Marital Status of the Population by Age, Sex and Race

Abstract
In my report, I will show the steadily decline in marriages and the increasing rates of divorce of
the past several years. Details of how this problem affects everyone and their families but
particularly the African American Culture. I will also discuss how the age, sex, and education
play a major role. I will be using facts and statistics from the United States Census Bureau, to
provide my report.

Magnitude of Divorce by Age and Sex

Descriptive Discussion

According to this graph the divorce rates are higher for males and females 55-65.This graph
shows the divorce rates are higher among females in America, ages ranging from 30 – 34 and all
the way to 55-64. Females in America according to this graph get divorce at a higher rate.
Females between the age 55-64 get divorce more than females 30-34. The graph shows that older
males and females get divorce at an older age.

Interpretive Discussion

In the graph it shows that the divorce rates in America increases with age. In America the
divorce rates are higher for males and females ages 55-64. This graph show no matter how old
females are they, they get divorce more than males do. What surprising; is that women ages 55-
64 are getting divorce than women 30-34. Most women 55-64 would be stable in their marriages.

Scope of Divorce in the U.S. by Race

Descriptive Discussion

The graph shows that throughout the U.S. divorce affects all races. The race most affect by
divorce are black people at a 12% rate compared to the other races. Whites and Hispanics are not
far behind with, whites at 10% and Hispanics at 7%. There is a big difference between Blacks
and Asian when it comes to difference in America.

Interpretive Discussion

Throughout the U.S. divorce affect all races, but some more than others. Black people are at an
increasing rate of divorce. 12% of the Black community in America is affected compared to
whites at a 10% rate and Hispanics at a 7%. Blacks are more likely to get divorce compared to
Asians, who only have a 4% rate of divorce.

Changes of divorce over the years by race and sex

Descriptive Discussion

The graph shows that divorce has been increasing. From 1990-2008 the divorce rates have been
increasing among males and females. The divorce rates are higher for females than males
according to the graph. There was a slight decrease in the divorce rates among males in 2005;
from 8.8% in 1990 to 10.3% in 2000 and 9.8% in 2005. For females the divorce rates have been
steadily increasing. There is always a 2% difference in the divorce between males and females.

Interpretive Discussion

Divorce has been increasing among men and women from 1990 -2008. From 1990 to 2008
women have been ahead of men in divorce. The divorce rates have been increasing for women
more than men in the past few years. There was a slight decrease in divorce for men between
2000 and 2005 but it has been increasing since then. Women are affected by divorce more than
men; there is always this 2% gap between them.

Disparities of the divorce rates in 2008

Descriptive Discussion

The divorce rates affect all races. Females of all races are a getting divorce at a higher rate than
males. Among the females getting divorce at high rate are blacks are at the top of the divorce
rate. Black females are getting divorce at a high rate of 13.7% percent compared to Whites at an
11.7%. Both male and females Asians are at the bottom of the divorce rate.

Interpretive Discussion

The divorce rates were high in 2008 and are still increasing. In the case of race, one of the big
issues was that more African American was getting divorced than Whites and Hispanics. It’s no
better; that when it comes to the sexes Men get divorced at a lower rate than women. Black
females are getting divorce more that all the races and among the females.
