Rule Manager
Overview
SmartPlant Electrical Rule Manager is an environment used for creating, manipulating and
managing sets of consistency rules that apply whenever a user associates two items or modifies
properties of a certain item tag in SmartPlant Electrical. These rules determine how items act
and interact within a project. Usually, you create a set of rules at the beginning of a
project. You can modify any rule at any stage of the project life-cycle when project
requirements dictate a change.
A rule is a combination of various consistency criteria that you can specify for rule
components. A rule component can be either an item type or a filter created in Filter
Manager. The following types of rules are available:
Relation rules - rules in which consistency criteria apply to two specific components. These
rules ensure that correct relationships are created when you create a new relationship or
modify properties or values of related items in SmartPlant Electrical. The items can belong
to a specific item type or be specified by using a filter. When a rule matches both items, the
rule is implemented, and the software performs the actions associated with the rule.
Single component rules - rules in which consistency criteria apply to one component
only. These rules validate consistency of the properties or property values of a specific item
tag.
Rules are used in SmartPlant Electrical for the following reasons:
To ensure that consistent relationships are created between items when you create a new
item relationship.
To ensure that consistent relationships are created when you modify item properties for
related items.
To check the consistency of item properties or property values.
To copy property values from one item to another, allowing the propagation of data from one
item to its related/connected item.
In SmartPlant Electrical, when a rule matches the properties or property values specified for a
particular rule component, the rule is implemented. When a rule inconsistency is found, the
software performs the action associated with a specific consistency setting. Depending on the
associated action, the software records an inconsistency in a log file, warns the user about the
inconsistency, or rejects the inconsistency automatically.
On detecting a rule inconsistency the software, depending on the severity of the inconsistency,
rejects the inconsistency and does not allow you to proceed until the inconsistency is fixed, or
displays a message that allows the user to either accept or reject the inconsistency. Prior to
taking any action, the user can always display the rule properties. By accepting an
inconsistency, the user overrides the rule. By rejecting the inconsistency, the user takes into
account the rule consistency criteria and needs to make the appropriate corrections to the data.
You can generate and print a Rules Summary Report. This report displays a detailed listing of
all your current rules.
Before you can work with a rule base in Rule Manager, you need to connect to a specific plant
available in your plant structure. Also, if you have appropriate access rights, you can connect to
a plant located on a different site server.
Rule manager does not validate that the two properties in the consistency rule are of the
same data type. Attention should be paid to the property data types so that you do not
create a rule that might lead to the wrong results. For example, a rule that copies a length
property into a power property.
You can enable or disable the use of SmartPlant Electrical rules in Options Manager.
Note that relation rules are not applied for electrical items that are connected in parallel.
If a user performs a batch operation, in case of a rule inconsistency, the software response
depends on the setting defined in Options Manager, and on the action associated with the
violated logical expression. For details of action descriptions, see the Consistency Tab
(Rule Properties dialog box) (on page 31).
Connect to a Plant
1. Click File > Open Plant Structure.
2. On the Open Plant Structure dialog box, do one of the following:
Under Available plant structures, select a plant to connect.
If you want to connect to a plant in a different database, click Site Server and from the
Files of type list, select the appropriate .ini file.
Create a Folder
This procedure allows you to create a new folder for grouping together rules. For more
information, see Create a Folder (on page 11).
Rename a Folder

Delete a Rule
This procedure allows you to delete a rule permanently from your rule base. For more
information, see Delete a Rule (on page 13).
Create a Folder
1. Select a folder to locate your new folder in.
If the folder contains a rule, the new folder is added as a sibling to the rule — that is, on
the same level as the rule in the selected folder.
2. Do one of the following:
Click File > New Folder.
Delete a Folder
1. Select the folder that you want to delete.
2. Do one of the following:
Click Edit > Delete.
Rename a Folder
1. Select the folder that you want to rename.
2. Do one of the following:
Click Edit > Rename.
On the shortcut menu, click Rename.
3. Type a unique name for the folder over the existing folder name.
Rename a Rule
1. Select the rule that you want to rename.
2. Do one of the following:
Click Edit > Rename.
On the shortcut menu, click Rename.
3. Type a unique name for the rule over the existing rule name.
Cut a Rule
1. Select the rule that you want to place on the Clipboard.
2. Do one of the following:
Click Edit > Cut.
Copy a Rule
1. Select the rule that you want to copy to the Clipboard.
2. Do one of the following:
Click Edit > Copy.
Paste a Rule
Select a rule or a folder for pasting the rule.
If you select a folder, the software inserts the rule in that folder. If you select a rule, the
software inserts the rule as a sibling — that is, on the same level as the selected rule. You
can insert a rule into any folder.
Prior to pasting a rule, you must previously move a copy of a rule to the Clipboard by using
either the Cut or Copy command. The name of the rule that you paste from the Clipboard
appears with the Copy of prefix.
1. Do one of the following:
Click Edit > Paste.
Delete a Rule
1. Select the rule that you want to delete.
2. Do one of the following:
Click Edit > Delete.
Rule Properties
In the course of your design work, you can define properties for a new rule or modify properties
of existing rules. You can do something as simple as add a description to a rule or something
as complicated as authoring an entirely new rule with multiple consistency criteria to govern a
special relationship between two very specific items in SmartPlant Electrical. You can create or
modify rules at any stage of the project life-cycle when project requirements dictate a change.
Disable a Rule
This procedure allows you to disable a specific rule. For more information, see Disable a Rule
(on page 20).
11. Under Operator, select a desired operator. When using a copy operand the only operator
available is equals and must be selected.
For more information about operator descriptions, see Operator Descriptions and Rule
Examples (on page 21).
12. Under Operand 2, do one of the following:
Select the same rule or the second rule component (item type or filter) to create a rule
between two properties.
Select Value to create a logical expression using a value of a specific property selected
for the rule component selected under Operand 1.
13. Under Property/Value, do one of the following:
If the Operand 2 is the second rule component, select a property for the second rule
component to create a relationship between the properties of the rule components.
If the Operand 2 is the same rule component, select another property to create a
relationship between the properties in operand 1 and operand 2.
If the Operand 2 is the Value setting, depending on the logical operator that you
selected, enter one or more values.
14. Under Action, associate an action with the created logical expression by selecting one of
the following options:
Log — Records the rule inconsistency to a log file without notifying the user. The user can
access the log file from SmartPlant Electrical.
Warn — Prompts the user to reject or accept the operation when a rule inconsistency is
found. This action gives the user flexibility in making an appropriate decision.
Reject — Rejects user operation automatically and notifies the user about the rule
inconsistency. This action enables you to prevent the user from accepting the operation
when the software detects an inconsistency. When using the copy operation a reject action
will not allow any changes that might result in an inconsistency and no warning message is
displayed.
1. Repeat steps 8 through 13 to create another logical expression for the rule consistency.
14. Under Action, associate an action with the created logical expression by selecting one of
the following options:
Log — Records the rule inconsistency to a log file without notifying the user. The user
can access the log file from SmartPlant Electrical.
Warn — Prompts the user to reject or accept the operation when a rule inconsistency is
found. This action gives the user flexibility in making an appropriate decision.
Reject — Rejects user operation automatically and notifies the user about the rule
inconsistency. This action enables you to prevent the user from accepting the
operation when the software detects an inconsistency. When using the copy operation
a reject action will not allow any changes that might result in an inconsistency and no
warning message is displayed.
15. Repeat steps 8 through 13 to create another logical expression for the rule consistency.
Disable a Rule
1. In the tree view, select a desired rule.
2. Do one of the following:
Click Edit > Properties.
5. Click Save on the main toolbar to write the changes to the rule base.
After you disable the rule, is the user violates the rule consistency criteria in SmartPlant
Electrical, the software does not apply any actions that you specified for the logical expressions.
> greater than (Cable) Insulation rated voltage > (Motor) Rated

properties in a conjunction (Cable) Estimated length Is not Empty
with another rule Comment: if you do use the Is Not Empty operator in
consistency this rule, the software treats the expression as true
even if the values for the (Cable) Design length and
(Cable) Estimated length properties are not defined at
all.
<= Copy item 2 to item 1 Copies the Property value of Operand 2 to Operand
1 overwriting existing data
>= Copy item 1 to item 2 Copies the Property value of Operand 1 to Operand
2 overwriting existing data
< Copy item 2 to item 1 Copies the Property value of Operand 2 to Operand
if null 1 only if the Property value of Operand 1 is Null. If
data already exists in Operand 1 the copy function
cannot be used as no overwriting of existing data is
allowed.
Rule manager does not validate that the two properties in the consistency rule are of the
same data type. Attention should be paid to the property data types so that you do not create a
rule that might lead to the wrong results. For example, a rule that copies a length property into
a power property.
Menu Commands
Inserts a new folder below the active folder or as a sibling of the currently selected rule (that is,
in the same folder where the selected rule appears). If you select an open folder, the software
creates the new folder inside the selected folder.
The software assigns a default name of New Folder n to the new folder. The letter n represents
the next unused, sequential number. For example, if the last folder that you added was 15, after
you click the New Folder command, the software creates a new folder with the name New
Folder 16.
Opens the Rule Properties dialog box, where you can create a new rule. In the dialog box, you
can either create a rule name or proceed with defining rule properties. If you only create a rule
name and close the dialog box, in the tree view of the main Rule Manager window, the software
inserts the rule name below the active folder. If you select another rule and use the New Rule
command, the software creates the new rule in the same folder to which the selected rule
belongs.
In the Rule Properties dialog box, the software assigns a default name of New Rule 1 to the
new rule. If this name already exists, you must rename the rule manually to ensure rule name
uniqueness.
Writes any changes that you made in Rule Manager and saves the rules that you created or
modified to the .rul file.
Removes the selected rule from the tree view and copies the information to the Clipboard.
Copies to the Clipboard the name a rule or part of a rule name that you select in the tree view of
the selected in the SmartPlant Electrical Rule Manager window.
Inserts the contents of the Clipboard into the rule list under the active folder. If a rule is currently
selected, the software inserts the contents of the Clipboard as a sibling of the selected rule (that
is, in the same folder where the selected rule appears).
Removes the active rule or folder. If you delete a folder, the software also removes all child
folders and rules.
Component 1
Enables you to specify the first rule component and set or change the rule type.
Filter or item type — Displays the first rule component. Click Browse to select a component.
Browse — Opens the Select Rule Component dialog box (on page 33), where you can select
the first rule component for a relation rule, or a single component if you create a single
component rule. A rule component can be an item type or a specific filter that applies to an item
type.
Single component — Enables you to set or change the rule type. When selecting this check
box, you create a single component rule for the component specified in the Filter or item Type
box under Component 1. A single component rules enables you to evaluate and validate
consistency of the properties or property values of a specific item tag.
If you already created a relation rule and used the second rule component in logical
expressions on the Consistency tab, when you clear the check box, the software prompts you
to delete all logical expressions in which the second component is used.
Apply to reference data only — Allows you to create rules that only involve reference
data. Rules that apply to reference data are single component rules. In SmartPlant Electrical,
these rules validate consistency of the properties or property values of a specific item tag in the
Reference Data Explorer. When you select this check box, the software automatically selects
the Single component check box. Also, when you click Browse, in the dialog box that opens,
all of the displayed item types belong to reference data.
If you clear the check box, you can create rules that only involve project data.
Component 2
Available only when the rule type is a relation rule. Enables you to specify a second rule
component, which you can then use as an operand when defining logical relations in the
Consistency tab.
Filter or item type — Displays the second rule component. Click Browse to select a desired
component.
Browse — Opens the Select Rule Component dialog box (on page 33), where you can select
the second rule component for a relation rule. A rule component can be an item type or a
specific filter that applies to an item type.
The order of the rule components is not important. Relation rules are be bi-
directional. If your rule components are different, and in the Consistency tab you create a
logical expression using both components as operands, the rule applies to any of the
components involved in user operations in SmartPlant Electrical.
Consistency criteria
Enables you to define consistency criteria by creating one or more logical expressions and
associating an action with specific expressions. A logical expression is a relationship created
between two operands by means of a logical operator. An operand can be a rule component
that you specified on the in the Rule Components tab, or you can use the Value operand to
create a logical expression using a value of a specific property selected for a rule component.
A logical expression consists of the left and right parts separated by an operator:
Left part — Must always contain Operand 1 and its property, where Operand 1 represents a
rule component.
Right part — Can contain either a rule component as an Operand 2 and its property or the
Value operand and a value specified for the property of Operand 1.
Operand 1 — Enables you to select a rule component specified in the Rule Components
tab. If the rule type is single component, the cell displays the rule component specified on the
Rule Components tab under Component 1.
Copy — Enables you to copy, in the event of an inconsistency, a property value from one
operand to the other. For example, rated power might be set at 240V in the properties of one
operand and be null in the other. Using the correct copy function automatically copies the rated
power to the operand that was null, thus removing the inconsistency. This function only
operates if the Operator is set to = (equals). Note if the original values were not consistent
before the rule was applied then the copy function will not be implemented. For more
information on the Copy function operators, see Consistency Rules ” Copy Function Operator
Descriptions (see "Consistency Rules — Copy Function Operator Descriptions" on page 22).
Property — Lists appropriate properties for the rule component that you select from the
Operand 1 list. You can either select a property from the list, or start typing a desired
property. The software displays the property as you type.
Operator — Enables you to select an operator for the logical relation. For details about
operator descriptions, see Operator Descriptions and Rule Examples (on page 21).
Operand 2 — Enables you to select a rule component specified in the Rule Components tab,
or select the Value operand of a property selected in the Property column. If you select a rule
component, you create a relationship between properties of rule components. If you select the
Value operand, you create a relationship between a rule component property and the property
value.
Property/Value — Depending on the selection in the Operand 2 column, lists properties or
values. If in the Operand 2 column you selected a rule component, you can select a property of
a specific item type or filter. If in the Operand 2 column you selected the Value operand, you
can select or type a value for the property defined in the Property column. Depending on the
operator, a value can be free text, a number of units of measure separated by commas or semi
colons, or a value selected from the list.
When you type a unit of measure, the software converts the value automatically to the
default units of measure defined in SmartPlant Electrical.
Action — Displays a list from which you can select an action for the software to perform in case
of inconsistency. In SmartPlant Electrical, the software applies an action only when the
software detects a rule inconsistency (that is, whenever a user violates the logical expression
with which you associate the action). For all actions, the software records rule inconsistency
details into a log file which you can generate in SmartPlant Electrical.
The actions are:
Log — Records the rule inconsistency to the log file without notifying the user.
Warn — Prompts the user to reject or accept the operation when a rule inconsistency is
found. This action gives the user flexibility in making an appropriate decision. When a user
performs a batch operation, the software behavior depends on the Consistency Rule for
Batch Operation setting defined in the General Settings window of Options Manager. If
the setting is Continue current operation, in case of a rule inconsistency, the software
accepts the inconsistency and completes the batch operation without displaying any
messages. If the setting is Cancel current operation, in case of a rule inconsistency, the
software cancels the inconsistent operation and then continues the batch operation
automatically without displaying any messages.
Reject — Rejects user operation automatically and notifies the user about the rule
inconsistency. This action prevents the user from accepting the operation when the
software detects an inconsistency, forcing the user to take the necessary actions to fix the
inconsistency before being able to continue.
Delete — Deletes a selected logical expression together with the associated action.
You can select a row by clicking the row tab at the far left side. An arrow symbol beside
a row indicates the currently selected row.
Shortcut menu — Enables you to access Filter Manager. This menu is available only when
the rule component is a filter.
You can access Filter Manager to create new filters or modify properties of the existing
filters only if you have appropriate access rights.
You cannot create new item types or modify properties of the existing item types.
You cannot set rules for item types with reference data (these item types are not available in
the Selection list).
Tree view
Allows you to create, delete, or modify rules or folders using the toolbar icons, the Edit or File
menu commands, or commands available on the shortcut menu. You can create any number of
folders or rules in the tree view.
Plant Rules - Enables you to add folders or rules you want to define. The folder contains the
default folders Relation Rules and Single Component Rules.
Relation Rules - Enables you to add folders or rules you want to define as relation rules. Also,
you can rename the folder as you require and add single component rules as well.
Single Component Rules - Enables you to add folders or rules you want to define as single
component rules. Also, you can rename the folder as you require and add relation rules as well.
Displays the online Help for Rule Manager, which includes topics about commands, dialog
boxes, tasks, and workflow scenarios.
