The Effect of Technology on Culture

To examine the effects technology has on culture we must first find out
what is CULTURE and TECHNOLOGY.

Culture
According to the Oxford Dictionary CULTURE is defined as “The ideas, customs,
and social behavior of a particular people or society.”

Technology
According to the Oxford Dictionary TECHNOLOGY is defined as “The application of
scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry.
‘advances in computer technology’

So, it is now clearly understood that the research is going to be on how

technology affects “The ideas, customs, and social behavior of a particular
people or society.”

According to nuglobalstudies.wordpress.com Technology and culture goes

hand in hand as technology develops culture changes and from since the
beginning of time technology has influenced culture either in a negative or
positive way. For example, in the 19th century America had and industrial
revolution where machines were making goods that were previously made in the
home in large number. This revolution had four major effects on the American
culture. The first was that goods that had to made from scratch could now have
been bought from a store.
This had made a way of conservation of time instead of making clothing,
producing food and other things for their family. To the effect of all this time
being on their hand the devoted it to their personal needs and that lead to the
development of leisure activities. American culture then expanded with theatres,
social clubs and sports.
But the technology and culture cycle weren’t only an American
phenomenon it was also seen throughout the world. In places such as Great
Britain in the 19th Century collected and catalogued exotic seeds and plants from
all over the world. The study of plants for commercial use and profit made it clear
that whoever controlled the natural resources had global power.
In the 20th century, agricultural technology pushed small farms out of
business in favor of larger industrialized corporate farms. Advances like
genetically modified seeds initially appeared to be the final step towards solving
the World’s food shortages, especially in Third World nations. Seeds designed to
thrive in foreign climates or repel pests sounded like a positive advancement in
agriculture. However, many farming communities were destroyed as a result of
forcing people to move or gain new employment.

POEM

David John Mowers

AUTOMATA
To lessen liabilities,
to lower costs and
make the world more,
more productive; exacting...

To make everything easier,

a life more fulfilling...
...more predictable, perhaps,
more equal than now.

To eliminate sadness,
anger, depression, anxiety.
To work less at everything,
they will do it all for me.

The planet will be saved by the extirpation of human activity...

...for who needs humans to trade stock?

...who needs humans to make widgets?
...who needs humans to clean things?

Who needs humans at all?

Plan of Investigation

The reason I chose the issue “The Effect Of Technology On Culture” under
the topic technology is mainly because as the years go by people or society as a
whole have evolved the way in which to operate and do certain things and even
changing the way they make their livelihood as the years go by and technology
changes or moreover evolves, due to these intelligent observations this topic has
aroused my interest as a student of English so I have decided to research the
effect of technology on culture.
As a student of English this issue would be beneficial to me due to the
information I would gain and also additional researching skills can be acquired
that would carry me throughout my life.
To complete such an intriguing research, I plan to get my information from
online articles, textbooks, poems and even images to further understand how the
technology affects culture and if it is positively or negatively affected but it thus
helping complete my English School Based Assessment.
