Chapter I

Introduction

Social networking sites, especially Facebook have

become so popular today that they are leading words on

the lips of every student. You love to spend most of your

time checking your Facebook updates, but do you know that

there are many negative effects of using Facebook?

Most of the students don’t realize the negative

effect impact of Facebook on their life. And the main

reason is because they are already addicted to it.

Nowadays, instead of studying they spend more hours

on surfing Facebook. Browsing the net, playing with

online games and passing non-stop SMSs and chatting with

friends, thereby making reading a book or any other piece

of written material in a quiet or peaceful corner of a

library or home become an archaic or an old idea for most

students. Obama (2008) in his speech pinpointed that

children cannot achieve unless they raise their

expectations and turn off television sets. Shabi and

Udofia (2009) noted that active learning from books is

better than passive learning such as watching televisions

and playing games. Students are rarely interested in

reading for pleasure and enjoyment instead they read only

to pass examination. But when the examination came, some

of students can't comprehend or understand question

because they just want to pass.

This research focused on finding ways to

enhance students’ motivation and improve their

achievements.

This research is conducted this 2nd Semester, S.Y

2017-2018 and we will be having an interview and asking a

questionnaire about "Impact of Facebook on Students

Academic Performance" with the random Grade 12 Senior

High School Students of PHINMA-ARAULLO University-South

Campus.

The gathered data in this research may help SHS students

to minimize the duration of time using Facebook app and

this will also help us to have enough time to focus

developing and to work on students’ Academic Performance.

IMPACT OF FACEBOOK USAGE ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Currently Facebook is used by many people to connect with

their friends and relatives around the globe (Brydolf,

2007). And the use of Facebook platforms has grown so

fast that it has even attracted the attention of

university students; they are so engrossed in the sites

that they have almost completely forgotten about their

academic work. University students are considered victims

of the social media sites more than any group of people

as they negatively impact their academic performance

(Pasek & Hargittai, 2009). Students easily get tempted to

use the various social media platforms when trying to

obtain learning materials online. In most cases, the

students end up spending almost all their times on the

social media and forget about the course materials they

originally intended to look for.

Ellison et al (2011) claim that students Furthermore tend

to participate in such website activities while doing

their homework so that it may have negative effect on

their academic performances by interrupting them from the

learning process. Therefore, it is becoming difficult to

ignore the fact that there might be a direct correlation

between Facebook usage and student academic performance

shown at schools and universities

Younger generations (e.g., students) spend many hours up

to 8 per day surfing this socializing website. We presume

that an extensive presence on Facebook and the resulting

increased levels of information flow management

requirement engage students in these tasks while they

engaged in constant interactions and socialization, which

prohibit them from focusing appropriately on their

academic tasks (Chen, et al., 2010).

THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE- A CASE OF MALAYSIA TERTIARY INSTITUTION

The use of social media among students has reached high

levels and has affected their study time, poor grammar

and wrong spellings when socializing on social media as

well as diverting their attention from their studies

(Ndaku, 2013). Students spend much of their study time on

social networks than in their academic undertakings and

it has affected their Grade Point Average (GPA).

The advanced and improved usage of social media platforms

such as Facebook has become a worldwide phenomenon for

quite some time. Though it all started has been a hobby

for several computer literates individual has changed to

become a social norm and existence-style for students

around the world (Nicole, 2007). According to Nicole,

(2007), students and teenagers have especially recognized

these social media platforms to be able to contact their

peers, share information, reinvent their personas and

showcase their social live.

Facebook users often experience poor academic

performance. Also Karpinski (2009) stated that social

media has a negative association with students’ academic

performance which is much greater than the advantages

derived through the use of social media platforms. People

around the globe have been addicted to the internet which

has given rise to more students using social media more

often than before.

It was highlighted in the finding of Karpinski (2009)

that social media platforms (Facebook, watzapp etc) users

usually devote lesser time to their studies has to

compared to nonusers did and subsequently has lower GPAs.

It was also mentioned by Karpinski, & Duberstein (2009),

that among the major distraction of current generation

that social media platform (such Facebook, Watzapp etc.)

remains a major distraction. According to Kubey, Lavin,

and Barrows (2001), there is a correlation between

academic performance and the dependency on social media

platforms.

According to the outcome, students’ academic performance

is affected the more they use Facebook. Social platforms

are mainly used by students for socializing activities

rather than academic purpose (Oye, 2012). In addition

(Oye, 2012) said that majority of students feel that

social platforms have positive impact on academic growth.

In a different research conducted by Shana (2012) it was

ascertain that students use platforms mainly for chatting

and making friends.

THE IMPACT OF FACEBOOK USAGE ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Socialization

Facebook is an effective socialization tool. Many users

reported that their main reason of joining Facebook

affect their performance due to the distraction afforded

by Facebook. It has been observed that Facebook users

reported spending less time studying compared to non-

Facebook users. High rates of Internet usage during

classroom periods are associated with lower exam scores.

Kirschner and Karpinski, suggested that there is a

significant negative relationship between the use of

Facebook and academic performance.

Entertainment

Literature shows that most people use Facebook for

entertainment. Nyland et al. pointed out that most users

accessed Facebook for recreational and entertainment

purposes. However, this justification has been found

negatively affect social capital. There are also many

users who use it to share fun and enjoyable activities

with others. Indeed, people are likely to upload

materials that are related to entertainment in Facebook.

A STUDY ON THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL NETWORKING

SITES SUCH AS FACEBOOK AMONG ASIA PACIFIC SCHOLARS IN
MALAYSIA

Today’s college students (which consist of Generation Y

or also named Millennial) are exposed to all types of

technologies in many aspects of their lives (Browning,

Gerlich, & Westermann, 2011). On a daily basis they use

desktop computers, laptops, E-readers, tablets, and cell

phones to actively engage in social networking, text

messaging, blogging, content sharing, online learning,

and much more (Cassidy, Griffin, Manolovitz, Shen, &

Turney, 2011).

Reynol Junco (2012) in his article named too much face

and not enough books: The relationship between multiple

indices of Facebook use and academic performance. Found

that that time spent on Facebook and checking Facebook

were negatively related to overall GPA, and time spent on

Facebook is slightly negatively related to time spent

studying. In addition, the ability of time spent on

Facebook to significantly predict overall GPA shows that

there may be negative academic effects for students who

use Facebook in certain ways.

In addition, Paul, Baker, Cochran, in 2012 wrote an

article named effect of online social networking on

student academic performance. The researcher’s results

revealed a statistically significant negative

relationship between time spent by students on OSN and

their academic performance. Time spent on OSN is shown to

negatively impact academic performance. As time spent on

social networking sites increases, the academic

performance of the students is seen to deteriorate. This

ties in well with the findings presented in Kirschner and

Karpinski (2010), which reveal that over-involvement or

obsession with social networking by students can have

negative impacts on academic performance (Kirschner &

Karpinski, 2010).

Moreover, Rosen, Carrier, and Cheever 2013 wrote an

article named Facebook and texting made me do it: Media-

induced task-switching while studying. They believe that

this area is a technologically rich world, where

multitasking is the norm and is more prominent among

youth and college students. In their research they found

out that students manage to do their work and also

interact with the virtual environment effectively.

Facebook has nearly one billion users worldwide (Smith,

2012) with more than 90% of teens (Common Sense Media,

2012) and college students (Junco, 2011) actively

engaged.

However, as results the authors found that corroborating

the work on the impact of social media on academic

performance, participants who accessed Facebook one or

more times during the study period had lower grade point

averages. Furthermore, Junco (2011) discovered that

sharing links and checking up with friends on Facebook

more often predicted higher college grades; making status

updates more often predicted lower grades; and that

overall GPA dropped 12 points for every 93 min above the

average of 106 min per day spent on Facebook.

The result of the study can benefit the following:

- Students can benefit in this research they can be

aware that using all their time in Facebook can affect

their academic performance the purpose of this research

is that help the students of Phinma Araullo south to be

aware and for them to manage their time in using Facebook

and to their study.

- Teachers can also benefit in this research. For

them to be aware also that their students were distracted

and didn’t pay attention to their class, so that teachers

can report their students to their parents.

- Parents will guide their sons to finish their

homework’s before using their Facebook. At this point the

students can really manage their time. The time in using

Facebook can be lessen because there is someone is

guiding them and helping them to balance their time.

- School would benefit because the grade of the

students will increase it will be a good image to the
