English Language Teaching (ELT) and Integration of Media Technology: Critic Paper

Partial Requirement in ELT 212 Teaching English as s Second Language

A. KEY IDEAS

1. Technology

 It is method, system, and devices which are the result of scientific knowledge

being used for practical purposes. Considering the growing demands on the

use of technology (ICT), there are factors affecting ICT integration in English

language teaching and the tools used for teaching. The tools of technology,

such as laptop, computer, web 2.0, and software and hardware applications

have been promoted as great tools for the changing and reform education.

Yet, it is not an easy way to engage it into reality as assumed by the

experience of the educational agents around the world. Promoting the

technology use in diverse way for the purpose of educational platforms needs

longer time as it is not automatic process.

2. Media

 It is an intermediary in order to transport information used to communicate.

Medias let to disseminate information to a large number of people without

customization of the message. However the term is used in more general

senses, to designate the means of communication such as language, writing or

music.

3. Media Technology

 Technology and methods that support human communication over distances

in time and space.

4. Computer Mediated Communication (CMC)


 It is the broad term for technologies which allows language learners to

communicate with other learners or native speakers through text or audio

including e-mails , discussion forums, text messaging, chat and conferencing.

B. METHODOLOGY

The participants of this study are 100 EFL learners, at JCC, King Abdul Aziz

University, KSA to find out the impact of media technology in ELT classes in general an

in improving listening and writing skills.

This study uses experimental approach were there are controlled and uncontrolled

groups, pre and post test. Three types of statistical survey were given to the respondents.

First and foremost a survey was undertaken to explore the general response of the

students to the integration of media technology in ELT classes. 100 students at graduate

level were chosen for the survey. The second survey is based on impact of media

technology in improving pronunciation of individual words. This test was based on pre-

test and post-test. Pre-test was conducted before the integration of media. Afterwards, the

same students were given post-test with the integration of technology or internet. The

third test was conducted or based on writing skills which is incorporated pre-test, post-

test and final test.

C. SIGNIFICANCE

a. The study confirmed that the 90% participants were purportedly highly agree with

the integration of media technology in ELT classes.

b. The study reveals that 70% students view that media technology has the potentials

to train as well to entertain the learners. A large number of students reported that
media technology provides students with exciting experience in learning process

and tremendously increases their motivation level.

c. This study also deduced the impact of media technology on pronunciation of

individual students has gone very high

d. The study were able to illustrate the impact of media technology on writing skills

was found significantly different in the pre-test, post-test and final test upon its

integration.

A. Gaps in the Study

a. The study is not able to discuss the social structure and background of the

respondents. This might be useful in order to test the validity and reliability of the

study.

b. The researcher fails to gather the opinions or the beliefs of the teachers as well as

the parents about the use of media technology inside the school.

c. The paper is not able to explain thoroughly the scope of the study, the sampling

method and formula employed in the paper.

B. Possible Extension

a. The researcher could dissect the implication of the changes to their life and way

of living.

b. The researcher could also touch the negative impact of media technology.

c. The researcher could also discuss the recent / up-to-date media technology.
