Replacing right-hand side drive shaft

Special tools: 999 5488, 999 5633

Removing

Removing drive shaft nut

Remove:

Hub cap.
Drive shaft nut and washer.

Removing wheel and splash guards

Remove:

Right front wheel.

Splash guards (rear) under engine.
Splash guard in wheel arch.

Removing longitudinal member

Remove:

Heat deflector plate from bracket on engine.

Longitudinal member under engine.

Disconnecting drive shaft from transmission

Remove drive shaft from transmission enough to free the circlip from the differential drive. Use gimmy bar
999 5633.

NOTE! Ensure that the gimmy bar is ground down so that it goes free of the bracket. See arrow in

NOTE! Ensure that the gimmy bar is ground down so that it goes free of the bracket. See arrow in
illustration.

Disconnecting drive shaft from hub

HINT: If the drive shaft sticks in the hub, tap it with a copper or rubber mallet. If necessary, use a
universal puller. The drive shaft can be pressed in approx. 15 mm.

Remove:

Brake hose from spring strut mounting.

ABS cable from its mounting in the wheel arch and on the spring strut.
ABS sensor.
Stub axle from spring strut.

Turn wheel (steering left).

Angle the stab axle and remove the drive shaft from the hub and transmission.

CAUTION: Take care not to damage the seal in the hub.

Temporarily secure the stub axle to the spring strut with one of the screws.
Install plug 999 5488 in transmission.

CAUTION: Ensure that no dirt gets into the wheel hub bearing.

Installing

Installing drive shaft

Remove seal plugs.

Install drive shaft in transmission.

CAUTION: Take care not to damage the boot and sealing ring in the transmission. Press in drive shaft
properly. Check that the drive shaft is locked into place in the differential drive by pulling carefully in the
drive shaft constant velocity joint. Change oil seal if necessary.

Install:

Support member under engine (four screws). front edge, long screws Rear edge, short screws.
Tightening torque: 69 Nm Longitudinal member-engine, two screws with new lock nuts. Tighten
the rear nut first, then the front. Tightening torque: 52 Nm.
Heat deflector plate (three screws).

Installing drive shaft, stub axle, brake hose and ABS sensor

Align drive shaft with hub.

Install:

Screws on stub axle with new lock nuts.

Tightening torque: 90 Nm.

Brake hose with retaining clip on spring strut.

ABS sensor.
ABS line on spring strut and wheel arch.

Install a new washer and a new lock nut.

Tighten nut lightly.

Installing splash guards and wheel

Install:

Splash guard in wheel arch.

Splash guards under transmission/engine.
Wheel. See Installing wheels.

Tightening drive shaft nut

Lower the car

Set the parking brake
Move gear selector to P
Tighten drive shaft nut

Tightening torque: 240 Nm.

Install hub cover
