4. Abstraction
Today we are going to learn about mental health and
mental illness. Just like being physically ill, persons with
mental illness have symptoms, can seek help, may take
medicine, and can recover.

Before we start the discussion about the different

mental illnesses, let me first ask you about your own Mental illness is a condition that
understanding about mental illness. So what is mental focuses on the changes in the
illness? mind of an individual.

According to Donatelle, 2006, “mental illnesses are

disorders that disrupt thinking, feelings, moods, and
behaviors and impair daily functioning”.

These disorders may be caused by prolonged stress,

mental and emotional suffering due to various triggers.

Triggers are events, conditions, or situations that may

“activate” a person’s tendency to experience symptoms
of mental disorders.

Mental Illnesses
A. Major Depressive Disorder
It is characterized by “persistent sadness,
despair, and hopelessness” (Donatelle, 2006)

Symptoms of Depression
 Lack or loss of motivation
 Over thinking (that others may say something
bad about him/her)
 Lack or loss of energy
 Slow to react
 Difficulty in concentrating and remembering
 Loss of appetite
 Excessive gain/ loss of weight
 Withdrawal from others/ feeling alone

B. Bipolar disorder
Also called manic-depressive disorder, it is a “form of
depression characterized by alternating mania and
depression” (Donatelle, 2006)

A person who experiences this disorder may at times feel

very happy and elated, then at an instant may feel
utmost sadness and despair.

Symptoms
 Rapid speech and racing thoughts
 Difficulty in decision-making
 Recklessness and impulsiveness
 Agitation
 Difficulty in concentrating
 Extreme irritability

C. Schizophrenia
This is a “mental illness with biological origins that is
characterized by irrational behavior , severe alterations
of the senses and inability to function in the society”
(Donatelle, 2006)

A person with this disorder may experience

hallucinations or feeling of being detached and away
from reality.
He/ She may lose the functions of the sense organs and
thinks and imagines things differently than of a normal
person.

D. Post-traumatic Disorder
A person may have this disorder when he/ she
experienced a traumatic situation such as being abuse,
raped, or involved in an accident.
Symptoms may vary from being spaced out (tulala),
extreme sadness or frustrations, irritability, avoidance to
people or isolation, and others.

*It is important to remember that mental disorders are

diagnosed. Only professional physicians may determine
the illness being experienced by an individual.
Furthermore, it is also needed to note that the symptoms
of the disorders should be prolonged and repeated. Not
because a person experiences one or two of the
symptoms at one time, it does not mean that he/ she is
already diagnosed with that illness.

5. Application

The teacher will ask the students to apply their

knowledge on mental illness in answering the questions (the students will answer the
below: questions on their notebook)
 What would you do if you found out your friend
had been diagnosed with a mental illness?
 What would you do if you witnessed someone at
school making fun of a person with mental
illness?
 What can you do to avoid these illnesses?
Yes sir.

Are you done?

(The teacher will then ask some students to read their

answers to the class.)

(He will also give feedback on their answers.)
