About This Manual
Purpose
This manual provides procedures and guidelines that support the maintenance on the
ZXA10 C300M/C350M Multi-Service Access Equipment.

Intended Audience
This document is intended for:
l On-site maintenance engineers
l Network monitoring engineers
l System maintenance engineers

Prerequisite Skill and Knowledge


To use this document effectively, users should have a general understanding of network
technology. Familiarity with the following is helpful:
l The ZXA10 C300M/C350M system and its various components
l Maintenance procedures
l Local operating procedures

1.1 Safety Precautions


Safety Precautions for Protection Ground
The safety precautions for protection ground are as follows:
l Connect the grounding cable first before installing the equipment. Remove the
grounding cable after removing all the equipment.
l Prohibit to destroy the grounding conductor.
l Prohibit to operate on the equipment without installing the grounding conductor.
l The equipment must be connected with the protection ground perpetually. Before
operating on the equipment, check the electrical connection and make sure that the
equipment grounding is reliable.

Safety Precautions for Batteries


The safety precautions for the storage battery are as follows:
l Always keep the electrodes of a battery facing upward when moving a battery. Do not
put it upside down or tilt it.
l Avoid battery short-circuit caused by metal objects. If possible, cut off the power
supply of the battery before performing other operations.
l During their working periods, batteries will release inflammable gas, so they should
be placed in the environment which is well ventilated with proper fire prevention
measures.
l When a battery is over 60℃ in temperature, check it for any spill of acid liquid. Handle
timely if there is any spill of acid liquid.
l When moving or handling a battery with leakage, be careful to protect yourself from
any possible harm by the acid liquid. Use NaHCO3 or Na2CO3 to neutralize or absorb
them if any spill of acid liquid is found.
l Wash with clean water if anyone touches any spill of the battery. If the situation is
quite serious, take him to the hospital.
The safety precautions for the li-ion battery are as follows:
l Replace with the same type of battery recommended only.
l Handle the used-up battery according to instructions only.

l Do not throw the li-ion battery into the fire.

Safety Precautions for Laser


The laser receiver and transmitter is used in the optical transmission system and the related
test tools. The bared optical fiber or the connector port can transmit laser which is invisible
to the naked eyes. Looking at it without any protection may hurt eyes.
The eyes are not hurt if you gaze at the bared optical fiber tips or damaged optical fiber
in a distance of over 150 mm. But the eyes may be hurt if you observe the bared optical
fiber tip with a microscope, a magnifier or a loupe.
The safety precautions for laser are as follows:
l Only the authorized personnel with the corresponding training can perform the
operation.
l Wear safety goggles while handling laser or optical fibers.
l Make sure to switch off the optical source before disconnecting the optical fiber
connector.
l Prohibit to gaze at the bare optical fiber or the connector tips before the optical source
is surely switched off.
l Measure the optical power in the optical fiber with an optical power meter to make
sure the optical source is switched off.
l When opening the front door of the optical fiber transmission system, be careful to
avoid the laser radiation.
l Prohibit to use optical instrument including the microscope, the magnifier or the loupe
to observe the optical fiber connector or the optical fiber tips.
Do as follows when handling the optical fibers:
l Only the personnel with corresponding training can shear, fuse and splice the optical
fiber.
l Make sure the optical fiber and optical source is disconnected before shearing, fusing
and splicing the optical fiber. After disconnecting the optical fiber, protect all the optical
fiber connectors with the optical fiber caps.

Safety Precautions for Plugging/Unplugging Cards


The safety precautions for plugging/unplugging cards are as follows:
l Make sure that the card matches with the slot.
l Wear the antistatic wrist strip before operation.
l Plug in the card along sliding rail. If the card is blocked, do not shake the card to
prevent any damage to the card.

precautions which you have to consider during the device installation, operation and
maintenance.

The routine maintenance consists of the maintenance at the equipment side and at the
NMS side.
l Routine maintenance at the equipment side

2.2 Routine Maintenance Precautions


The precautions for the routine maintenance are as follows:

l Keep the equipment room clean, and in normal temperature and humidity.
l Keep the equipment room away from dust and moisture. Take measures to keep
insects and rodents away.
l Make sure that the primary power is stable and reliable. Check the system grounding
and lightning ground periodically. Check the lightning protection system before and
after storms.
l Establish a complete set of maintenance regulations. The maintenance engineers
must take detailed maintenance logs about the system operation, software version,
configuration change, upgrading and troubleshooting for fault analysis and solutions
in the future.
l It is prohibited to play games or access the Internet on the terminal. It is forbidden to
install, run, or copy any irrelevant software on the terminal.

l Set the NMS passwords with different access rights. Change the passwords
periodically. Only the authorized personnel have the access rights.
l Maintenance personnel should be well trained and should have sound experience of
computer networks, and are willing to study further to improve their maintenance skills.
l Maintenance personnel should follow the relevant manual to perform maintenance
operations. They need to wear antistatic wrist straps before touching the hardware of
the equipment.
l Do not reset the equipment, load or change any data, especially the NE data unless
it is necessary. Back up the system configuration data before any change is made to
it and do not delete the backup configuration files until the system is running normally
(Generally after a week). It is necessary to record any change made on the data in
time.
l Prepare a toolkit and calibrate the meters regularly to make sure that they are working
properly. The following tools are often used:
à Screw driver (straight, cross)
à Signaling tester
à Thin nose bent pliers
à Network cable pliers
à Multi-meter
à AC power for maintenance
à Power extension lines and sockets
à Telephone cables
à Network cables
l Check the spare parts regularly. Store the spare parts and replaced faulty components
in different cartons and label them for identification.
l Keep the software and documents in good conditions and keep them at an easily
accessible place.
l The equipment room should be well lightened for maintenance. In case of power
failure, make necessary emergency arrangements.
l Put the contacts of the local office of ZTE Corporation at a noticeable place. Contact
the local office in case of emergency.

2.3 Routine Maintenance at Equipment Side

2.3.2 Equipment Routine Maintenance


Introduction
The routine maintenance on the ZXA10 C300M/C350M includes the checks on the
following items:
l Power cable and grounding cable
l Power supply and voltage

Power Cable and Grounding Cable


Table 2-2 lists the checks on the power cable and grounding cable.

Power Supply and Voltage


Table 2-3 lists the checks on the power supply and voltage.

Requirements l The ZXA10 C300M/C350M uses -48 V DC or -60 V DC


power supply. The equipment room is installed with an
AC/DC power transformer to supply the working power. The
DC power voltage is allowed to fluctuate between -57 V ~
-40 V or -72 V ~ -48 V.
l In order to make sure that the ZXA10 C300M/C350M keeps
working in case of the mains power fails, the emergency
power such as a diesel-electric set and storage battery is
required.
l The noise level of DC power supply voltage must meet the
technical specifications.
l DC power supply shall have over-voltage/current protection
and indication.

Fault handling When the test result is not in the standard range, check the input
power supply timely and make sure the backup power supply
is in the working status.

Fan Running Status


Table 2-4 lists the checks on the fan running status.

The LED status tells the running status of a card. The following are the details of the LED
status of each card.

Control and Switching Card LED Status


The ZXA10 C300M/C350M uses the following control and switching card, SCGM/SCXN.
Table 2-6 describes the LED status of the control and switching card.

Subscriber Card LED Status


The ZXA10 C300M/C350M uses the following subscriber cards:

l xDSL subscriber card
There is only one RUN LED on these subscriber cards. Table 2-7 describes the LED status
of these subscriber cards.

Common Interface Card LED Status


The ZXA10 C300M/C350M uses the common interface card, CICG/CICK.

Uplink Card LED Status


The ZXA10 C300M/C350M uses the following uplink cards:
l GUFQ
l GUSQ
l GUTQ
l HUTQ
l HUVQ
Table 2-9 describes the LED status of the uplink card.

Power Card LED Status


The ZXA10 C300M/C350M uses the power card, PRWG/PRWGS/PRWH.
Table 2-10 describes the LED status of the power card.

Green LED is OFF. The input voltage is abnormal (no input voltage ,
over-voltage or under-voltage).

Red LED is ON. The output voltage is abnormal (over-voltage or


under-voltage).

2.4 Routine Maintenance at NMS Side


Routine maintenance at the NMS side includes the following:

2.4.1 Monitoring Real-time Alarm


Perform this procedure to monitor the real-time alarms. Checking the alarms everyday is
helpful to solve the fault in time.

Prerequisites
Before monitoring the real-time alarm, make sure that:
l The NMS can manage the NE.
l The NE alarms can be reported to the NMS normally.

Steps
To monitor the real-time alarm, perform the following steps:
1. In the NetNumen Unified Management System (EMS Client) window, choose Fault
> Alarm Monitoring. The Alarm Monitoring tab appears, as shown in Figure 2-1.

2. Double-click the alarm you want to monitor. The NE dialog box appears, as shown in
Figure 2-2. The Detail tab displays the detailed information of the alarm.

3. Click the Handling Measures tab to display the processing suggestion, as shown in
Figure 2-3.

Table 2-12 describes buttons in the NE dialog box.

Acknowledge Click Acknowledge to display the Alarm acknowledge dialogue


box, in which you can make an acknowledgement.

Unacknowledge Click Acknowledge to display the Alarm unacknowledge


dialogue box, in which you can make an unacknowledgement.

Comment Click Comment to display the Comment dialogue box, in which


you can make a comment.

Clear Clear the current alarm information.

Forward Click Forward to display the Forwarding Setup dialogue box, in


which you can specify the way to send the alarm to the specified
person.
There are two options: Forward by Email and Forward by SMS

Export Export the alarm information as a file. You can select the file
format.

Copy Copy the alarm information to the clipboard.

2.4.2 Checking NE Backup Data


Prerequisites
The data is already backed up.

Related Information
After the NE data is backed up through the NetNumen unified management system, by
default, the NE backup data is saved under the folder C:\ftpdir\uni\conf of the host
where the NetNument system is installed.
The folder name indicates the time when the NE data is backed up, as shown in Figure
2-4. You can decide whether to back up the data as required.

Steps
To check the NE backup data, perform the following steps:

To monitor the NMS server performance, perform the following steps:
1. In the NetNumen Unified Management System (EMS Client) window, choose
Maintenance > System Monitor. The System Monitor window appears.
2. On the navigation tree, choose System Monitor > Server > AppServer to display the
System Performance Monitor tab, as shown in Figure 2-7.

3. On the System Performance Monitor tab, click Configure... to display the Configure
Performance Monitor dialog box, as shown in Figure 2-8. Configure CPU, RAM

current performance of the NetNumen server, including the monitoring period, the
RAM information, CPU usage, RAM usage, and hardware information.

Database Resource Monitor


To monitor the database resource, perform the following steps:
1. In the NetNumen Unified Management System (EMS Client) window, choose
Maintenance > System Monitor. The System Monitor window appears.
2. On the navigation tree, choose System Monitor > Database > SQLServer to display
the Database Resource Monitor tab, as shown in Figure 2-10.

3. On the Database Resource Monitor tab, click Configure... to display the Configure
Database Monitor SQLServer dialog box, as shown in Figure 2-11. Configure monitor
period, all database HD usage monitoring, and database used space monitoring as

2.4.4 Detecting Virus


Prerequisites
The NMS server is installed with the antivirus software.

Related Information
The virus often cause the NMS server to run abnormally or break down. Therefore, it’s
necessary to detect virus periodically.

Detecting Method
l Scan the system every week.
The virus scan tools such as Norton Antivirus or MacAfee are recommended. They
can scan virus and update periodically.
l Do not use the floppy disk drive or CD drive to perform read or write operations which
are irrelevant to maintenance.
l Make sure the floppy disk or CD is free of virus if you have to use it on the PC.

Normal Result
There is no virus or the virus can be deleted normally.
If there is any virus which cannot be deleted normally, update the antivirus database or
antivirus software timely.

3.1 Configuring FTP Server


Prerequisites
The NMS runs normally.

Related Information
The FTP server configuration of NMS is default. You needn’t to configure the FTP server
if the FTP server is only used for the routine management.

Steps
To modify the FTP service, perform the following steps:
1. Click Start > Program > NetNumen Unified Management System > NetNumen
Config Center to display the NetNumen Configuration Center window.
2. Click FTP Service on the left pane to display the FTP Server Information page, as
shown in Figure 3-1.

Perform this procedure to restore the NE data.

Prerequisites
Before restoring NE data, make sure that:
l The NE data is backed up.
l The NMS manages the NE normally.
l The FTP port of the upper-layer equipment is enabled. The backup data file can be
transmitted to the NMS server.

Context
Because this operation will restore the current NE data to the previous NE data, you have
to consult the operator before carrying out this operation. Wrong operation may cause
error data and affect the service.
To restore the NE data, perform the following steps:

The standby control and switching card works properly.

When the active control and switching card is faulty, you can switch over the active control
and switching card with the standby control and switching card, and then locate the fault.
To switch over the active control and switching card with the standby control and switching
control card, perform the following steps:

1. Expansion preparation
Confirm that the optical resources are enough for the expansion. If the resources are
not sufficient, negotiate with the operator. Otherwise, the service cannot be available
even the expansion is completed.

2. Confirm the NE version.


If the NE version is compatible, perform the next step directly. If the NE version needs
to be upgraded, upgrade the NE version first. For NE version upgrade, refer to the
chapter Version Upgrade.
3. Backup NE data and versions.

Cooperate with the operator’ personnel and the construction personnel to install the
device and give necessary installation guidance. Attention not to damage the pins on
the backplane or other components.

Note:
You need to wear the anti-static wrist strap.
You need to be more careful with the fiber pigtail and power.

5. Upload a card.

If you are at the locale, you can connect the device through the serial port. Use the
command to add a card. If you are not on the site, you can add a card on the NMS
remotely.
6. Configure the related services.

4.3 Solving Expansion Failure


If the card fails to work normally after expansion, perform the following steps:
1. Pull out the card, and add it once more.
2. If the card still fails to work, insert the card in another slot.
3. If the card still fails to work, replace the card. If the new card can work, the previous
card is faulty. Return the faulty card for repair.

Note:

Before you perform these operations, you need to make sure that your operations will not
affect the service. You cannot restart the NE or perform any operation which may affect the
service if you have not obtained the technical support or the approval from the operator.

5.1 Cutover Definition


Cutover is to replace a device which is currently running in the network with a new one
when there is minimum service traffic. The service is transmitted to the new one smoothly.
Cutover is often used to handle faults, update devices, promote new services, and optimize
the network structure.

Note:
If the service cannot be transmitted from the previous device to the new one, it is necessary
to switch the service back to the previous device immediately. Make sure that the service
can be restored in a certain period.

Preliminary Survey
The preliminary survey before the cutover includes the following:

l Communicate with the technicians from other related equipment manufacturers. Make
sure everyone is aware of the purpose and the significance of the cutover. Cutover is
not the best choice if there are other easier methods to deal with the existing problems.

l Do the on-site survey thoroughly. Confirm that the conditions for hardware installation,
the optical line resources (for uplink and downlink) and the upper-layer device
resources are sufficient.
l Fully be aware of the detailed networking situation of the cutover service.
l Specify the related departments and supervisors for each node in the network
concerned.

Caution!
Prohibit any unauthorized or illegal operation. The execution of any plan and the
processing of unexpected events must be implemented with the formal approval of the
operator and the technical support.

Make Cutover Plan


To make a cutover plan, perform the following steps:

1. Draft a cutover plan according to the network situation of actual services.


2. Urge the operator’s supervision department to organize the related departments and
their supervisors at each node in the network to attend a meeting for discussing the
draft. Record all the opinions from every department and the related precautions for
actual operation in detail.
3. Work out the start time and end time of installing the new device, debugging software
and testing the system. Decide the time for cutover.
4. After determining the cutover plan, apply for the approval of the higher authority.

Commission the New System


To commission the new system, perform the following steps:
1. Perform the commissioning work on the new system.
2. Implement the simulated test according to the features of the online services to ensure
that the online services can run normally after being transit to the new equipment.

Implement Cutover
To implement cutover, perform the following steps:

1. Determine the time of starting the cutover.


2. Inform the R&D department and the customer service department of the specific time
and other related events for cutover to get timely technical support in case of any
unexpected fault.

Make the following preparations for the cutover:

l Arrange the personnel properly.

à Considering the large traffic of the ZXA10 C300M/C350M, it is recommended


to arrange two groups of personnel. One group goes to the locale for on-site
operation. The other group stays at the operator’s NMS center for support.
à The personnel from the operator’s related departments, such as the transmission
department, power supply department, and the related upper-layer equipment
provider, also need to be on site. Even if they cannot be on site, they must be
sure to provide technical support in time.
l Prepare enough spare parts.
The previous device needs to be powered off and removed. If the cutover fails, the
service will be restored to the previous system. A fault may occur when the previous
system is powered on again. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare enough spare parts
for the previous system.
l Back up data.
Back up the data on the previous system, ensuring that the data is the latest.
If the cutover succeeds, confirm the following:
l Ping the ZXA10 C300M/C350M from the NMS. Check whether it is successful to ping
the device from the NMS.
l Check whether the port status and traffic are normal.
l Check whether the MAC address of the user can be learnt.

Work After Cutover


Observe the service running status after the cutover succeeds. Report the cutover details
to the supervision department. Keep the previous equipment on site. The service can be
restored to the previous system in case of any accident.
If the cutover fails, restore the service back to the previous system in the specified period.
For detailed operations, refer to the topic “Solving Cutover Failure”. Send the faults, alarms
and data to the technical engineers for analysis.

5.3 Solving Cutover Failure


Precautions
Precautions for the cutover failure are as follows:
l In principle, the service interruption must be within the period that the operator permits.
l It is recommended to restore the services to the previous system if the cutover cannot
be finished in the planned period due to unexpected reasons.
l The cutover cannot affect the network security and online services. Do not cut over
all NEs at one time.

Restoring Workflow
Restore the services to the previous system if the cutover fails. Figure 5-2 shows the

6.1 Card Replacement Precautions


Pay attention to the following while replacing a card:
l Do not look at the optical interface closely without any protection.
l Plug/unplug the card (partially seated) carefully and slowly. Make sure the card will
not hit the shelf or the next cards.
l One hand helps while the other hand is plugging/unplugging a card.
l Plug/unplug only one card at a time. Do not plug/unplug several cards at a time.
l Be careful not to damage the card if a tool is used to plug/unplug the card.
l Observe the ESD protection specifications. Handle the card carefully if the card is
placed outside the shelf. Place the card horizontally with the side which is easily
damaged upwards.
l Do not put the cards in the humid environment or expose them to the sun light. Make
sure the surroundings are free from any damage to the cards.
l Only move one card at a time with the protection of an antistatic bag. Do not stack
the cards and move them without any protection measurements.

6.2 Replacing Control and Switching Card


Overview
Replace the control and switching card when it fails to work or the hardware is to be
upgraded.

Precautions
Pay attention to the following while replacing the control and switching card:

l Make an antistatic preparation.


l Generally, only replace the faulty control and switching card. It is forbidden to replace
the control and switching card which is in running.

l Replace the control and switching card when there is a little traffic, such as the time
period from 00:00 am to 05:00 am.

l Align the card to the guide rail and carefully push it in along the rail to accurately
connect with the backplane.

Tools
The following tools are recommended for replacing a control and switching card:
l Antistatic wrist strap
l Screw driver
l Antistatic bag

Preparations
l Back up the current configuration data.
l Back up the system configuration file.
l Make sure that the new control and switching card and the old one are of the same
type.
l Record the cable positions, and check whether the labels on the cables are correct,
clear and tidy. If the labels are not easily recognized, make a new label to prevent any
mistakes when connecting cables.

Steps
To replace a control and switching card, perform the following steps:
1. Wear the antistatic wrist strap, as shown in Figure 6-1.

4. Grasp the extractor and pull the card out along the guide rail steadily and gently.
5. Put the card into an antistatic bag and label it with its name and fault.
6. Take a new card out of the antistatic bag, and check it. Make sure that the card is
intact.

Note:
You cannot touch the surface of the card.

7. Pull the extractor outward. Insert the card into the slot and push it in along the guide
rail gently.
8. Press the extractor inward till it is parallel with the panel.
9. Connect the cables to the new card.

Follow-up Process
The follow-up process includes the following:
l Observe the LED status of the new card. If the RUN LED is flashing green, the card
runs normally.
l Use the CLI command to show the card type and status. If the card is in INSERVICE
status, the card runs normally.
l Use the CLI command to show the card version. If the card version is not correct,
download the correct version.
l Save the configuration data.
l Restore the previous backup configuration data to the system.
l Query the system alarms, notifications and events. Confirm there are no exceptional
alarms, notifications and events.

6.3 Replacing Power Card


Overview
The power card is not hot-swappable. You must power off the power card before replacing
it.

Preparations
Pay attention to the following while replacing a power card:
l Make sure it is necessary to replace the power card.
l Make sure the backup card functions well.
l Make sure the card type and software version of the backup card are the same as
those of the faulty card.
l Prepare the anti-statistic bag, moisture-proof bag, cartons, and labels.

Steps
To replace a power card, perform the following steps:
1. Wear the antistatic wrist strap, as shown in Figure 6-2.

2. Power off the power card.


3. Pull the extractor outward to separate it from the backplane.
4. Grasp the extractor and pull the power card out along the guide rail steadily and gently.
Do not touch the apparatus and circuits.
5. Put the card into an antistatic bag and label it with the its name, version and fault.
6. Take a new power card out of the antistatic bag, and check it. Make sure that the card
is intact.
7. Pull the extractor outward. Insert the card in the slot and push it in along the guide rail
gently.
8. Press the extractor inward till it is parallel with the panel.
9. Power on the power card.

Follow-up Process
Observe the LED status of the power card. If it is not in normal status, check the card.

6.4 Replacing Other Cards


Overview
Replace a service card when it fails to work or the hardware is to be upgraded.

Precautions
Pay attention to the following while replacing a service card:
l The service carried on the card may be interrupted when a service card is replaced.

l Make an antistatic preparation.


l Replace the service card when there is a little traffic, such as the time period from
00:00 am to 06:00 am.
l Avoid the short circuit caused by metal objects, including misplace of tools or screws
dropped into the shelf.
l Align the card to the guide rail and carefully push it in along the rail. Make sure the
card is connect accurately connected with the backplane.
l Removing the service card which is loading program may cause the damage on the
service card program. Make sure that the service card is not loading program before
it is replaced.

Tools
The following tools are recommended for replacing a service card:
l Antistatic wrist strap
l Screw driver
l Antistatic bag

Preparations
l Check and record the card type, and make sure that the new card and the old one are
of the same type.
l Record the cable positions, and check whether the labels on the cables are correct,
clear and tidy. If the labels are not easily recognized, make a new label to prevent any
mistakes when connecting cables.

Steps
