different people, in different ways, have made this possible. I would like to extend my
appreciation from the deep core of my heart especially to the following.

At first I would like to thank the almighty Allah for the wisdom and perseverance that He
has been bestowed upon me during this research project. It is the mercy of Allah that
enables me to complete the research successfully.

I would like to thank my mother for her unconditional support, both financially and
emotionally throughout my degree. The patience and understanding shown by her during
my honors years is greatly appreciated.

I am very grateful to the respected supervisor Md. Mohoshin Reza, chairman of the
Department of English, BUBT for his valuable guidance, advice, support and comments
during the course of my thesis. Without his guidance, I would not be able to complete this
research successfully.

I also convey the sense of my gratitude to the persons, institutions who helped me with
opinion, information and comments while preparing the papers. I am indebted to all of

Abstract

The present study attempts to observe the methods used in English language teaching and
communicative language teaching in higher secondary level education in Bangladesh.
The researcher finds that the condition of the students and also the methods used for CLT
at higher secondary level is not satisfactory. So she feels an interest to study on it. The
topic of the research is “The difficulties of the teachers in implementing CLT at the
Secondary Level in Bangladesh”. The research is divided into nine chapters.

The introductory chapter describes the rationale of the study, the objectives of study and
also about the ELT policy in Bangladesh.

The second chapter discusses about the methodology. It includes research methodology,
data collection, sample, sources of data, data analysis etc.

Chapter three is about English language teaching in Bangladesh. It includes the


chronological history of English in Bangladesh, the colonial period, Pakistan period and
post-liberation period (Bangladesh period).

The forth chapter is about the concept of English language teaching in which definitions
of Terms, history of English language teaching, history of foreign language education,
learning strategies, teaching strategies etc are discussed.

Chapter five is education policy in Bangladesh. Directorate of secondary and higher


education and history of education system in Bangladesh are the topics discussed here.

Chapter six discusses the overview of English Curriculum of class XI and XII. It includes
the objectives, syllabus and terminal competencies for class 11-12. It also discusses
teaching methodology, teaching aids and guides and so on.

Chapter seven discusses the works related to English language teaching in Bangladesh.

Chapter nine includes conclusion and recommendation. The chapter also makes
inferences so that further research can be conducted in the field. After that there are
references and appendices.
