3.1.6 Settings for underexcitation (loss of field) protection – (40G-A)

For stator circuit criterion the reciprocal of the impedance (equal the admittance) is calculated from
the positive sequence systems of currents and voltages. In the admittance plane the stability limit of
machine is independent of the voltage. The shape of the underexcitation trip characteristic is like the
underexcitation limiting curve of the generator capability curve.

a) Stator circuit criteria

The rated machine data must refer to secondary values to enable setting. Furthermore it must be
noted, that rated current and rated voltage of the machine in general are not equal to the rated data
of the instrument transformers.
According 7UM62 manual, matching is performed according to the following formula:
1 1 UNsec INmach TRU
= ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ = 0.503
xdsec xdmach INsec UNmach TRI

whereby
xdsec secondary per unit synchronous reactance
xdmach per unit synchronous reactance of machine
Unsec secondary rated voltage (CT and unit)
Insec secondary rated current (CT and unit)
INMach rated machine current
UNmach rated machine voltage
TRU transformation ratio of voltage transformers
TRI transformation ratio of current transformers

As a proposal in case when no exact data are available the settings below may be used
− The parameter 1/xdsec 1 is set to 1.1 times the formula value (safety factor), with an angle of
80 degree.
− The parameter 1/xdsec 2 is set to 90 % of λ1, with an angle of 90 degree.

page 10 of 42
上海威能电力科技有限公司
− The parameter 1/xdsec 3 is set to 1.1 with an angle of 110 degree.
b) Rotor criteria

Instead of the excitation voltage acquisition, the signal of an AVR system failure has fed in via a
binary input.

The settings can be chosen directly by using the POWER CHART

3.1.9 Settings for forward power protection – (32F-A)

The criterion in this function is that the "forwards" power supplied into the network falls below a
certain value. Depending on the application either slow high-precision measurement (averaging 16
cycles) or high-speed measurement (without averaging) may be selected. High-speed measurement
is particularly suitable for network decoupling.

The forward power is set to the nominal active power of unit auxiliary transformer. The machine
output must therefore be referred to secondary values:

3.1.11 Settings for generator impedance protection – (21G-A)

The reactance X determines the reach of its associated zone.

The zone Z1 is therefore set to approximately 70% of the protected range, i.e. 0.7 times the
transformer impedance. The impedance protection operates instantaneously or with only a small
delay T1 for short-circuits within this zone.
The zone Z2 reach could be set slightly above the transformer reactance.

Primary impedance:
k R uR U2N
Zprim = ⋅ ⋅
100 100 SN.Tfr

page 14 of 42
上海威能电力科技有限公司
where kR zone reach of zone Z. in %
uK percent impedance voltage of the Main transformer
SN,Tfr rated apparent power of the Main transformer
UN rated voltage of the Main transformer (Generator side)

Calculation:
Main transformer: uk = 14.5 %
SN,Tfr = 370 MVA
UN = 20 kV
Z1sec = (70%/100%) x (14.5%/100%) x (202 kV2/ 370MVA) x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A) = 1.81 Ω
Æ address 3306

Zone Z1B is only active in case of open Gen. C.B.! Zone Z1B will be activated by C.B. aux. contact
via binary input. The zone reach should be: 100% transformer reactance+ the reactance from
transformer to Gen. C.B. Example: 120% transformer reactance
Z1Bsec = (100%/100%) x (14.5%/100%) x (202 kV2 / 370MVA) x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A) = 2.59Ω
Æ address 3308

Similarly to Z1, zone reach of the second stage Z2 can be determined from e.g. 100% transformer
reactance. If zone 2 was activated, the settings of the distance protection at the grid side would have
to be considered.
Z2sec = (120%/100%) x (14.5%/100%) x (202 kV2 / 370MVA) x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A) = 3.10Ω
Æ address 3310

The power swing block is mostly used for impedance stage1 because the delay time T1 for this
stage is set low.
A compromise has to be found for the distance between power swing polygon and the trip polygon
(P/SPOL-TPOL address 3314) and for the rate of changing of the impedance vector (dZ/dt address
3315):
In 7UM62 Manual, the default setting for dZ/dt is 60Ω/s (In=5A) which is adequate for most
applications. This is also the basis for the minimum distance P/PSOL-TPOL assuming that for
detection of a power swing there must be one impedance value between P/PSOL-TPOL.
Setting condition: P/PSOL-TPOL > dZ/dt x Δ t.

3.1.12 Settings for out of step protection – (78G-A)

The measured impedance’s during power swing condition are decisive for the settings.
Xd’ can be calculated from the per unit reactance xd’ as follows:

UN.Gen
X′ds = ⋅ xds′ Calculation with generator data:
3 ⋅ IN.Gen
where:
Xds’ transient reactance of the machine
xds’ transient per unit reactance xds’ = 20.2 %
UN,Gen rated machine voltage UN = 20 kV
IN,Gen rated machine current IN = 10189 A
Thus, the primary transient reactance:
Zb ≈ X’ds = [20000V / (√3 x 10189A)] ⋅ 0.2 = 0.227Ω
Zbsec=0.227 x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A)=3.75Ω Æ address 3505

The primary reactance of the main transformer is :

uK [%] ⋅ UN2
XK =
100[%] ⋅ SN
Main transformer data:
uK = 14.5 % , UN = 20 kV , INTR = 10.69 kA , SNTR = 370 MVA(?)
Thus, the primary reactance of the Main transformer: Xk = 0.157 Ω(?)

Assuming that characteristic 1 should cover 80 % of the transformer reactance,

the setting of Zc results in:
ZC ≈ 80 %·0.157 Ω ≈ 0.124 Ω
Zcsec=0.124 x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A)=2.04Ω Æ address 3506
The width Za of the polygon is determined by the total impedance Ztot.. Assuming the power swing
angle between generator and transformer, Ztot is the sum of Zb and Zc.. Ztot ≈ 0.353 Ω;
Za ≈ 0.289 *Ztot = 0.102 Ω
Zasec=0.102 x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A)=1.68Ω Æ address 3504

Assuming that the remaining transformer reactance and the covered system reactance should be
0.312 Ω (primary), the setting of 3507 results in:

Zd-ZC = 0.188 Ω
Zdsec-Zcsec=0.188 x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A)=3.10Ω Æ address 3507
The holding time (address 3511) determines how long time a detected out-of-step condition (passing
through) is maintained so that the counter is incremented with the next passing through. This time
should be set higher than the longest expected slip period (i.e. the smallest slip frequency).
Conventional values lie between 20s and 30s.

3.1.13 Settings for generator (thermal) overload protection – (49G-A)

The maximum continuously permissible stator over-current is decisive for the thermal replica. For
larger machines and in cases of doubt, the data supplied by the manufacturer should prevail.

page 20 of 42
上海威能电力科技有限公司
In F11 7UM 622, four high-accuracy frequency stages are available. Each stage can be set as over-
frequency stage or under-frequency stage. This is determined by the rated frequency as configured
under address 270 and the set limit value. When the limit value is set smaller than the rated
frequency, the stage operates as under-frequency stage. When the limit value is set equal to the
rated frequency, the concerned stage is ineffective.

The frequency protection function is acting as back up protection to the turbine speed monitoring
protection. As a matter of principle, the setting values for frequency and delay times depend on the
values supplied by the turbine manufacturer.

In this project, this function has 2 stages of under-frequency and 2 stages of over-frequency:
In F11 7UM622 relay,
81U-1: stage-1, f<48.5Hz, t=10.0s ⇒ Alarm
81U-2: stage-2, f<47.0Hz, t=10.0s ⇒ Disconnection from the network (CLASS-C)

4.1.5 Settings for underexcitation (loss of field) protection – (40G-B)

For stator circuit criterion the reciprocal of the impedance (equal the admittance) is calculated from
the positive sequence systems of currents and voltages. In the admittance plane the stability limit of
machine is independent of the voltage. The shape of the underexcitation trip characteristic is like the
underexcitation limiting curve of the generator capability curve.

a) Stator circuit criteria

The rated machine data must refer to secondary values to enable setting. Furthermore it must be
noted, that rated current and rated voltage of the machine in general are not equal to the rated data
of the instrument transformers.
According 7UM62 manual, matching is performed according to the following formula:
1 1 UNsec INmach TRU
= ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ = 0.503
xdsec xdmach INsec UNmach TRI

whereby
xdsec secondary per unit synchronous reactance
xdmach per unit synchronous reactance of machine
Unsec secondary rated voltage (CT and unit)
Insec secondary rated current (CT and unit)
INMach rated machine current
UNmach rated machine voltage
TRU transformation ratio of voltage transformers
TRI transformation ratio of current transformers

As a proposal in case when no exact data are available the settings below may be used
− The parameter 1/xdsec 1 is set to 1.1 times the formula value (safety factor), with an angle of
80 degree.
− The parameter 1/xdsec 2 is set to 90 % of λ1, with an angle of 90 degree.

The criterion in this function is that the "forwards" power supplied into the network falls below a
certain value. Depending on the application either slow high-precision measurement (averaging 16
cycles) or high-speed measurement (without averaging) may be selected. High-speed measurement
is particularly suitable for network decoupling.

The forward power is set to the nominal active power of unit auxiliary transformer. The machine
output must therefore be referred to secondary values:

4.1.10 Settings for generator impedance protection – (21G-B)

The reactance X determines the reach of its associated zone.

The zone Z1 is therefore set to approximately 70% of the protected range, i.e. 0.7 times the
transformer impedance. The impedance protection operates instantaneously or with only a small
delay T1 for short-circuits within this zone.
The zone Z2 reach could be set slightly above the transformer reactance.

Primary impedance:
k R uR U2N
Zprim = ⋅ ⋅
100 100 SN.Tfr
where kR zone reach of zone Z. in %
uK percent impedance voltage of the Main transformer
SN,Tfr rated apparent power of the Main transformer
UN rated voltage of the Main transformer (Generator side)

Calculation:
Main transformer: uk = 14.5 %
SN,Tfr = 370 MVA
UN = 20 kV
Z1sec = (70%/100%) x (14.5%/100%) x (202 kV2/ 370MVA) x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A) = 1.81 Ω
Æ address 3306

page 32 of 42
上海威能电力科技有限公司
Zone Z1B is only active in case of open Gen. C.B.! Zone Z1B will be activated by C.B. aux. contact
via binary input. The zone reach should be: 100% transformer reactance+ the reactance from
transformer to Gen. C.B. Example: 120% transformer reactance
Z1Bsec = (100%/100%) x (14.5%/100%) x (202 kV2 / 370MVA) x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A) = 2.59Ω
Æ address 3308

Similarly to Z1, zone reach of the second stage Z2 can be determined from e.g. 100% transformer
reactance. If zone 2 was activated, the settings of the distance protection at the grid side would have
to be considered.
Z2sec = (120%/100%) x (14.5%/100%) x (202 kV2 / 370MVA) x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A) = 3.10Ω

4.1.11 Settings for out of step protection – (78G-B)

Zbsec=0.227 x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A)=3.75Ω Æ address 3505

The primary reactance of the main transformer is :

uK [%] ⋅ UN2
XK =
100[%] ⋅ SN
Main transformer data:
uK = 14.5 % , UN = 20 kV , INTR = 10.69 kA , SNTR = 370 MVA(?)

Zcsec=0.124 x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A)=2.04Ω Æ address 3506
The width Za of the polygon is determined by the total impedance Ztot.. Assuming the power swing
angle between generator and transformer, Ztot is the sum of Zb and Zc.. Ztot ≈ 0.353 Ω;
Za ≈ 0.289 *Ztot = 0.102 Ω
Zasec=0.102 x (110V/20kV) x (15000A/5A)=1.68Ω Æ address 3504

4.1.17 Settings for frequency protection– (81-B)
