4.2.2 NetNumen
Introduction
Designed hierarchically, the NetNumen is a highly customized, carrier-level and
cross-platform network management platform. NetNumen is highly scalable and supports
all multiple operating systems. It meets diversified requirements of users. For instance,
telecom operators and manufacturers can establish the NE and network management
system. The service provider can set up the network management and operation support
system. Enterprises and independent software vendors can establish management
solutions.
NetNumen manages various IP devices at backbone layer, convergence layer and access
layer. Presently, it is able to manage integrated access server, digital user loop and
Ethernet switch. NetNumen covers the four layers of TMN management layer including:
l NE layer
4-2
l NE management layer
l Network management layer
l Service management layer
NetNumen provides user-friendly interfaces and provides extended features like network
graphs, network monitoring and management of multiple devices.
Overall Structure
In general, NetNumen adopts three-layer system structure: Database server, NMS server
and Client.
Figure 4-3 shows the overall NetNumen system structure.
l NMS server
The NMS server is responsible for data communication with the management object,
database server and the client. It is also responsible for the processing of different
information. NMS components communicate with each other using TCP/IP protocol
suite. RMI, SNMP, CORBA, HTTP and other protocols used at higher layers also run
on TCP/IP.
l Database server
The database server stores NMS data of various NEs. The NMS server needs to
access the database to write/read data to/from database. The read and write request
of the Client to the database is forwarded and executed through the NMS Server.
l Client
The Client is an NMS terminal. The user can login remotely to the NMS and access
the NMS center via the Internet or the Intranet as a client to perform authorized NMS
operations.
4-3
Function
NetNumen has the following functions:
l Topology management
The topology management function includes the following:
à Topology display
The system combines a NE tree and a network topology view to show network
resources. It provides various management views to meet different requirements
of resource management.
à Topology management
à Alarm filtering
à Alarm box management
l Performance management
The performance management function includes the following:
4-4
The system collects performance data and store the data in the database
according to performance tasks.
à Performance data query
The system supports the query of performance data that has been collected and
stored in the database. It displays the query result on the client window.
à Performance threshold management
The system supports the setting of upper and lower thresholds for some key
performance indexes. Once the value of an index is higher than the upper
threshold or lower than the lower threshold, the system can raise a performance
threshold crossing alarm via the fault management module.
l Task management
The task management function includes the following:
à Data backup and deletion
Back up and delete the system data periodically, including log data, performance
data and alarm data.
à Policy management
Manage policy tasks of each NE periodically.
l System backup and restoration
The backup and restore function includes the following:
à Back up the entire database data
à Back up the basic data
à Back up files
à Backup and delete log data
à Backup and delete alarm data
à Backup and delete PM data
à Restore log data
à Restore alarm data
à Restore PM data
l System monitor
The system monitor function provides an operation platform for unified maintenance
and management on the NetNumen system.
The system monitor function includes the following:
à Monitor application server
t Specify the CPU, RAM and HD threshold values of the application server.
The monitoring module generates alarms if the threshold values are
exceeded.
4-5
t Specify the data collection granularity for the display of the server
performance.
à Monitor database server
t Specify the database HD usage threshold value, database used space
threshold value, and the monitoring period. When the system data exceeds
the specified threshold values, the server will generate alarms.
t Query the database information, table information, and processing
information.
l Role management
User roles are used to define the corresponding user rights which include the operation
rights and the resource rights.
The role management includes the following:
à Role management
t Create, modify, duplicate and delete roles within their rights.
t Create a new role and grant it certain operation rights.
t Modify the role properties.
t Duplicate a similar role is allowed by the role management.
t Delete some roles which are no longer needed
à Role set management
t Create, modify, duplicate and delete a role set, according to their
corresponding rights.
t Create a new role set and grant certain roles to the set.
t Modify the role set property.
t Duplicate a similar role set is allowed by the role management.
t Delete some role sets which are no longer needed.
l User management
The user management is a crucial part of the system security management.
à A system administrator can create, query, modify, delete and lock an user; he or
she can also grant rights to the created user, set working period for the use and
query the login log of the user.
à The newly created user can log in to the system by using its user name and the
password; The user can also conduct the corresponding management operations
within his or her rights.
l Log management
Log management is one of the important service management functions in NetNumen.
After the user successfully conducts the system operation once, the log server then
generates a log.
