Five Excuses That You Need To Stop

Making To Avoid Job Search

We all dislike job hunting and there are plenty of reasons to do so. We don’t like the idea of being
tested, toyed by total strangers, knowing all well that they have the power to make or break our career
choices. We don’t like being put in uncomfortable situations like these often and that tendency of not
taking risks keeps us from changing jobs even when we feel stifled and unproductive in our current
role. People around us realise this folly of ours and motivate us to find something better, and to which
our response is in the form a lame excuse, which we give without any conviction. What are those
excuses that we often give to ourselves and others to avoid job search?

There are not many ‘good’ jobs in my industry

The most common excuse that you can give to someone and pull it off easily is to lament about the
slow economy, and bad state of your industry. We all like blaming someone or something else for our
own carelessness. Most of the time we do not even know the current affairs of our industry because
we don’t care to, until its too late. When faced with the proposition of job change we are caught
unawares and that’s how we fall back on this excuse to make a fool out of yourself and others. The
truth is, for the right person, there is always a right job. If you have the right skills, the confidence and
the attitude, even in the slowest of economies there will be a job for you. The remedy is to simply
keep yourself abreast with the current trends of the industry, and keep looking.

I have not updated my skills

People are often caught so bad in the web of their daily work-life routine that they forget to pay
attention to their surroundings. Had they been paying attention, they would have realised the fast
pace at which the world is moving ahead and how people around are leaving them behind in this race.
Employment is like a marathon race where you need to keep moving, slowly and steadily to reach to
the finishing line. There is always one who wins the marathon, but even those who complete this
marathon are considered winners in their own rights. Only those who stop midway are the ones who
don’t get any recognition or incentive. So, if you have stopped updating your skills, no else is to blame.
If you want to reach to the finishing line, you must keep updating your skill set.

I can’t relocate

Getting too cosy with the city where you are employed works against you sometimes. Relocation for
a job is certainly a big task and not all are up for it. However, sometimes, you can miss an exciting
opportunity if you cannot relocate to a new place as that is the only precondition to get that job. There
are occasions when you get so much comfortable with a place that despite knowing that other cities
have better job opportunities, you won’t dare think about moving to those places, even if they offer
a better standard of living or more lifestyle options.

I don’t have the time

The worst excuse of all that you can give to anyone is the lack of time. You think you have so much in
plate that you cannot spare time for your betterment. You will spend weekends playing pool, you can
spend one hour daily in the gym, two hours at work gossiping about the latest cars, or carping about
your manager, but you can’t spare time to find yourself a worthy job. While all these things might be
necessary for your emotional and mental wellbeing they are certainly not more important than your
career development. May be those who make this excuse deserve to remain in their miserable job.

I have not updated my resume in long time

CV is the mirror of your personality in professional terms. It is what you are and what the employer
sees in you as a prospective hire. Not updating your CV is a mistake on your part where it becomes
clear that you are not serious about your career and professional development. An outdated resume
shows a lack of enthusiasm and willingness to change or to take new initiatives which can prove
detrimental in your professional growth. Therefore, even if you are not looking for a change, you
should update your resume with new experience and skills at regular intervals. It will greatly enhance
your prospects of landing a new job.
