1 INTRODUCTION

In today’s competitive & uncertain environment, growth in complex & large

construction increasing at a faster rate. Ultimately, project managers have no
or very less options of project management tools, that can monitor the large
scale projects. Here ‘Oracle Primavera’ is the solution.
Oracle Primavera is a simple & standard software which is used to monitor
the complex project. Primavera is recognised as one of the best project
management tool which can monitor & schedule the project in a simple &
efficient way. Generally the software is widely used across the globe in various
industrial sectors such as Oil & Gas, Manufacturing, Construction, Energy &
Power.
The acceptance of the software Primavera as a platform of scheduling is been
on a boom in Multi National Construction Companies, but due to ignorance
and lack of Project Management concepts and discourage towards the use of
computer based programs, small and medium scale Indian construction
companies confront various issues such as inefficient planning, project delays,
inefficiency of resources and many other issues. Also Contractors in India are
reluctant to use project planning and scheduling techniques, which are being
used worldwide and already proved as benchmark for completion of project
on time.
It is primarily a visualization tool, which has improved the ability to exchange
complex ideas among project participants. It has become easy to generate and
reuse the information for construction projects. This is a ‘CIEPM’ (Computer
Integrated Enterprise Project Management) concept which allows the
meaningful extraction of project management data, information and
knowledge from the participants beyond their imagination. A number of
viewpoints have been given by the researchers to the practitioners for adopting
this new technology for their own benefits. The construction industry is an
integral component of a nation’s infrastructure and industrial growth. Many
problems and issues are being faced by the construction industry, the majority
of them are cost overruns and time overruns due to inadequate project
formulation, poor planning for implementation and improper management
during execution. Observations show that proper skillful management is
essential for a project to complete within time, estimated budget and with
allocated resources. Providing good planning, proper organization, sufficient
flow of resources to the project can automatically achieve the desired result.
A warning mechanism must be present, which can alert the organization about
its possible success and failures throughout the project.
Project Monitoring acts like a warning mechanism; it is the process of
recording, collecting and reporting information regarding project performance
that the project manager and others wish to know. Monitoring includes
watching the progress of the project against time, performance schedule and
resources during actual execution of the project and it identified the lagging
areas which require timely attention and actions. Large projects become more
complex and the ability to exchange information on paper within the
organization on a timely basis gets difficult.
The traditional project management system cannot meet the demands of
today’s projects, as a tremendous amount of information and data on a project
is always changing. The main objectives of this study are to plan, schedule,
and track an industrial project with the help of primavera software, also to
recommend measures to the organization for enhancing their project planning
for similar projects in future.
2 OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this research work is to determine Planning, Scheduling

and allocation of resources for multi storied building structure using Oracle’s
software. Factors affecting on quality and process cycle time for the actual site
were analyzed using questionnaire survey and literature review. Survey data were
then used to develop the level of work or scheduling.
In order to achieve the goal of study following steps are proposed;

 To review literature pertaining to the planning, scheduling of the multi

storied building structure.

 Collection & analyze the data according to the requirement of software’s.

 Scheduling the activities of building by collected data in both Primavera &

Microsoft Project.

 Comparing the results obtained by both software's to find the significant &
feasible one.
3 STUDY AREA

 High Rise Residential Building “Tirumala Town” B-Wing, Chota Bangarda,

Indore.

 Project starts at May 2015.

 B-Wing project duration Dec 2016 – Mar 2020.

 B-Wing estimated construction cost 25 crores.

 Total Area of wing is 50000 Sq. Ft.

 Project contains G+9 floors.

 Each floor includes 1BHK (10 Flats), 2BHK (3 Flats) & 3BHK (8 Flats).

 B-Wing total contains 185 Flats.

 Size of Flats –
1BHK = 484 Sq. Ft
2BHK = 727 – 950 Sq. Ft
3BHK = 1050 – 1250 Sq. Ft
 B-Wing also contains a Swimming pool of size 20’ X 40’

 Each wing contain 4 lifts.

 Grade of concrete used M-25 & M-30.

4 LITERATURE REVIEW

The text of this chapter has been discusses about the studies reviewed that
Planning, Scheduling and allocation of resources for multi storied building
structure as:

 Annappa & Jamadar (2017) studied that the software Primavera proved
like a perfect and efficient tool for the purpose of monitoring and
controlling of the various construction project. The usages of various
resources throughout the project run would be optimum. They also finds
that primavera fulfills the role of planning, Scheduling, Monitoring and
Control of the project progress with timely accomplishment of any
construction project.

 Thangam, P., (2016) discuss that, before work was carried out was not
done properly with lack of planning, scheduling and resource allocation.
So that resources were wasted and their result in increasing time. After
using primavera software in work, it gives improvement in quality of
construction with stipulated cost and time.

 Deepika et al. (2016) stated that Primavera is a very useful in finding out
critical activities so that special concern can be given to those activities
and delay in the project can be avoided.

 Subramani, T., (2015) tells about the Primavera P6 software and

advantages of Primavera P6 software, he says that Primavera P6 is
amazing software which is not only used by project planners but anyone
involved in project, i.e. managers, engineers, schedulers can use Primavera
P6software, focusing on the comparison of construction estimate methods
application in usefulness project. Primavera permits users to generate
project templets, which can be kept and used for future project, also
Primavera can also be used to group and view multiple project at the same
time.

 Fernans et al. (2013) found that the present project management system
is not efficient and studied the project management software Primavera P6
and found that such software's are very efficient in planning, monitoring
and controlling.
 Bhosekar et al. (2012) stated From the comparison of result of Microsoft
Project and Primavera P6 they found that the final result gives almost
99.5% accuracy.

 Polekar et al. (2015) identified defects in the planning, scheduling

procedure. They also found that the contractors and subcontractors play
vital role in the completion of the project on schedule, because major
reasons of delay were related to contractor’s performance.

 Ahmed et al. (2016) found that with the help of Primavera Software profit
outcome of the project can be increased. They also identified that 5%
reduction in the cost of labor can be achieved with the use of Primavera
software.

 Ranjithkumar et al. (2017) stated that planning and scheduling with

Primavera software provide detailed information about cost control, time
management, working hour management, update and monitoring and
delay of activities which enhance effectiveness in delivering services.

 Saini et al. (2017) stated that the Primavera software shows the progress
of the project step by step and it can show the clear image of the project
progress which helps in minimizing the impact of delays in the project.
5 THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

The two mains scheduling and control software packages used in the building,
construction and resources industries (BCRCs) are:
• Microsoft Project
• Oracle Primavera P6.

Microsoft Project-
Microsoft Project was developed in the US during for the management of the
development of Microsoft software. It was put on sale in 1984 and was aimed at
managing software development projects.
Microsoft Project is the world's most popular project management software
developed and sold by Microsoft. The application is designed to assist project
managers in developing plans, assigning resources to tasks, tracking progress,
managing budgets and analyzing workloads.
Microsoft project is mainly used by the following types of companies:
 Residential builders.
 Architects and Quantity Surveyors.
 Companies constructing small and medium commercial buildings.
 Smaller civil construction companies.

Oracle Primavera-
This was originally called Eagle Ray in the US in 1990s and purchased by
Primavera Systems. This again was developed for the management of software,
business development projects and building & construction projects. Primavera
is generally own by ‘Oracle’.
Oracle Primavera is mainly used by the following types of companies:
 Companies constructing large commercial buildings.
 Medium and large civil construction companies.
 Almost all resource companies in the mining and oil and gas industries.
