CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Developing Research Culture

Marchant (2009) concluded that production of new knowledge through Research is

a fundamental mission of universities. However, with the teaching-focused tradition, most

universities are confronted with a range of obstacles which constrain the development of

research culture among the faculty and staff. Among these obstacles were limited resources

and research budget, lack of research skills and expertise, and high and exhausting teaching

loads. Nevertheless, it is imperative that university leaders play a key role in cultivating

research culture by way of appreciating and rewarding research endeavors.

A study about building research culture in Philippine Higher Education found out

that there were no significant differences between two sexes in terms of research

productivity. Similarly, productivity of singles and those who are married did not differ

significantly. Research productivity was not also correlated with age. However, higher

academic ranks tended to be more productive in terms of publications, paper presentations,

patents filed and technology commercialized. Males presented papers significantly more

than female faculty members (Teehankee, 2011).

A study about developing research culture in Philippine Higher Education

Institutions based on the perspectives of the faculty, found out that the following factors

are present only to a moderate extent: (a) impact of research, (b) administrative practices,

(c) inter-institutional collaboration, (d) institutional research strategy, (e) financial reward

system, (f) infrastructure, (g) the presence of ethical policies, and (h) the availability of

research funding. (Salazar-Clemeña & Almonte-Acosta, 2007)

In a study of the research capability, oral healthcare educators have been found out

to be most confident with the technical aspect including research paper format, grammar

and sentence construction, research organization, and communication skills. On the other

hand, they are least confident in writing the methodology of the paper of which the

researchers are mostly guided by the assigned reader/referee and statistician (Bay &

Clerigo, 2013). In the case of maritime faculty, it was found out that maritime faculty have

been found out to be moderately competent in technical aspect, particularly in terms of

grammar, sentence construction and communication skills. Like the oral healthcare

educators, maritime faculty need improvement in the construction of questionnaires,

developing research designs and in determining statistical tools and treatment (Formeloza

& Pateña, 2013).
