Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Filipino Folk Dance is a popular dance in the Philippines wherein a particular

group of people considered this as part of their cultural tradition and some treat it as ritual

(religious dance). This also shows different characteristics of every Filipino, others used

folk dance to express how they court the one they love. Filipino Folk Dance was

developed to reflect the life of people living in some places at Quezon Province.

Nowadays, younger generations (millennial) of Filipinos, particularly the living people in

Quezon are drawn in an environment with such stimulation of the social media,

disregarding the importance of Filipino culture and arts when it comes to folk dances. In

order to help relive our culture, every educational institution from undergraduate and

even secondary level included a Physical Education/P.E. subject in the curriculum which

tackles different Filipino Folk Dance and even allowed the students to experience how it

is done. And as many people know instructors, teachers, professors and students still use

textbooks, manuals and other hardcopies to learn more and gain additional knowledge

about folk dances. Whereas mobile phones being handy and efficient can give more

information to this generation in an instant, also mobile phones make the life of every

individual easier and technologically dependent which made this research to be more

informative and helpful especially to those students who suffer from financial incapacity

and cannot afford to buy handbooks or have them photocopied.

In this study, the researchers developed an android-based application that helped

in minimizing the hardcopies of manuals and to help every layman in Quezon to be well-
2

informed and knowledgeable with Folk Dance that are both common and unfamiliar to

them and to relive the culture that Filipinos had.

Background of the Study

The researchers conducted this study in order to retain the essence and

importance of Filipino folk dance in different places. Folk dance keeps the culture and

traditions of different groups and tribes alive and remembered and it also embodies the

beauty of art in dancing one’s culture. The researchers also sought to preserve the

Filipino folk dances in Quezon province to pass it on to the next generations and to

prevent our culture from being forgotten. Every individual nowadays are uses mobile

phones most of the time to help each person to acquire more knowledge and be

informed with regard to Filipino folk dances within Quezon province.

The researchers conducted a survey that recognized the effectiveness of how this

research can assist professors, and instructors in their teaching to facilitate the knowledge

of the students and assist in teaching, effortlessly accessing by way of students, teachers,

instructors, professors, by means of this research the time spent to teach the students can

be reduced besides it is more practical.

Also, the researchers conducted this study to prove that mobile application has

greater and own importance in today’s generation rather than being used as an

entertainment it can help every user to be well-educated. It has been observed that almost

everyone was using their own mobile phones in their daily life therefore the researchers
3

thought of having a mobile application that would be useful and everyone would easily

cope up in using to be able to learn about folk dances.

Objectives of the Study

This study aimed to develop a mobile application about Mobile Application for

Selected Folk Dances in Quezon Province Specifically it sought to achieve the following

objectives:

1. To design and develop a convenient application to those students and teachers that had

a Physical Education subject and interested to learn Filipino folk dances in Quezon.

 To preserve the art and importance of Folk Dance.

 To learn the folk dances in Quezon Province through mobile phones.

 To distribute the information and history of folk dance by using mobile phones.

2. To determine the software development tools and hardware requirements.

3. To evaluate the capability of the system based on ISO 25010 for IT expert evaluation

and device checklist type questionnaire for users.

Significance of the Study

This system helped the teachers/professors to easily know and discuss the history

and steps of the Folk Dances. The implementation of this system reduced the expenses of
4

the students in photocopies and to those who are interested in learning folk dances in

Quezon Province. The system assured that all of the information are accurate.

The results of the study great benefits for the following:

To the students, the results provided the students more convenient application. It

prevented the students from spending large amounts of money to have photocopies of

their lecture in class. At the end of this study the students are more interested in learning

the art of folk dances.

To the teachers/instructors, the teachers minimized their time at the printing

shops to get the manual copies for their students and also they minimized their time in

demonstrating the steps to their students because this study already provided some

tutorial videos.

To the layman in Quezon Province, the people who live in Quezon Province are

informed about the unfamiliar folk dances in the province. Also, this study relived they

knew the different folk dances in the province.

To the researchers, since creating an android-based system enhances their

programming skills.

To future researchers, the results gave the future research an idea to improvise

this study. They can improve this by adding more features and more folk dances from

other provinces.
5

Scope and Limitations

This study was conducted for the students, teachers, and mobile phone users in

Quezon Province and also other provinces. Quezon Province has (15) fifteen folk dances,

the Abaruray, Estudiantina, Huricuti, Jota Gumaquena, Lanceros de Tayabas,

Magkasuyo, Pabo, Panchita, Papuri, Polka, Putritos, Malaguena, Polkabal, Buling-buling

and Jotabal, but the available dances with videos and tutorials are just eight (8) and these

are the Jota Gumaquena, Buling-buling, Jotabal, Polkabal, Putritos, Abaruray,

Estudiantina and Malaguena. The selection of respondents are only limited since there are

so many students and teachers at the Southern Luzon State University that do not usually

have Physical Education subjects which focus on teaching Filipino folk dances.

This research was designed to have a thorough knowledge on why do the

students, teachers and mobile phone users have to use applications and know more

about Filipino folk dances in Quezon Province.

Definition of Terms

The key terms in the study are given the following operational and conceptual

definitions:

Compatibility Degree to which a product, system or component can exchange

information with other products, systems or components, and/or perform its required

functions, while sharing the same hardware or software environment. This characteristic

is composed of the following sub characteristics:

Co-existence. Degree to which a product can perform its required functions

6

efficiently while sharing a common environment and resources with other products,

without detrimental impact on any other product.

Interoperability. Degree to which two or more systems, products or components

can exchange information and use the information that has been exchanged.

Filipino Folk Dance Are set of dances that were engraved in our folklore. All

throughout the Philippines, many folk dances were discovered, presented and preserved

depending on the cultural background of each group. (Gilda R. Buenafe 2017).

Mobile Application, most commonly referred to as an app, is a type of

application software designed to run on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet

computer. Mobile applications frequently serve to provide users with similar services to

those accessed on PCs. Apps are generally small, individual software units with limited

function. This use of app software was originally popularized by Apple Inc. and its App

Store, which offers thousands of applications for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

The literature review presented and covered the Filipino folk dance, importance of

mobile application in learning and adapting to the new generation.

Filipino folk dances are colorful, beautiful, and vibrant. Their movement, dress,

and music reveals the unique Filipino culture and brings up the importance of uplifting

the Filipino identity. Most dances in the country were inspired by everyday activities,

such as working in the fields and harvesting rice, as well as celebrations such as feasts,

weddings, and birthdays. Philippine folk dances consist of five major suites, namely

Cordillera, Maria Clara, Muslim, Lumad, and Rural. Each of the suites involves a

repertoire of folk dances that hail from different locations in the country. Cordillera suite

comprises dances from the mountainous region of the north known to be the home of

ferocious headhunters who existed even before the arrival of the Spanish. Music plays a

vital role in their lifestyle, and events such as war, courtship, marriage, or good harvest

involve dance. Ragsaksakan (merriment), banga (pots), and tarektek (woodpecker) are

examples of dances from the Cordillera suite.

(Technopedia) Although an Android app can be made available by developers

through their websites, most Android apps were uploaded and published on the Android

Market, an online store dedicated for these applications. The Android Market features

both free and priced apps. Android apps are written in the Java programming language

and use Java core libraries. They are first compiled to Dalvik executable to run on the
8

Dalvik virtual machine, which is a virtual machine specially designed for mobile

devices.

Developers may download the Android software development kit (SDK) from the

Android website. The SDK includes tools, sample code and relevant documents for

creating Android apps. Novice developers who simply want to play around with Android

programming can make use of the App Inventor. Using this online application, a user can

construct an Android app as if they are combining the puzzle pieces.

According to Matt Mullarkey - Toner on his article “One step on a time: Software

to Manage your Dance Studio” which was published on June 2017”, the software is

excellent for both appointment and class based businesses. MB has excellent features for

many different industries. It is by far the most feature complete system available. There

are constant improvements and MB cares about its base. Changes are thoroughly tested

before being released. A rich partner network allows you to expand functionality in many

ways. Mobile apps for the provider, owner, and client are available. Mobile solutions are

easy to use. Reporting is easy after some training. Mobile apps are convenient, efficient

way to streamline all of your dance company processes. Whether your line of work is in

performing arts, classical ballets and ballet technique, hip-hop dance, folk dances, dance

festivals, Afro-Caribbean dance or another form of choreographic expertise, you will

have more time to focus on dancing and doing what you love when your documents are

organized and simplified”

A case study from Research in Dance Education, vol. 19, 2018-Issue 2 found out

that the importance of mobile apps which states that, “While it explores recent studies on

technology integration in dance education, it also looks at the effectiveness of using

9

technology, especially how mobile devices work and the role they play in teaching and

learning dance. Results indicate that despite initial difficulties, both high school students

and their teachers benefit from technology integration in dance classes. Some

technological approaches (web podcast and blogs) work better than others (website and

virtual learning platforms, e.g. Moodle and Blackboard). Concerns about confidentiality

and capability of using technology in dance teaching and learning are discussed and

strategies to problem-solving are also shared.”

Another study shows the importance of mobile application in learning, it states that,

“with the educational apps, the students can get access to any information from

anywhere. Therefore, the mobile apps are the most interactive and constructive way to

attract the students towards studies and enhance their productivity. These mobile

applications have brought about some crucial changes in the education industry, as most

of the institutions, tutorial centers, and individual educators are getting in touch with

the app developer Denmark, to get the mobile apps for imparting knowledge, and this is

because the educational apps offer a lot of benefits. So without wasting time, let us

discuss a few of the benefits of the educational apps.” (27 Oct 2017 Importance and

Benefits of Educational Mobile Apps)

Android Studio

Android Studio is the integrated development environment for Google’s Android

platform. Versions of Android Studio are compatible with some Apple, Windows and

Linux operating systems. With support for Google Cloud Platform and Google app
10

integration, Android Studio offers developers a well-stocked toolkit for creating Android

apps or other projects, and has been an integral part of Android development since 2013.

Blender

Blender is a 3D computer graphics software program for developing animated

movies, visual effects, 3D games, and software. Blender is an open source program, free

to anyone for use. It offers many features including 3D modeling, texturing, rigging,

skinning, fluid, smoke simulation, animation, rendering, and video editing.

Blender was originally developed by NeoGeo and Not a Number Technologies

in 1998 and was licensed as shareware. It is available for Microsoft Windows, macOS,

and Linux operating systems. It functions best on a system with a 2 GHz dual or quad-

core processor, 8 or more GB RAM, a FireGL or Quadro video card, and a monitor that

supports 1920x1200 resolution.

Filmora

Filmora is a simple yet powerful video editor available for Mac and PC at the

enthusiast and prosumer markets. It’s perfect for a range of basic users, from creating

tutorial videos to editing action camera footage to making viral videos for social media

sites. You probably wouldn’t want to use it to edit a feature-length movie, but for short

video work it’s surprisingly effective for its price point, with a good blend of features that

are easy to use.

The program has been around for a quite a while, reaching version 8.3.0 in the

latest release (you can learn more from the official site here). It was originally released as
11

Wondershare Video Editor, but after version 5.1.1 it was rebranded as Filmora. This

extensive history has allowed Wondershare to iron out almost all bugs and user

experience issues, although some of the newer features need a bit more work before

they’re fully reliable.

ISO 25010 is a quality in use model composed of five characteristics (some of

which are further subdivided into sub characteristics) which relates to the outcome of

interaction when a product is used in a particular context of use. This system model is

applicable to the complete human-computer system, including both computer systems in

use and software products in use. A product quality model is composed of eight

characteristics. Which are further subdivided into sub characteristics that relates to static

properties of software and dynamic properties of the computer system. The model is

applicable to both computer systems and software products. (ISO/IEC 25010:2011) Quality

model is the cornerstone of a product quality evaluation system. The quality model

determines which quality characteristics will be taken into account when evaluating the

properties of a software product. The quality of a system is the degree to which the

system satisfies the stated and implied needs of its various stakeholders, and thus

provides value. Those stakeholders' needs. (Functionality, performance, security,

maintainability, etc.) Are precisely what is represented in the quality model, .which

categorizes the product quality into characteristics and sub-characteristics. (ISO 25000

STANDARDS, 2013)

Compatibility is a degree to which a product, system or component can exchange

information with other products, systems or components, and/or perform its required
12

functions, .while sharing the same hardware or software environment. (Gernotstarke,

2015)

Efficiency is a resources.expended.in relation to the accuracy and completeness

with which users achieve goals. (Codacy, 2017)

Functional Suitability is a degree to which a product or system provides

functions that meet stated and implied needs when used under specified conditions. (M.

Mardjan, 2016)

Graphical User Interface (GUI) is an interface through which a user interacts

with electronic devices such as computers, hand-held devices and other appliances. This

interface uses icons, menus and other visual indicator (graphics) representations to

display information and related user controls, unlike text-based interfaces, where data and

commands are in text. GUI representations are manipulated by a pointing device such as

a mouse, trackball, stylus, or a finger on a touch screen.

The need for GUI became apparent because the first human/computer text

interface was through keyboard text creation which is called prompt (or DOS prompt).

Commands were inputted using keyboard at the DOS prompt to initiate responses from a

computer. The use of these commands and the need for exact spelling created a

cumbersome and inefficient interface.

Maintainability is a special aspect of software quality is that it acts as an enabler

for other quality characteristics. When a system has high maintainability, it is easier to

make improvements in the other quality areas, such as fixing a security bug. More
13

generally speaking, optimizing a software system requires modifications to its source

code, .whether for performance, functional suitability, security, or any other of the seven

no maintainability characteristics defined by ISO 25010 (J. Visser).

Reliability is a measure of the stability or consistency of test scores. You can also

think of it as the ability for a test or research findings to be repeatable. (Stephanie, 2016)

Performance efficiency represents the performance relative to the amount of

resources used under stated conditions. (ISO 25000 Standards)

Security is a degree to which a product or system protects information and data

so that persons or other products or systems have the degree of data access appropriate.to

their types and levels of authorization. (ISO/IEC 25010:2011(en))

Transferability is established by providing readers with evidence that the

research study’s findings could be applicable to other contexts, situations, times, .and

populations. It is important to note that you as the researchers cannot prove that the

research study’s findings will be applicable. Instead, you job.as the researcher.is to

provide the evidence that.it could be applicable (Lincoln & Guba, 1985).

Usability is the measure of a product's potential to accomplish the goals of the

user. In information technology, the term is often used in relation software applications

and Web sites, but it can be used in relation to any product that is employed to

accomplish a task (for example, a toaster, a car dashboard, or an alarm clock). Some

factors used in determining product usability are ease-of-use, visual consistency, .and a

clear, defined process for evolution. (M. Rouse)

14

Java

Java is a programming language that produces software for multiple platforms.

When a programmer writes a Java application, the compiled code (known as byte code)

runs on most operating systems (OS), including Windows, Linux and Mac OS. Java

derives much of its syntax from the C and C++ programming languages. Java was

developed in the mid-1990s by James A. Gosling, a former computer scientist with Sun

Microsystems.

Software Tools

Android™ is an open source software stack for a wide range of mobile devices

and corresponding open source project led by Google (Google, 2015) and has dominated

the smartphone OS market with 78.0% market share (International Data Corporation,

2015). It’s open-source nature and its large cut of the market share translates to more

potential users for app developers. On the other hand, iOS is a mobile operating system

developed for the sole use of iPhone and iPad devices by Apple Inc. Applications or

Apps developed for the Android Platform must be sent to Google through Google Play,

the official app store of the Android Platform owned and developed by Google. Not too

long ago, phones are dumb, its only purpose is to receive and send texts messages, and to

initiate and receive phone calls. With the introduction of smartphones, these devices are

now able to increase user experience and productivity through apps. Phones are now

portable computers. This idea gained tremendous attention from developers, companies,

and even educators.

“Mobile learning (often “m-learning”) is in itself not new, but new devices with

enhanced capabilities have dramatically increased the interest level, including among

language educators.” (Godwin-Jones, 2011)

and interpret the study. In here the researchers enumerated the methods that helped them

to continue the study, this includes research locale, research design, and respondent of the

study, sources of data and data gathering procedure or data collection that accomplished

the objectives.

Research Locale

The project was conducted in Southern Luzon State University Institute of Human

Kinetics (IHK) Department in province of Quezon where the "Mobile Application for

Selected Folk Dances in Quezon Province” was applied. The researchers chose the 1st

year students of Southern Luzon State University who were currently enrolled in P.E.-II

class and the instructors handling such class to be the research locale because the

researchers would like to create a mobile application where the dance of Quezon

Province is the main topic.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study was Ten (10) IT experts and Forty (40) possible

users from the Institute of Human Kinetics (IHK) particularly the instructors and students

of Southern Luzon State University. The researchers utilized the Random Sampling

Technique in determining the total number of population included in this study. The

respondents evaluated the Mobile Application for Selected Folk Dances in Quezon
18

Province in terms of Graphical User Interface, Usability, Efficiency, Reliability,

Functional Suitability, Performance Efficiency, Security, Maintainability, and Portability.

Research Design

The method used by the researchers was the developmental method. By giving the

users information, the researchers designed a systematic study of designing.

Developmental method was the systematic study of designing, developing, and

evaluating instructional programs, processes, and products which should meet the criteria

of internal consistency and effectiveness. Developmental research was particularly

important in the field of instructional technology. There are three (3) common types of

developmental research: first, it involves situation which the product-development

process was analyzed and described, and the final product was evaluated. Second type of

developmental research focused more on the impact of the product with the user or the

organization. The third type of study was oriented towards the general analysis of design

development or evaluation processes as a whole or as components. (Richey, Rita C.)

Data Gathering Procedure

The necessary data’s and facts were collected from the Institute of Human

Kinetics (IHK). The researchers asked for permission and went to the office to interview

one of the professors to get the data needed. The researchers also used books and internet

as source of proper information with regard to the process of the application. The
19

researchers sent out survey questionnaires to the respondents that determined the

acceptability of the study.
