The stratosphere the layer of our atmosphere just above the one we breathe
includes a thin layer of ozone. This layer is thicker over the poles than the equator. Ozone
protects us from the sun by interacting with the light. When ultraviolet lights hit oxygen
molecules in stratosphere, it splits the molecules in to two atoms of oxygen. When this
encounters another oxygen molecule, the too combine to make ozone. Ultra violet light
also breaks ozone back down in to an oxygen molecule and an oxygen atom.

QUESTION

All of us at some time or the other, have paused to look at ant’s laboriously carrying
burden several times their size. In fact, some carry objects up to 50 times their weight!
What is more, they move these loads over long distances and even climb trees while
carrying more than their fair share!

Imaging this: slim women weighting 50kg lifting a small car, carrying it on her back for
15km and then climbing a hill, still carrying the car! That is the kind of load ants carry.
Small wonder that we associate ‘work’ with ants.

The scientist of study of these fascinating creatures are called myrmecology. Ants are
social insects. They inhabit colonies called nests and carry out complicated tasks. They
clean, groom and feed each other. Just like people-especially those who are in power-
favor relatives and friends, ants are known to be nepotistic too.

As social creatures, ants need to identify their own nest mates from non-nest mates.
They do this by recognizing the odor that emanates from their nest mates, which is
different from that given off by non-nest mates.

Ants have hierarchies comprising forager ants, workers and queens-each has a well-
defined role to play in the colony. They strictly adhere to their social structure

MULTIPLE CHOICES

The passage is followed by questions on its content. After reading a

passage, choose the best answer to each question. Answer all questions following a
passage on the basis of what is stated or implied in that passage.

PASSAGE 1

Since the Hawaiian islands have never been connected to other land
masses, the great variety of plants in Hawaii must be a result of the long distance
dispersal of seeds, a process that requires both a method of transport and equivalence
between the ecology of the source area and that of the recipient area.

There is some about the method of transport involved; some biologists

argue that ocean and air currents are responsible for the transport of plant seeds to
Hawaii. Yet the results of flotation experiments and the low temperatures of air currents
cast doubt on these hypothesis. More probable is bird transport, either extremely, by
accidental attachment of the seeds to feathers or internally, by the swallowing of fruit and
subsequent excretion of the seeds. While it is likely that fewer varieties of plant seeds
have reached Hawaii externally than internally, more varieties are known to be adapted to
external than to internal transport.

13
1. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with

a. discussing different approaches biologists have taken to testing theories about

the distribution of plants in Hawaii.

b. discussing different theories about the transport of plant seeds to Hawaii.

c. discussing the extent to which air currents are responsible for the dispersal of
plant seeds to Hawaii.

d. resolving a dispute about the adaptability of plants seeds to bird transport.

2. The author mentions the results of flotation experiments on plant seeds most
probably in order to

a. Support the claim that the distribution of plants in Hawaii is the result of the
long distance dispersal of seeds

b. Lend credibility to the thesis that air currents provide a method of transport for
plant seeds to Hawaii.

c. Suggest that the long distance dispersal of seeds is a process that requires long
periods of time.

d. Challenge the claim that ocean currents are responsible for the transport of plant
seeds to Hawaii.

14
3. It can be inferred from information in the passage that the existence in alpine
regions of Hawaii of a plant species that also grows in the south western united
states would justify which of the following conclusion?

a. The ecology of the south western United States is similar in important

respects to the ecology of alpine regions of Hawaii.
b. There are ocean currents that flow from the south western United States to
Hawaii.
c. The plant species discovered in Hawaii must have traveled from the south
western United States only very recently.
d. The plant species discovered in Hawaii reached there by attaching to the
feathers of birds migrating from the south western United States.

4. The passage supplies information for answering which of the following question?

a. Why does successful long distance dispersal of plant seeds require

equivalence between the ecology of the source area and that of the
recipient area?
b. Why are more varieties of plant seeds adapted to external rather than to
internal bird transport?
c. What varieties of plant seeds are birds that fly long distance most likely to
swallow?
d. What is the reason for accepting the long distance dispersal of plant seeds
as an explanation for the origin of Hawaiian flora?

Nancy: Hi John.
John: Hi Nancy.
Nancy: How are you doing?
John: I am doing OK. It would be better if I have a new job right now.
Nancy: You are looking for a new job? Why?
John: I already finished my studies and graduated last week. Now, I want to get a job in t
he
Finance field. Payroll is not exactly Finance.
Nancy: How long have you been looking for a new job?
John: I just started this week.
Nancy: Didn’t you have any interviews with those firms that came to our campus last
month? Ibelieve quite a few companies came to recruit students for their Finance

departments.
John: I could only get one interview with Fidelity Company because of my heavy work-
schedule. A month has already gone by, and I have not heard from them. I guess I did not
make it.
Nancy: Don’t worry, John. You always did well in school. I know your good grades will
help you get a job soon. Besides, the job market is pretty good right now, and all
companies need financial analysts.
John: I hope so.
Nancy: You have prepared a resume, right?
John: Yes.
Nancy: Did you mail your resume to a lot of companies? How about recruiting agencies?
John: I have sent it to a dozen companies already. No, I have not thought about recruiting
agencies. But, I do look closely at the employment ads listed in the newspaper every day.
Nancy: Are there a lot of openings?

19
John: Quite a few. Some of them require a certain amount of experience and others are
willing to train.
Nancy: My friends told me that it helps to do some homework before you go to an
interview. You need to know the company well—
what kind of business is it in? What types of products does it sell? How is it doing lately?
John: Yes, I know. I am doing some research on companies that I want to work for. I
want to be ready whenever they call me in for an interview.
Nancy: Have you thought about questions they might ask you during the interview?
John: What types of questions do you think they will ask?
Nancy: Well, they might ask you some questions about Finance theories to test your
academic understanding.
John: I can handle that.
Nancy: They might tell you about a problem and want you to come up with a solution.
John: I don’t know about that. I hope I will be able to give them a decent response if the
need arises.
Nancy: They will want to know you a little bit before they make a hiring decision. So, the
y may ask you to describe yourself. For example, what are your strengths and your
weaknesses? How do you get along with people?
John: I need to work on that question. How would I describe myself? Huh!
Nancy: Also, make sure you are on time.Nothing is worse than to be late for an interview.
You do not want to give them a bad impression, right from the start.
John: I know. I always plan to arrive about 10 or 15 minutes before the interview starts.
Nancy: Good decision! It seems that you are well prepared for your job search. I am sure
you will find a good job in no time.
John: I hope so.
Nancy: I need to run; otherwise, I will be late for school. Good luck in your job search,
John.
John: Thank you for your advice. Bye!

PRESENTATION ON ANIMATION

Introduction
Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or
model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. The effect is an optical
illusion of motion due to the phenomenon of persistence of vision, and can be created and
demonstrated in several ways. The most common method of presenting animation is as a
motion picture or video program.
Discovery of Name
"Animation" discovered from the Latin name anima, the "animating principle",
the vital force inside every living creature.
History of Indian Animation
• The first animated film from India is considered to be "EkAnekAurEkta", a
short traditionally animated short educational film released in 1974from Doordarshan's
Film Division.

• The first Indian animated television series is GhayabAaya, aired in 1986 and directed
by SuddhasattwaBasu.
• The first Indian 3D animated film is Roadside Romeo, which was a joint venture
between Yash Raj Films and the Indian division of the Walt Disney Company. It was
written and directed by JugalHansraj.
Animatronics
Animatronics is the use of mechatronics to create machines which
seem animate rather than robotic. Animatronic creations include animals
(including dinosaurs), plants and even mythical creatures. A robot designed to be a
convincing imitation of a human is specifically known as an android. Animatronics is
mainly used in movie making.
3D Animation in Bollywood Movies
The first Indian 3D animated film is Roadside Romeo - 2008
Techniques of Computer Animation
Computer animation encompasses a variety of techniques, the unifying factor
being that the animation is created digitally on a computer.
• 2D Animation

• 3D Animation

• Character animation

• Chuckimation
28
• Multi-sketching

• Special effects animation

• Animatronics

• Stop motion
2D animation
2D animation figures are created and/or edited on the computer using 2D bitmap
graphics or created and edited using 2D vector graphics. This includes automated
computerized versions of traditional animation techniques such as morphing. 2D
animation has many applications, including analog computer animation, Flash
animation and PowerPoint animation.
3D animation
3D animation is digitally modeled and manipulated by an animator. In order to
manipulate a mesh, it is given a digital skeletal structure that can be used to control the
mesh. This process is called rigging. Various other techniques can be applied, such as
mathematical functions (ex. gravity, particle simulations), simulated fur or hair, effects
such as fire and water and the use of motion capture to name but a few, these techniques
fall under the category of 3D dynamics.
List of Indian animated Movies

Vijesh Anupkumar
For cricket:
1. The obsession for cricket can never be a retardant for other sports because cricket
is only one step more popular than other sports.
2. Real talent in any sports in always recognized as seen in the case of Viswanathan
an and in chess and saina nehwal in badminton
3. As cricket is welcomed more than any other sport, the media attach more
importance to it.
4. The players are also more sponsored because they have a better reach than other
sports persons.

Against cricket
5. Cricket between foreign teams is also widely covered, but hockey matches played
by the Indian team go unreported.
6. Even a family function of a cricketer is much talked about where as we fail to
acknowledge the presence of world champions like Pankaj, Advani and Manavit
Singh sandhu in shooting.
7. Cricketers are showered with monetary benefits but the likes of Arman, Ibrahim
and, lava shag have to compromise on quality training due to lack of financial
support.
8. Olympic medallists get only a momentary coverage of their life time hard work
but a single world cup victory is still savoured and the players are still
remembered.

Conclusion
The obsession of cricket has not retarded the growth of other sports and its players
be given their due recognition and importance by the media and the public.
