open access for commercial purposes or security requirements (IP

restriction, membership). So that Internet limits the accessibility for students and

deprives them of these sites. Because of these constraints, information resources

used by students are generally untrustworthy or students have been inaccurately

forwarded.

In the theory of library discussed the findings and quality information they are

demonstrating. Library is an essential skills to demonstrate in order to attack top

marks for other works. Some books will prove that the source of information is more

reliable in terms of studies and other paper works. Many researchers using library as

their searching tools like journals, catalogs, and newspaper.

Then, the theory of internet is a effective communication resources internet

helps us to transfer information between different points. Internet is a powerful

information system. Many of the sites on the internet can anybody submit of

information without being controlled. Internet is reliable but restricted to open access

for commercial purposes or security requirements.

that the Grade 12 students of St. Gregory College of Valenzuela using internet and

library can help them as a source of their information.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to create a comparative study on the preferred source of

information of Grade 12 students in St. Gregory College of Valenzuela. Whether

library and internet.

1. What are the number of Grade 12 students use:

a. Library and other books

b. Internet

2. What are the possible reasons of the students choosing this source of

information?

Significance of the Study

This research is significant for the students because student before is not

using internet they just using library as their primary source of information but now

they’re using both Internet and library as their searching tools, the result of this study

will give them chance to explore more gathered new ideas to improve their

knowledge. Meanwhile, this research serves as their tool that will help them in

teaching different subject also it will serve as their reference to know the latest

information and what is the most authentic source of data.

To School Administrations, this research gives them an idea in how they can

help the teaching staff to solve the problem of what is the most authentic source of

data knowing that students nowadays is quickly believe the rumors. And Lastly,

Future Researcher, This research can be a useful reference for them who would

plan to make any related study. They can apply will give the people an idea on how

they can help themselves to identify what is the most authentic source of information

in terms of using internet and library.

Scope and Limitation

The main focus of the study is on the school of St. Gregory College of

Valenzuela. The participants are Grade 12 Senior High School students 10

representative each sections who determine the comparative study use of the

internet and the library as the source of information.

The respondents are Grade 12 Senior High School Students strands of ABM,

GAS, HUMSS, and STEM, for the researcher to firm and determine the comparative

study use of the internet and library as the source of information. The respondents

are chosen random to answer the survey questionnaire with 10 response

representative in each strands, because this study was too expensive to print more

than 10 so the researcher conducted it just to prevent expenses and to manage the

time of the researcher.

This study is for Grade 12 Senior High School students only, Junior High

School students are not involve in the research. The purpose of the study is to

formulate on what are the number of Grade 12 students using library and internet as

the source of information.

Definition of Terms

Comparative Analysis – Comparative analysis is a study that compares and contrast

two things: two life insurance policies, two sports figures, two presidents, etc. The

study can be done to find the crucial differences between two very similar things or

the similarities between two things that appears to be different on the surface. (Ask

Media Group, 2019)

Library- “A Library is a collection of resources in a variety of formats that is (1)

organized by information professionals or other experts who 920 provide convenient

physical, digital, bibliographic, or intellectual access and (3) offer targeted service

and programs (4) with the mission of educating, informing, or entertaining a variety

of audience (5) and the goal of stimulating individual learning and advancing society

as a whole.” (Eberhart, 2010)

Internet – The internet is a global wide area network that connects computer

systems across the world includes several high-bandwidth data lines that comprise

the internet “Backbone”. (Sharped Production, 2019)

Chapter II

REVIW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Local Literature

The PUP websites (1998) have new internet and web technologies which can

help visitor’s information and online services that is relevant and useful to them.

Technology is the factor to the learning of the student, not only to learn but also to

renew something to learn technology was broad and some students was curious

about on that technology can do to other things so that it may expect that 12 every

generation will have a new invented in using technology especially they will not do

that if they don’t browse in books.

Book have a trusted spot in our culture as legitimate sources of information,

having vetted by an entire network of people, the technology does not always have

that same quality assurance but it does have the wisdom of the crowds, replying that

at least one reader will catch and point out the mistake. Those whom respondent’s,

Followed by “printers” (who dislike reading on a screen). Technologies (who

embrace the advantages of electronic media). The smallest category pragmatist

(who see advantages to both print and electronic media but care more about the

content than the container.

According to Navarette (2015) The library and the internet are repositories of

our collective knowledge. Libraries and the internet host the culture heritage, the

memory of the present and past civilization. Libraries and internet are major sources

10
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

of information that researchers commonly use, for purposes assignment and to

obtain reliable information that can be utilized to researchers. A library is a sea of

books, educational magazines, news papers and so on for people to dive into,

explore, discover, and build knowledge. Unlike library, the internet is a universe of

computer networks where researchers can search for any kind of information, bad or

good simply by opening the network.

As a sources of information for students, libraries and the internet have ,any

similar but different aspects such a time, reliability, and accessibility.

According to Toplina (2017) Public libraries providing a vast range of

information to U.E students from the stacks of non-fiction books, to racks of

newspapers and magazines, to shelves of reference materials and government

documents, libraries have been the place to go to find answers to questions.

The internet has challenged libraries’ traditional role by providing a seemingly

limitless amount of information for only the price of an internet connection and a

computer. Now from one’s own living room, it is possible to track down a

government document, look up an article in the archives of a magazine, a traditional

encyclopedia or even in the newest user-created encyclopedia, Wikipedia. Even

asking for and getting help for all manner of questions or circumstances is now

possible online, at any hour of the day or night.Libraries have rushed to adapt

themselves to the internet age, adding computers with digital catalogs of library

holdings as well as free internet access. Libraries have worked to become the place

11
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

to go for those who cannot afford a computer or an internet connection, or who need

training or help in computer and internet literacy. To explore this changing landscape,

the U.E students and the National University partnered with funding from the U.S.

Institute of Museum and Library Services to explore the role of libraries, the internet

and other avenues in how Americans seek information and assistance on matters

often related to the government, how well they succeed in their searches and how

they see their efforts in the future.

The internet in U.E long ago moved from the province of the technology

sophisticates to part of life in Main Street Caloocan.

According to Harter (1980) “a literature search is an attempt to identify, locate

and synthesize completed research reports, articles, books and other materials

about the specific problems of a research topic. The research literature and

subsequent review can be of value to researchers by helping them to regard their

studies as contributions to a large topic of which the inquiry at hand is only a part.”

Defending the views of Harter the literature search was conducted on the broader

area, collection management, changing trend in university library collections, its

impact on collection development policies, archiving, licensing agreements and

digitalization. The Internet contains an endless supply of knowledge and information

that allows you to learn about almost any topic or question you may have. Using

a search engine like Google, you can ask virtually any question and find a web

page with an answer to that question. There are also millions of videos on sites

12
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

like YouTube that help explain various topics and even online courses that can be

taken to help teach you about many different subjects.

According to De Leon (2008) Library has always been described as the heart

of the university. It has been called the brain of the academic body. The scholar's

Work Shop. Library has become so important that renowned scholars judged the

quality of education by the quality of library service in the university. But in today’s

scenario the position of the library in the academic institution does not seem to be

the same. With the development of technology, in particular information and

communication technologies more comprehensive relevant and easily searchable

subject directories and search engine like Yahoo and Google and ubiquity of the

web have resulted in a generation of students who now perceive the Internet as the

most familiar, convenient and expedient source of information.

The Internet eases of communication to the researchers; because it serves as

a guidance and original source of information. It is very easy to access and at the

same time saves time thereby allowing an individual to manager his/her resources

better and effectively. Additionally, the Internet is very convenient because an

individual can easily carry out a research work at home with much comfort and

convenience. The internet is a valuable search tool and has been informative for

academic research, as it helps significantly to improve research skills, and makes

learning visual and easy to follow.

According to Santos (2003) The Internet has rapidly become one of the most

powerful global sources of a wide range of information presenting many possibilities.

13
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

for librarians and information providers to seek information relating to their

day‐to‐day activities, from buying books and serials to teaching information literacy

skills. This paper delineates how libraries can benefit from the use of Internet

resources to enhance the quality of their various services, at the same time saving

both money and time. Some strategies for identifying valuable and relevant online

resources are presented; and a number of most useful Internet tools and resources

that are of great interest to librarians and information workers are discussed.

Internet is so much essential. According to Almahit (2015) Study is most

essential part of a student’s life. So internet helps students to find out the solution of

their problems. So internet gives so many benefits to students. They can use it for

their career growth and get knowledge. There are so many sites which are providing

free lectures also. The students who are not able to get study material in the specific

location like rural areas they can easily get It through online marketing systems.

According to PUP websites (2017) The Internet is a powerful tool for assisting

students and educators with conducting research. Going to a library and searching

through a card catalog by hand can be laborious and inefficient compared to

searching for the same information on a computer. Many institutions offer online

library systems which allow students to find information on books using lab

computers, or to access databases of scholarly articles that they can read online.

Academic libraries encompass research libraries, baccalaureate, masters and

doctoral degree granting institutions, junior and community colleges, and distance

learning programs of higher education. Academic libraries work together with other

14
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

members of their institutional communities to participate in, support, and achieve the

educational mission of their institutions by teaching the core competencies of

information literacy the abilities involved in identifying an information need,

accessing needed information, evaluating, managing, and applying information, and

understanding the legal, social, and ethical aspects of information use. The

systematic delivery of instructional programs and services should be planned in

concert with overall strategic library planning, including the library’s budgeting

process. Such planning may also involve strategizing with other campus units to

deliver collaboratively designed programming. Research has shown that the

academic library is a positive influencing factor on students' academic success.

According to De Lasalle (2019) The Internet has revolutionized the human

life as it has entered in every home, business, school, and Government office

throughout the world today. Globalization owes much to the Internet; for it has

reduces the distances because of its swift communication system. It is evident from

the history of scientific inventions that the Internet is incomparable to other

inventions of science as most of other inventions are interlinked with it. Particularly,

the field of education has been widely influenced by the Internet as it has created

convenience and swiftness in this field, especially in the field of research. Everyone,

regardless of one’s age, is being benefited by the Internet. There are definitely some

advantages and disadvantages of the Internet for research purposes.

The library occupies a very important place in school. With its books suited to

the interests and aptitude of students of different age group, with its magazines,

15
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

periodicals, news papers and with its calm and tranquil atmosphere it has a special

call to the students who go there and quench their thirst for reading the material

which cannot be provided to them in the class room. Here they find an environment

which is conductive to the building up of habit of self learning. The library is the

center of the intellectual and social activities of school. The library has got very

wholesome effect over the work of school.

According to Jayanayth (2018) A library plays a very important role in

promoting the progress of knowledge. There are many people who love reading. But

they can’t afford to buy books because the prices of books are very high. So when

one becomes a member of a library, he can borrow valuable books. A member can

borrow two books at a time and he can keep it with him for two weeks. Libraries are

particularly useful for poor children. Even those who are better off can’t afford to buy

all the books they require for their studies. For instance, invaluable books like

Encyclopedias and large dictionaries cannot be purchased.

The internet is the source of knowledge. All kinds of information is present in

it. it is easily accessed and can be searched more to get more additional knowledge.

Information like educational related, government laws, market sales, stocks and

shares, new creations etc. is gathered from a single place.

According to Rodriguez (2010) Libraries define, develop, and measure

outcomes that contribute to institutional effectiveness and apply findings for

purposes of continuous improvement. Libraries articulate how they contribute to

student learning, collect evidence, document successes, share results, and make

16
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

improvements. Libraries articulate how they contribute to student learning, collect

evidence, document successes, share results, and make improvements. The

Internet is a marvelous invention. Because of its introduction into education and its

availability to just about anyone, the world will probably never be the same.

People of all ages can log on 24/7 in search of whatever they need. The elderly

woman who is unable to drive can log onto the Internet and shop for groceries, fill a

prescription or even chat with her grandchildren via web cam.

Local Studies

According to Espinosa (2006), students can learn through the new

convergence of technology, students get to experience the best of both worlds. They

can be tutored in schools and get additional lessons through the web. It is clearly

stated of the author that we can learn through technology because in the Philippine

student had their own way to learn or to get an additional learning in their academic

purpose. The author also study about the learning standard of the other country like

US, California, and Oklahoma in using technology and because of that Philippines

have do the same way when it comes to applying education technology.

According to Mapua (2016) The benefits of reading book that one of the best

ways to exercise the mind, to improve knowledge and also to keep the 12 impact,

but it also does a host of good for us. Both internet and books should go hand in

hand so that he next generation enjoys a better future. Students need to balance the

things on their studying.

17
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

According to Almario (2015) The modern world is so fast that people don’t

have the time to read books so they preferred internet. The internet facilities is

available almost in every book and corner of the world. The availability of this facility

on Cell phones has made in the path easier. Despite the comfort provided by this

revolutionizing facilities in the internet. There are some people who will loved to be

engage in reading book, it is because, people sometimes find in difficult to search on

the internet. So they preferred to read books or journals available in the library, to be

on the safer side.

Both Internet and books should go hand in hand so that the next generation

enjoy a better future.

According to Robinson (2006) simplistically, libraries and archives came into

being to provide a central location for hard-to-find, scarce, expensive or unique

material. Scarcity of information is the basis for the modern library. In countries

where information continues to be scarce, a library's role is still unambiguous. In

some countries where access to information is now akin to access to electricity or

water, the reason to have freestanding storehouses of a subset of all information is

harder to articulate. Libraries in such countries can provide access to more

information than any user could want or need. Rangathan's rule "for every reader,

his or her book," might be now redefined as "for every reader, huge amounts of

freefloating content, anywhere, anytime. We now live in the information age where

access to many Internet resources is just a few clicks away. The Internet is a

technology which has gained more popularity in many countries across the world

18
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

and India, is no exception. The Internet as a medium of communication and source

of information has enabled students, researchers, business information seekers and

information professionals to access information to enhance their work and

communicate effectively.

According to San Juan De Letran (2017) the library contains the sources of

information accessible to a community of a reference or borrowing. Internet sources,

if done incorrectly, may put the quality of a student’s works into questions. With

thousands of site in the internet, only a sizeable amount of substantive materials on

the internet is available for free consumption; most of it businessoriented.

There are the sites that offer journals, periodicals, and others academic

materials, and ask for money in return.

According to Garcia (2010) Libraries are useful I information gathering. He

stressed that all the information is factual in libraries as books underwent

consultation, reviews, and revisions by different experts. “Some information found on

the internet are nit reliable because people try to mock others through false

information,” he says, adding that the library is still the best place to look when doing

any form of research.

According to UP website (2018) Modern life has become easier and the

people of the world have to thanks to the immense contribution of the internet

technology to communication and information sharing. There is no doubt that

internet has made our life become easier and more convenient. We can use internet

to communicate with people around the world, doing business by using internet,

19
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

make new friend and know different cultures, searching information, studying and

etc. The internet not only allows for communication through email but also ensures

easy availability of information, images, and products amongst other things. Every

day the internet continues to provide a new facility, something new that is immensely

convenient and that makes life more easier for web users. However, the internet

also contains some unwanted elements or disadvantages. The following are the

advantages and disadvantages of the internet.

Libraries are still the best place to find primary and scholarly sources, an

essential element in any research project. And if a library does not have its own copy

of a source, it can borrow resources from other libraries through interlibrary loan.

Libraries are staffed with librarians who are often subject matter experts or at least

knowledgeable about their own collections. Getting a librarian's assistance can

mean having access to resources you never would have known about. And library

collections are heavily vetted. Students can be sure that the majority of items in a

library are reliable sources.

According to Reymundo (2019) A library is divided into a number of sections

or departments on the basis of subjects; history, math’s, science, commerce, English

and a number of other sections and sub-sections; poetry, fiction, drama etc. The

required books can be traced from the index card. In library everything is arranged

orderly so no confusion at all. Libraries provide the students very healthy

environment. In a library atmosphere is very calm and disciplined. It helps students

to keep very good concentration on their studies. Libraries are the only place where

20
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

we are free from all conventions because reading is absolutely a matter of personal

choice. Freedom is the keyword for the libraries. Readers are allowed to read what

they like and also read the book according to their own manner. Nobody would

check them or disturb them. Since everything is systematic and the atmosphere is

calm so students can gain more in less time. One can save time and energy

studying in libraries.

A library plays a very vital role throughout the life. Particularly for students

library is very important. Some of the books are very rare which are not available in

the market but they can be availed from libraries. Some books like dictionary,

Encyclopedia and no other subjects are very costly. Students can get such type of

books issued from libraries. In library students can find the latest and the oldest

editions of books. Sometimes we require those books which are now out of print, so

we may arrange such books from libraries. There are various books on different

topics, written in various languages by various writers of different ages. Therefore

first of all one should make a good choice of books for oneself because library in

itself is like a conglomeration a heap of mixed collection of books.

Hence, library is an essential part of the student’s life. They should take full

advantages of the libraries available. Students should also remember that they

should not misuse the library books by marking them with ink or tearing off their

pages, required by the students. Library books must be kept properly. The Services

are used by the people to get information, do online works, discussions, e-mailing,

video chatting, voice calling, social activities, news channels, online booking and

21
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA

many other hundred and thousand terms that we use with the help of internet. In

every country there are many companies that provide the services of net in different

rates. There get benefits from full functions you need to have a laptop, mobile or PC.

According to EDUSOFT (2018) The importance of school library cannot be

over emphasized. A library is an important source of knowledge to young minds in

school. It develops the important habit of reading among the students. Every school

should have a library. The school library plays a great role in the life of students by

serving as the store house of knowledge.

The importance of a library in a school cannot be over emphasized. While

the role of the school library remains constant, its design, digital platform, strategies

and tools could change as technology changes.

According to Buenaventura (2013) The internet has many benefits. One of

these benefits of Internet is it is the medium of communication. There are many

facilities on the internet helps us to communicate each other such as E-mail,

Facebook, Twitter and others. All these facilities enable people to communicate with

other people from different countries around the world so that it can explore other

cultures of different ethnicity. Also, Internet is a medium of information. Today, a lot

of people need the information from the internet. Because every second on the

internet, updates the information required by humans. For instance, Google and

Yahoo are search engine information on the internet that provide all kinds of topics

the information we need. Furthermore, Internet is a medium of entertainment.

Internet becomes successful because it provides a lot of entertainment that humans

22
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

need. For example, today many people are watching or downloading free

entertainment on the internet, and many people are playing on-line games.

A library plays a very important role in promoting the progress of knowledge.

There are many people who love reading. But they can’t afford to buy books

because the prices of books are very high. So when one becomes a member of a

library, he can borrow valuable books. A member can borrow two books at a time

and he can keep it with him for two weeks. Libraries are particularly useful for poor

children. Even those who are better off can’t afford to buy all the books they require

for their studies. For instance, invaluable books like Encyclopedias and large

dictionaries cannot be purchased.

Foreign Literature

Internet and books are two basic types of things that can be used in

Academic purposes. According to U.S. Department of Education (1994) the purpose

of computer technology in school has increased, it is the one useful thing in studying

by the use of software presentations and projects. Some have receive the literature

on technology and learning that using technology or internet has a great potential to

enhance students knowledge and teacher’s teaching if they used it approximately.

Technology aids students expression. Due to the rapid expansiveness of technology

and its wide away of uses, the incorporation of technology in learning’s has become

viable and inexpensive option. The disadvantage of technology was addicting and

some works that they need to do. We always remember that technology shoud use it

properly. The technology is not a substitute for the library but a search tool be used

23
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

in additional sources in the library . Books are also the best way to collect and

gathers information for academic purposes of every students. Reading books has

less harmful effects on our eye sight as compared to reading online on a computer.

But it is not that the internet only has bad 11 impact, but it is also does a host of

good for us. Both internet and books should go hand in hand so that the next

generation enjoys a better future. Student need to balance the things on their

studying.

According to EBSCO Industries (2019) Source of academic information is

very relevant to graduate students. Basically, academic libraries provide much

relevant research materials in both printed and electronic formats to support

graduate studies. Higher institutions such as the University for Development Studies

have therefore, invested resources in acquiring library infrastructure to facilitate

research work. This study sought to analyze graduate students use of library and

internet resources for academic activities. Primary data were collected using a

questionnaire from 126 graduate students who were selected using a simple random

sampling procedure. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and

variable profit regression framework. The results indicate that students use both

library and internet resources for their academic work. However, the use of internet

is more than that of the University's Library resources. Demographic and economic

variables were identified as determinants for the use of library and internet resources.

It was also discovered that challenges such as unfavourable working hours,

unfriendly library staff, lack of essential reference materials and inability to borrow

24
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

books affect students in library use. Besides, slow data transmission, difficulty in

accessing relevant materials and limited skills in accessing information were the

challenges associated with internet use. The results have several implications for

graduate students' academic work in the University.

According to Alberta (2013) today’s century are advances with availability of

information through two major sources, with the first one is the library and secondly

is the internet. Actually, both the internet and the library are plays a major role in

academic purposes especially in written work. Libraries are buildings that house and

catalogue books, magazines, journals, microfilm, maps, government documents and

other resources while the internet can be defined as the international network of

computers that makes things like email, the World Wide Web, blogs and online chat

as well. It was very obvious that both Internet and library have the main

responsibility in the academic written work. Each of that functions in different way by

the 3 components.

The first component will be the reliability of information that we can obtain

from the internet. In this century, the internet is the most popular way to find out

information, in spite of it some believe that a such way has more disadvantages. Not

all the information in the internet is accurate. Because, some of the information has

the space where we can edit certain things for example, Wikipedia. These website

contain faulty information whereby we can edit or add few points in it. While to library,

all the facts, information are more reliable as it in the form of books, journals and it

has significantly approved by the most of the researchers.

25
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

Begin with the second component is accessible of information that has stored

in the libraries and in the Internet. Online resources are the easiest way to find

information whenever and wherever we want in order to save our time. But when it

comes to library resources, it has the limited availability where we can’t obtain the

information whenever we want to have. Because, it doesn’t have in everyplace and

to every time when we wants to look for some information but when we have internet

availability we tend grabs more information by on time.

Thirdly, is about the fastest of the information where we can get updating

ourselves very fast with newly restored information. Through internet, we can easily

have the information very quickly and will receive up to date information. It was the

best and easiest way for college students to grab certain information or latest

information for their own paper work. Hence, it has the high validity in terms of

college work. While libraries, the books and the research are less updated and it will

take a long time to find information for certain matters. In a nutshell, both Internet

and libraries has considered that plays major role and providing information to those

need information like college students where they can use it in their written work. By

the both resources, we all can look for different sort’s information in order makes use

of it in our own work.

According to Hossain (2017) Internet is a versatile tool used by the students

that draws attention of many researchers. But little research has been found

regarding the comparative study of internet usage among university students. For

this reason, the study surveyed the internet usage among university students

26
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

coming from Business Studies, Science & Arts disciplines at University of Dhaka,

Bangladesh and the overall perceptions towards the internet usage. So we

developed a survey questionnaire and collected data on students’ demographics,

internet usage behavior and purposes of internet use. Therefore, we distributed 50

questionnaires to each discipline and a total of 150 questionnaires were returned

and all were usable. Then we analyzed the obtained data using SPSS. The results

show that the percentage of internet usage among the students coming from

Business Studies, Science and Arts disciplines is 100%, 92% and 90% respectively.

The study recommends that the students coming from Science and Arts background

should enhance the internet usage. And the students from all backgrounds should

enhance the frequency of internet access per day and invest more on internet usage.

The study also recommends that the universities should provide adequate internet

facilities and enabling environment for student.

This study provides a theoretical and empirical basis for further studies on

internet usage of university students.

Acccording to Lui (2016) University library plays a vital role to fulfill the

information needs of their users. Today they are living an information age to

access the resources is just a few clicks away. Due to rapid development of

information technology electronic resources has already influenced and changed

the way academics and researchers use traditional libraries also there is a general

idea in the society that academic community in universities all over the world has

27
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

adopted to use online resources than using print materials (physical library) to find

needed information.

According to Onymaizu (2015), everything is not freely available is not in the

web and sometime people has a false impression that everything can be found

online. Furthermore, he has explained that the authority, standards, quality and

accuracy in the online resources are not same as the printed materials. Based on

the above fact the present research was conducted to find the extent to which

undergraduates in the University of Kelaniya use the print and electronic resources

to fulfill information needs in their daily academic lives.

According to Descy (1997) The internet may seem like a large of information

that can be compared to a library. The internet does contain much Information, and

the internet is up to date. However, Library Information Studies, hereafter referred to

as LIS, is a scholarly field that grounds itself in logical organization of and ease of

access to information. Compared to LIS, The Internet fall as short to a great extent.

The most evident of these comings are cataloguing and accuracy.

According to Saylor Academy (2013) There are numerous benefits to relying

on libraries for research purposes. The information stored there is usually of the

highest caliber, and librarians take great pains to ensure that the periodicals and

books housed by them are top notch. Libraries often include material that you cannot

access on the Internet, or at least cannot access for free. Moreover, libraries have

addressed public demand for instant access to written materials. Many university

libraries provide digital copies of academic works, including dozens of databases of

28
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

online scholarly periodicals. Although these works are now online, they still hold up

to the high standards demanded by academics. You can almost never go wrong by

visiting your local or school library for information, even if that information is now

online. Of course, while providing access to an array of trustworthy sources, the

Internet is fraught with a number of perils. Although websites can be useful in

stoking your curiosity about any number of topics, and the information you can find is

often up to the minute, they should avoid citing most websites as factually reliable.

Indeed, for every credible source on a given topic, it will come across ten with less

than reputable credentials that appear under your search results. Consider an

example from a class I once taught on Nazi Germany. The student chose to write

about art during the Nazi period. As opposed to visiting the library, the student chose

to rely largely on Internet sources. Inevitably, and much to the student’s

embarrassment, he accidentally cited a pro-Nazi website on art. Websites and their

creators are exceptionally skilled at dressing up unsubstantiated opinion as empirical

fact. Had the student taken the time to visit the university library, they would not

have made this grave mistake.

Even seemingly respectable websites, such as Wikipedia, often contain

erroneous or incomplete information. If they must cite an Internet source, verify it

with their professor or instructor. It may also help to try to track down the original

resource that the website quotes or cites in order to verify the credibility of the

information. Otherwise, stick to respected online academic websites, such as those

of national museums, online archives, or universities, and leave the Internet surfing

for your free time.

29
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

According to Moxiety (2009) Conducting library and Internet research helps

you quickly find the information you need. This page provides useful suggestions

about how to conduct Boolean searches, for instance, and offers advice about how

to identify whether you should begin your research using the Open Web, the Gated

Web, or the Hidden Web. Many people are confused about what constitutes library

research versus what constitutes Internet research. Some people argue that

effective research is never conducted on the Internet, that one needs access to the

resources of a library to conduct thorough investigations. People in this camp argue

that institutional libraries pay significant sums to provide access to proprietary

databases to their customers that is, databases that offer abstracts, bibliographical

information, and, oftentimes, full texts of articles published in scholarly journals. Also,

research purists may argue that documents published on the Internet lack the

authority of research that is peer-reviewed and published by major publishers.

Something important to consider is the difference between an Internet resource and

an academic resource accessed via the Internet. The Internet hosts a variety of

resources, some of which are useful for casual, everyday references (like about.com)

and others which are more appropriate for an academic research assignment (like

my library's databases.

According to Jian (2013) The two major information powerhouse in the 21st

century would be the world wide web and the library. Both of them contain tons of

information which attract multitudes of people every day. All these people obtain

their information from these sources which are then used in their daily life such as

writing a research paper for a university student, a working man looking for routes

30
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

which have less traffic while driving home for dinner or perhaps a young teenage girl

browsing the internet for the latest fads.

However, there are disadvantages and advantages as well between the

internet and the library where one makes up for what the other does not have. Firstly,

the convenience of going to the library and the internet is already vast in comparison.

While looking for information in the internet requires only a click and an internet

connection, going to the library actually requires much more effort. One actually

needs to get out of his comfy bed and house to hail a cab or a taxi to get to the

library. If one has a car, he or she needs to drive a distance before reaching the

library. There are also situations where certain areas such as small towns have no

public library. One may need to travel to the next town where there is a library.

Hence, the internet makes up for the convenience that a library cannot offer.

Although there are many information on the internet can be used for

studies ,many lecturers and teachers do not encourage using them as their

authenticity cannot be guaranteed. This is where the library comes in because the

books that are found in the library are guaranteed to be true and credible while some

of the information found on the internet are contributed by unknown sources.

Students who are writing their research paper, they often look for information in the

library in the form of journals as the library has definitely more journals compared to

the internet. While the internet may have journals for student to look at, the sites

which contains these journals requires one to pay to see the journals.

31
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

Looking for a material which is suitable for your research or your study in a

library requires time and effort as well. Although the books in the library are

categorized together in sections, there are many books that are in that single section

which may comprise of many rows of bookshelves and these makes finding a

material which truly fits what you want is very hard and time consuming. On the

other hand, information that you want on the internet can be found easily with the

help of search engines such as Google or Yahoo as long as the correct keyword is

typed in the search box. All in all, its always up to the person whether he or she

wants to find information from the internet or library for academic work as both of

these places have all the information that one can find. Since both have their good

and bad sides, students should utilize these points to their advantage.

According to Neo (2010) The internet and the library, both considered to be a

big depository of information .Library can be defined as the collection of literary

documents or records kept for reference or borrowing. While Internet is defined as

an electronic network providing access to millions of resources worldwide. University

Libraries provide access to many periodical indexes through the Internet. Internet

access is available on all floors of the Libraries. Internet and the library both seems

to be serving the same purpose but as the time goes by and world moves to new

innovations and directions, the question arises is the latter going to replace the

former. This essay compares and contrasts the Internet and an Library, how they

share a common purpose and how they vary from each other while serving the

purpose.

32
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

Both the internet and an Library provides information on a wide array of topics

but it may be not be necessary that library in United states has the books or journals

about the History of Asian countries like china, India, Even if an American Library

does has the books and information on the Asian history it may not as exhaustive as

it would be in the libraries based in Asia itself. It is not possible to have the same set

of books and information in all the libraries. Not all the books available in the Library

of the Linden wood university would be same as available in the libraries of Delhi

University at India . Although noticeable works like the ones of Shakespeare would

be definitely on the shelves of both the libraries. But it’s not always necessary that

less known authors or journals will make to each library. While on the other hand

information available on internet is universal , the same information can be accessed

in all the computers worldwide . There is no regional version of internet just about

anyone and everyone can access the same information whether it is done with a

internet connection in India or in Americas.

On the contrary Internet is free and open to all, almost every information

available online is free to access and refer, one can take as many copies has he

wants of the content available on internet, provided he gives proper referencing and

adheres with the copy and intellectual rights, Although some websites ask for

membership to access the content and may even charge its user but that is mostly

with the commercial websites.

Foreign Studies

33
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA

According to Oac (2016) Access to information is more relevant for academic

work in all higher institutions. The role of academic libraries is to provide accessible

information resources to the entire academic fraternity Libraries make electronic

sources of information available to users because e-learning is giving new

dimension in learning and hence affecting education in many ways.

According to Israel (2016) The revolution in the world of Information and

Communication Technology (ICT) has shifted the content of libraries resources from

printed information to online information resources. Hence, the content of libraries is

not restricted to physical formats such as books, magazines or journals. Libraries

are now shifting from traditional printed resources to the use of electronic-driven

services.

According to Okazie (2016) Internet use a necessary condition for effective

utilization of library resources. However, the use of electronic resources does not

take the place of printed resources but facilitates it through access to large stock of

Library materials. Library use books and journals to distinguish if it is reliable and

most powerful search for students.

According to Supriya (2018) Library was the only source of information. Most

of people were totally dependent library for gaining knowledge. After the 20th

century there has been marked increase in internet usage. Some people consider

libraries to be unnecessary due to the availability of information on the Internet.

Others, however, believe that libraries can still play an important role in education. A

library is much more than a means of distribution of the information; it also has a

34
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

vital role in academic purpose. Library developed a wide range services to meet the

educational objectives of their parent institutions. School libraries clearly need to

support the curriculum, but they also collect books and other materials to encourage

reading and spirit of enquiring, as well as to meet the need of the teacher and

students. On the one hand, the Internet enables the users to obtain a wide range of

information regardless of their locations.

According to Alemna (2000) States that for centuries libraries have served as

repositories of information and knowledge that have provided the vital underpinnings

for socio- economic, political and cultural development in any civilization. Information

is a vital and an indispensable component of any academic environment. It makes

for effectiveness in any academic system. Both faculty and students need to use

information daily in their various academic endeavors. For decades, faculty and

students have actively used the library and its resources as their main information

source. Their relationship with cultural progress has been so interdependent that it is

needless to argue whether man’s cultural advancement merely produces libraries as

by product. We now live in the information age where access too many Internet

resources is just a few clicks away. The Internet is a technology, which has gained

more popularity in many countries across the world, is no exception. The Internet as

a medium of communication and source of information has enabled students,

researchers, business information seekers and information professionals to access

information to enhance their work and communicate effectively.

According to World Brain of H.D Well (1938) Along with many other aspects

of North America culture, Literary studies is being swept into the digital age. In

considering what this might mean, I examine in particular how the Internet, with its

many and protean conveniences for literature, is beginning to supplant the library,

that traditional bastion of the text. The prospects for literature are not necessarily

favorable. While libraries have been attempting to adapt to the Internet, the nature of

the digital medium and some of the rhetoric that has attended it invoke troubling

questions, raising the possibility that central features of literary studies may be in

danger of being disregarded or marginalized. The digitizing of literature affects how

we read and what we read, methods of study, the preservation of the archive, and

the forms taken by new writing, some of which is specifically designed to exploit the

electronic medium. In this paper I offer a sketch of the problems, possibilities, and

paradoxes that we face as literary scholars.

Developing an appropriate rhetoric to consider the digital age has, in itself,

presented a problem. The promise of the new medium has led to inflationary claims,

suggesting that the human species is about to burst from its chrysalis into an

information utopia. "The development of digitally controlled cognitive prostheses,"

says Pierre LCVY, is "transforming our intellectual capabilities as clearly as the

mutations of our genetic heritage." The totality of knowledge will soon become

available: it will constitute a knowledge space or cosmopedia, in which "the power of

disciplinary knowledge is dissolved" (xxiv, x). These claims echo arguments for the

mechanization of knowledge dating back to Vannevar Bush's both of which were to

be based on microfilm.

36
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

According to Kenemy (1962) Comparing the Library and Internet is to contrast

two opposed principles, or so it would seem: one fostering an ethic of preservation

and limited accessibility, the other an ethic of dissemination and abundance. It is

hardly surprising, then, that libraries have actively been extending their services to

the Internet to provide greater accessibility. In fact, a cursory examination of

discussions of the library over the last few decades reveals widespread assertions

that it suffers from two major problems, for which the Internet now appears a just-in-

time solution. The major libraries have become too big to navigate effectively and

the cost of print materials in the last decade has escalated far faster than increases

in budgets. Some forty years ago the expansion of libraries was held to militate

against their effective use.

The Chair of mathematics and astronomy at Dartmouth College, estimated

that Harvard Library would hold ten million volumes by 2000 (it currently has over

fourteen million). Such increases in size make it difficult to locate a single book on a

topic, let alone retrieve all the relevant information in a research area. Kemeny

argued that "our university libraries will be obsolete by A.D." Twenty years later

James Thompson, librarian of the University of Reading in England argued the same

point in The End of Libraries 1982. He claimed that libraries (as they existed then)

were already unusable and that to navigate a modem library effectively now required

several years of training.

Kemeny advocated a national research library operated by remote

technologies based on micro format tape: a user sitting at a terminal anywhere in the

37
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

United States would be able to dial up a view of a particular tape and download it to

a local tape for reading offline. Kemeny discusses a classification scheme that would

enable relevant documents to be retrieved (his examples are drawn from scientific

literature). In Toward Paperless Information Systems, published in 1978, F. W.

Lancaster outlined a model for searching and distributing information in electronic

form that would make the library obsolete. In comparing this proposal with a system

being developed for the CIA, which he helped design, Lancaster also pointed out the

importance of being able to personalize information: while a formal information

system was normative and liable to become static, a personal system would be

subjective and dynamic (34).This would make library work more effective for the

literary scholar if it could be implemented, but library development so far has been

based largely on older organizational systems that have done little beyond replacing

paper with electronic catalogs, databases, and (more recently) full texts online.

These offer only a partial and inadequate solution to the needs of the literary scholar

even full-text searching provides access only to words, not to concepts.

They still lack an effective, organized way to research the field of literary

scholarship provided in thousands of books and journal articles (and, now, Internet

sites), since the appropriate tools have yet to be developed.

According to USA Webmaster Nine (2019) The modern world is so fast that

people don’t even have the time to read a full news story in the morning newspaper.

As a working person, I carry my newspaper along with me every day when I start

from home for my office. I only have the time to read the headlines of the newspaper

38
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

during my travel hour from home to office. As I travel by a public vehicle, so I get just

enough time to read at least the headlines; but it’s not possible for those who travel

in their own vehicles, as they have to drive on their own. In such a fast moving era,

people almost have forgotten to read books. People prefer to read online journals

and fictions than to hold a bulky book in their hands. One factor that facilitates the

popularity of the Internet is its availability. The Internet facility is available almost in

every nook and corner of the world. Even if we are travelling to the distant villages in

our country, we would be getting the Internet facility. The availability of this facility on

our cell phones has made the path easier. Now people, who have an interest

in books, needn’t travel very far to reach the library, because the world of books is

present in their PC or cell phones. Despite the comfort provided by this

revolutionizing facility of the Internet, there are some people who still love to be

engaged in reading bulky books. It is so because; people sometime find it difficult to

search on the Internet. So they prefer to read books or journals available in the

library, to be on the safer side. Moreover, it’s altogether a different experience to

read a book sitting in the library.

Reading a book involves a lot of attention, so a library is the ideal place for

reading books and exploring the world. It’s a modern day trend that in most of the

educational institutes, books are replaced to a large extent by online materials

available on the Internet .Whenever children get some school projects, they first run

to their computers to get the information related to it.

39
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

There is genuinely no harm in doing so, but the authenticity of the details

provided on the Internet should be checked first, because many sites provide half or

even wrong information. The Internet helps us become well informed citizens,

knowledgeable about current events and updated with the latest controversies and

important trends. Though the Internet helps us become aware of what’s going on in

the world at a fast pace, the literary world is still better at helping us become aware

at the pace most suited to each of us. Reading books has less harmful effects on our

eye sight as compared to reading online at a computer. The computer constantly

releases harmful rays that badly impact the eyesight, especially of the children. But it

is not that the Internet only has a bad impact, but that it also does a host of goods for

us.

The Internet is a social platform where we can exchange our views, ideas or

thoughts to the world, as well as know about the world in a better manner. Both

Internet and books should go hand in hand so that the next generation enjoys a

better future.

According to Robin (2017) Said that reading books is the best way to learn

new vocabulary or what we called dictionary which is books. He used to study the

vocabulary as one of the example to collect data. This way your brain will absorb the

meanings of the words much better and also technology as said of the author that

for example gadget you can download thee video or apps to be more accustomed to

the sound and construction from a foreign language. So, both technology and books

are useful which can help students to gain knowledge and to express their skills in

40
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

their academic purpose. The author uses the language (techniques) learning

techniques as an example to have information about the comparison between

technology and books among students. It is clearly stated that both technology and

books is important for the students just like on how to pronounce the English word

which you can use technology to know the pronunciation and books like dictionary

for the meaning of the words.

The Review of Local Studies/Literature and Foreign Studies/Literature which

was gathered and collected from different sources to provide the guidance and

information pertaining and have relevance to the study.

This study is based in the broader field of information behavior. More

specifically in the context of information seeking behavior as define “ the purposive

seeking for information as a consequence of a need to satisfy some goal. In the

course of seeking, the individual may interact with manual information systems (such

as a newspaper or a library), or with computer-based systems (such as the World

Wide Web)”. The Comparative study on the use of the internet and the library as a

source of information focuses on how students interact with both manual and

computer based systems. It also investigated which system they prefer using and

the motivation to select one system to the other.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The quantitative method of research was used in this study. According to

Burn (2015) defined quantitative research as a formal, objective, systematic process

to describe and test relationships and examine cause and effect interactions among

variables. Since the presents study concerned the present status. it will give us an

opportunity to become a good student or researcher, a way to learn and catch up

more idea from both internet and books. The quantitative method of research was

appropriate method to use. The researcher chose quantitative research because this

method of research is a data that can be counted or expressed in a numerical way of

collecting information. It also tends itself to a statistical analysis and mathematical

computation and therefore is typically illustrated in chart or graphs.

The type of quantitative method that the researcher used is descriptive

research because it can utilize elements of both, often within the same study. The

term descriptive research refers to the type of research question, design, and data

analysis that will be applied to a given topic. Descriptive statistics tell what is, while

inferential statistics try to determine cause and effect. It can involve collections of

quantitative information that can be tabulated along a continuum in numerical form,

such as scores on a test or the number of times a person chooses to use a-certain

feature of a multimedia program, or it can describe categories of information such as

42
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

gender or patterns of interaction when using technology in a group situation., depicts,

and describes the data collection.

According to Mouton (2000) a descriptive survey design was used .A survey

is used to collect original data for describing a population too large to observe

directly. A survey obtains information from a sample of people by means of self-

report, that is, the people respond to a series of questions posed by the investigator.

In this study the information was collected through self-administered questionnaires

distributed personally to the subjects by the researcher. A descriptive survey was

selected because it provides an accurate portrayal or account of the characteristics,

for example behavior, opinions, abilities, beliefs, and knowledge of a particular

individual, situation or group.

According to Bhat (2009), systematic investigation of phenomena by

gathering quantifiable data and performing statistical, mathematical or computational

techniques. Quantitative research gathers information from existing and potential

customers using sampling methods and sending out online surveys, online

polls, questionnaires, the results of which can be depicted in the form of numerical.

After careful understanding of these numbers to predict the future of a product or

service and make changes accordingly.

A survey and interview obtains information from a sample of people by means

of self-report, that is, the people respond to a series of questions posed by the

investigator. In this study the information was collected through self-administered

questionnaires distributed personally to the subjects by the researcher. A descriptive

survey was selected because it provides an accurate portrayal or account of the

characteristics, for example behavior, opinions, abilities, beliefs, and knowledge of a

particular individual, situation or group.

Moreover, this design was chosen to meet the objectives of the study, namely

to determine the knowledge and views of the Grade 12 students of St. Gregory

College of Valenzuela

Research Locale

The main focus of the study is on the school of St. Gregory College of

Valenzuela. The campus have library that serve the needs of the academic

community. Also, Faculty of Education which is located at the ground floor of the

building. Library plays a very important role in the delivery of information and

services to the St. Gregory College of Valenzuela. It has electronic database and

hence provides a wide range of reading materials which include newspapers,

journals, magazines, e-resources and books.

44

time of the researcher. This study is for Grade 12 Senior High School only, Junior

High School students are not involved in the research. They were the chosen

respondents who can answer the survey questionnaire and ask some information to

evaluate and elaborate the use of both internet and library for their academic

purposes. The researcher wanted to know their study habits, behavior, and attitudes

of using internet and library for their academic purposes.

Instrumentation

The researcher design an interview schedule is one of the data collection

instrument. The instrument used was a researcher completed questionnaire to

gather the needed data for this study about the internet and library. Grade 12

HUMSS, ABM 1, ABM 2, GAS 1, GAS 1, STEM are going to answer the

questionnaire, the drop of the questionnaire was drawn out base on the researchers

reading, previews studies, literature, Publishes and un publishes thesis that was

relevant to the study. In preparation of the instrument, the requirement in the

designing of good data collection instrument we’re considered. The next instrument

that the researcher uses in research design was survey to answer those questions

that are relevant to the problem.

For instances, statements describing the situation or issues pertaining was

tone down to accommodate the knowledge preparedness of the respondents. Open-

minded options were provided to accommodate to free formatted views related to

the topics or issues. The closed ended questions on the other hand, required

45
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA

specific answers from respondents. Some of the questions were ranked, while in

others options were made available to respondents. In this way,

The instrument is authorized to obtain the valid responses of the students, by the

use of questionnaire and interview, the percentage of this study will be provided by

this formula In the end, to know the percentage of this study about internet and

library, the researcher name to used the statistical treatment to know the total

percentage from the target population.

Sampling and Sampling Techniques

Probability sample is used in this study. This method of sampling techniques,

utilizes some form of random selection. In order to have a random selection method,

they must set up some process or procedure that assures that the different units in

the population have equal probabilities of being chosen. Humans have long

practiced various forms of random selection, such as picking a name out of a hat, or

choosing the short straw. These days, people tends to use computers as the

mechanism for generating random numbers as the basis for random selection.

It is a sampling technique in which sample from a larger population are

chosen using a method based on the theory of probability. For a participant to be

considered as a probability sample, he/she must be selected using a random

selection. The most important requirement of probability sampling is that everyone in

your population has a known and an equal chance of getting selected. It sampling

uses statistical theory to select randomly, a small group of people (sample) from an

46
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

existing large population and then predict that all their responses together will match

the overall population.

The researcher use probability sample gives the best chance to create

a sample that is truly representative of the population. Researchers want to draw

conclusions that are valid for the whole study population, and should take care to

draw a sample in such a way that it is representative of that population. The

advantage of using probability sampling is the accuracy of the statistical methods

after the experiment. It can also be used to estimate the population parameters

since it is representative of the entire population. It is also a reliable method to

eliminate sampling bias.

According to Alreck (2001), state that, it is seldom necessary to sample more

than 10% of the population to obtain adequate confidence in your generalization. In

this study, the accessible population comprised all the grade 12 student at St.

Gregory College of Valenzuela strands of ABM, HUMMS, GAS, STEM. The

researcher chose grade 12 student as the respondents of the research study by

selecting them based on the position as a class officer in each room they belong.

which is all about the comparison between internet and library for their academic

purposes. The sample of population of this study is stood at students every strand. A

simple random procedure was use for selecting the participants in this study. It

obtained by choosing elementary units in search a way that each unit in the

population has an equal chance of being selected. A simple random sample is free

from sampling bias. However, using a random number table to choose the

47
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA
162 P. Faustino St., Punturin, Valenzuela City

elementary units can be cumbersome. If the sample is to be collected by a person

untrained in statistics, then instructions may be misinterpreted and selections may

be made improperly.

The technique was employ to ensure fairly equal representation of the

variables for the study. Participants were therefore sampled based on their

availability and willingness to complete the questionnaire.

The researcher use simple random techniques formula to know the

percentage of the Grade 12 students who use internet and library as they source of

information.

internet and library as a source of information. All questionnaire

will distributed by the subject to subject by the researcher personally, the question

we’re formulated In simple language for clarity and is for understanding. Clear

instruction will given to the respondents. All subject completed the questionnaire in

the presence of the researcher. This was done to prevent subject from giving

questionnaire to other people to complete in their behalf.

The data required for the study to obtained mainly from primary, secondary

sources. The secondary sources include textbook, journals, magazines and the

internet. The primary source was the questionnaire. The researcher distributed

questionnaire to respondents personally. The questionnaire, interview and

observation question was designed to gather background information of the

respondents, the use of internet and library, the most reliable source of information

between internet and library by Grade 12 Students at St Gregory College of

Valenzuela.

Questionnaire included a variety of questions on the knowledge of Grade 12

students about comparing the internet and library as a source of information.

Question we’re based on information gathered during the literature review ensure

that they we’re representative of what Grade 12 students should know about the

difference between internet and library, the content validity will achieve.

strand got 4% (6) in this study.

It’s quite observed in Table 1 and 1.2 that over 600 students in St. Gregory

College of Valenzuela knowing that internet was the most reliable in terms of study.

According to Strauss (2003), Internet is a very useful way for others. People can

easily access to the internet to find whatever they wanted. Consider this two ways of

finding information. There is nothing wrong of using them.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the study pointing out the important

findings with its conclusions and recommendations.

Summary

This study aims to create a comparative study on the preferred source of

information of Grade 12 students in St. Gregory College of Valenzuela. Whether

library and internet.

Specially, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the number of Grade 12 students use:

a. Library and other books

b. Internet

2. What are the possible reasons of the students use this source of information?

This study applied Quantitative Research Design, which includes descriptive

methods in which two instruments are used and this are Survey and Interview to

gather data.

The following synthesizes the results and findings of the study:

1. What are the number of Grade 12 students use:

a. Library and other books

55
ST. GREGORY COLLEGE OF VALENZUELA

b. Internet

Neo (2010), the internet and the library, both considered to be a big

depository of information .Library can be defined as the collection of literary

documents or records kept for reference or borrowing. While Internet is defined as

an electronic network providing access to millions of resources worldwide. University

Libraries provide access to many periodical indexes through the Internet. Internet

access is available on all floors of the Libraries. Some students uses internet so then,

they can easy access some information with it but in Libraries, Some students uses

it to be more specific and find it more reliable fo them.

2. What are the possible reasons of the students use this source of information?

Oac (2016). access to information is more relevant for academic work in all

higher institutions. The role of academic libraries is to provide accessible information

resources to the entire academic fraternity Libraries make electronic sources of

information available to users because e-learning is giving new dimension in

learning and hence affecting education in many ways.

According to Almahit (2015) Study is most essential part of a student’s life. So

internet helps students to find out the solution of their problems. So internet gives so

many benefits to students. They can use it for their career growth and get knowledge.

There are so many sites which are providing free lectures also. The students who

are not able to get study material in the specific location like rural areas they can

easily get It through online marketing systems.

Conclusion

This study conducted to compare Grade 12 Students Internet use and Library

use. It was based on the assumption that Grade 12 Students used the Internet more

than the library. The findings of the study indicate that students do not bypass the

library in satisfying their information need. They use both the library and the internet,

although the Internet is used more than the library and it is also the most preferred

source of information. Students also make use of sources such as the media,

lectures notes and interaction with their lecturer, Teachers, Parents and Friends

most library services are well patronized, while most Internet services are much

underutilized.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of the study and the conclusion formulated the

following recommendations are the following:

1. Use one formula to gathered data, therefore it enhance the researcher to

understand and to gather data in an easiest way.

To Future Researchers:

2. Add more respondents on your study to become more realistic and credible.

3. Focus on your topic specially when choosing an accurate one in terms of

adequate information and reliability of the study.
