DESIGN CALCULATION OF TEMPORARY WORKING PLATFORM FOR EXECUTION OF PILING WORKS

1. INTRODUCTION:
The bridge over the Backkhali river consists of 595.0 m PC box girder at Kusturi Ghat under
upazila sadar, District Cox’s Bazar. The bridge will be constructed under supervision of Local
Government Engineering Department.

2. SCOPE OF WORKS:
The scope of the works is limited to design a platform in the river from where installation of
permanent casing pipe and piling works will be done.

3. ASSAMPTION:
Two piers on the bridge need to be constructed directly in water. Therefore, a temporary
platform is to be constructed for the execution of the piling works specially driving of the casing
pipe and boring by drilling rig.

This operation shall be done from the top of temporary platform by a 100 ton crawler crane and
Soilmec SR60 or XCMG 220D. steel casing pipe shall be driven by vibro hammer.

4. CODES, STANDARD AND REFERENCES:

Following codes and standard has been adopted to design the member of the platform

- BNBC – 2014 (Bangladesh National Building Code)

- AISC 360-16 (American Institute of Steel Construction)

- Foundation analysis and design by Joseph E. Bowles

- Pile Foundation design by M. J. Tomlinson

- Catalog of 100 ton crawler crane of Kobelco

- Catalog of Piling rig SR60

5. ANALYSIS SOFWARE:
STAAD Pro 2006 SS6 has been used to analysis the beam, frame and the structures.

6. LOAD CALCULTION:
Dead Load

Dead loads are all the selfweight of the structural plate beams, girder, vertical steel pipes,
bracing angles.

EQUIPMENT LOAD:

Equipment loads are taken from the catalog of 100 tons kobleco crawler crane and soilmec
piling rig-SR60 as per manufacturer recommendation

EQUIPMENT LATERAL LOAD

Traction load has been taken as equipment lateral load. The maximum traction load between
the crane and piling rig has been considered in the design.

WIND LOAD:

Wind Load has been calculated according to BNBC -2014, Part-6, Chapter-2.

Location Cox’s Bazar

Basic wind speed = 80m/s
qz = 0.000613KzKztKdV2I
Kz = Velocity pressure coefficient = 0.85 for exposure Type B
Kzt = topographic factor = 1 for flat surface
Kd = wind directional factor = 0.85 for main wind frame structure
I = importance factor = 0.77

qz = 0.000613*0.85*1*0.85*0.77*(80)2 = 2.18 kN/m2

Soil & Structure MAHL LGED

Page 4 of 26
DESIGN CALCULATION OF TEMPORARY WORKING PLATFORM FOR EXECUTION OF PILING WORKS

Cp = (0.8+0.5) = 1.3
G = 0.85
So wind pressure, qz = qzGCp = 2.18*0.85*1.3 = 2.4 kN/m2

Approximate projected area calculation for wind

Projected area of platform = 1*18 = 18 m 2
Projected area of crane = 3.5*6+40*1.2*.3 = 75 m 2
Projected area of drilling ring = 3.5*6+20*1.2 = 75 m 2
Other projected area = 50 m2
Total projected area = 18+75+75+50 = 218 m 2
So total wind load acting on the structure = 2.4*218 = 523 kN

SEISMIC LOAD

Seismic load has been calculated according to BNBC -2014.

Seismic zone coefficient, Z = 0.28

The spectral acceleration for the design earthquake is given by the following equation:
2 ZI
S a= C
3 R S
Sa = Design spectral acceleration (in units of g), which shall not be less than 2/3*ZI*β
Z= Seismic zone coefficient = 0.28
I = Structural importance factor = 1.0
R = Response reduction factor = 6.0

So, Sa = (2/3)*(0.28*1/6)*Cs = 0.0311*Cs

Cs = typical shape of elastic response coefficient.
Building period, T = Ct*(hn)m
For steel moment resisting frame
Ct = 0.0724, m = 0.8
Say height of steel structure, hn = 10.0m above ground level.
T = 0.0724*(10)^0.8 = 0.46
For Soil Type = SC, S = 1.15, TB = 0.2; TC = 0.6; TD = 2.0 (Table – 2.5.4)
So TB < T < TC
Cs = 2.5*S*ƞ
Ƞ = damping correction factor = 1.0 for 5% damping.
So, Cs = 2.5*1.15*1 = 2.875
Therefore, Sa = 0.0311*Cs = 0.0311*2.875 = 0.09
Base shear force shall be calculated according to following formula-
V = SaW = 0.09W
W = seismic weight of the structure
= Dead weight of platform+ 50% of equipment load
= 130 ton +0.5*170 ton
= 2150 kN
So, base shear, V = 0.09*2150 = 193 kN

Soil & Structure MAHL LGED

Page 5 of 26
DESIGN CALCULATION OF TEMPORARY WORKING PLATFORM FOR EXECUTION OF PILING WORKS

CURRENT LOAD:

Velocity of water in river, v = 3.0m/s

So the pressure head, h = v2/(2g) = 0.46 m

Pressure on the steel pipe = hg = 0.46*1000*9.81 N/m2 = 4.51 kN/m2

So the load on steel pipe = 0.5*4.51 kN/m2 = 2.26 kN/m

a. Equipment Load:
Maximum ground pressure for SR60 piling rig = 350 kPa

Maximum ground pressure for 100 ton crawler crane = 107 kPa

So the beam design shall be furnished considering the load from the piling rig.

Beam spacing = 500mm = 0.50m

Load on beam = 0.5*350 = 175.0 kN/m

Dead load on the beam = weight of 10mm steel plate = 0.01*0.5*78.5 = 0.39 kN/m

Use Steel beam section F250x16-W400x10.

Self weight of the beam = 0.88 kN/m

Total load on the beam, w = 175+0.39+.88 = 176.27 kN/m = 180 kN/m (say)

Maximum Span of the beam = 3.75 m

So, design shear on the beam, V = 180*3.75/2 = 337.50 kN

Design moment on the beam, M = 180*(3.75) 2/8 = 316.40 kN-m

b. Check for Shear Capacity:

Maximum Shear force, V = 337.50 kN

Av = Ay = (350-16*2)*10 = 3180 mm2

Shear capacity of the section, Vcap = 0.4fyAv = 0.4*345*3180/1000 kN = 438 kN > V safe.

Maximum Bending Moment, M = 316.40 kN-m

Length of the beam, Lb = 3750 mm

Cb = 1.0

Mn = 592.30 kN-m

So Allowable Moment Capacity of the member, M allow = Mn/1.67 = 354.67 kN-m > M Safe.

MAIN BEAM LAYOUT PLAN

a. Load Calculation
The equipment foot print = 4.44m x 5.26 m

Maximum spacing of the platform support = 3.75m x 3.75m

So by any means no load will be induced more than one equipment at a time on the girder
beam.

Soil & Structure MAHL LGED

Page 11 of 26
DESIGN CALCULATION OF TEMPORARY WORKING PLATFORM FOR EXECUTION OF PILING WORKS

Maximum operating weight of the equipment = 107 ton (for hundred ton crawler crane)

Add 50 for vibration and others. So total load = 1.5*107 = 160.5 tons.

Equipment width = 4.44m and the maximum beam length = 3.75m. so maximum half of the
load may come on one girder beam.

So load on the girder beam = 160.5/2 =80.25 Tons = 803 kN

This load will act as moving load.

So maximum sheer force of the beam, Vll = 803 kN

Maximum bending moment, Mll = 803*3.75/4 = 752.82 kN-m

Self-weight of the steel beam = 1.62 kN/m

Dead load from sub beam = (0.39+0.88)*3.75/0.5 = 9.53 kN/m

Total dead load on the beam, wdl = 1.62+9.53 = 11.15 kN/m

Dead load shear, Vdl = wdlL/2 = 11.15*3.75/2 = 20.90 kN

Dead load moment, Mdl = wdlL2/8 = 11.15*3.75^2/8 = 19.60 kN-m

So total design shear, V = Vdl+Mll = 803+20.90 =823.90 kN

Total design Moment, M = Mdl + Mll = 19.60+752.82 = 772.42 kN-m

A. LOAD CALCULATION:
Total dead load on the top of the girder beam = 11.15 kN/m

Maximum length of the girder beam = 3.75m

So total dead load on steel pipe from girder = 11.15*3.75 = 41.82 kN

The equipment foot print = 4.44m x 5.26 m

Maximum spacing of the platform support / Steel pipe = 3.75m x 3.75m

So maximum equipment load on the steel pipe = 1.0 equipment load conservatively

= 107 ton

Say 107*1.5 = 160.5 ton during operation including vibration.

DESIGN CALCULATION OF TEMPORARY WORKING PLATFORM FOR EXECUTION OF PILING WORKS

E. SAFE LOAD BEARING CAPACITY OF THE PILE:

Geotechnical capactity of steel pipe is given below in chart-

Capacity has been calculated from the book of “Pile foundation design 5 th edition by
Tomlinson”.

From the above chart 15.0m embedment of the pipe in the soil will give the necessary
capacity.

It is noted that though 500mm dia pipe is structurally safe, considering geotechnical capacity
600mm dia may be chosen to achieve the safety of the structure.

8. CONCLUSION:
Platform sub beam, girder, bracing angle and steel pipe capacity have been checked against
all possible loads imposed on the structures and all members are safe enough to carry that
loads without failure. So the platform is safe for the execution of the piling works.
