DEFINITIONS

Police

Police is the function of that branch of the administrative machinery of government which is charged
with the preservation of public order and tranquillity, the promotion of the public health, safety, and
morals, and the prevention, detection, and punishment of crimes. (http://thelawdictionary.org/police/)

Policing

Those organized forms of order maintenance, peacekeeping, rule or law enforcement, crime
investigation, and prevention and other forms of investigation and associated information-brokering—
which may involve a conscious exercise of coercive power—undertaken by individuals or organizations,
where such activities are viewed by them and/or other as a central or key defining part of their purpose.
