III. Learning Activities

A. Introduction/Preliminary Activities
Let the class recite the poem again.

B. Presentation
Present the following sentence about the poem.

Let them class read them, then identify the subjects and the predicates..

1. All things are bright and beautiful


2. The flowers bloom and the birds sing.
3. The sun makes the sun bright.
4. We play in the meadows.

Ask: What are the subjects in the sentences? (Answers: 1. All, 2. flowers, 3. sun, 4. we) What are the
predicates in the sentences? (Answers: 1. are, 2. bloom, sing, 3. makes, 4. play)

C. Teaching/Modeling
Say: The predicate in the sentence is a verb. Verbs are words that expresses action.
Let the pupils read the verbs again.

Say: These verbs are in the present form. Verbs in the present form mean the action is taking place at the
moment. A present form can be singular (s-form) or plural.

Present the chart. Say: Let us place the verbs in the right space.

Say: The present form, past form, and future form are called TENSES OF VERBS. Tenses of Verbs show
an action that happened at a definite time whether in the present, past, or future. Definite time means exact or
certain.

Ask: What if the time of the action is indefinite? Say: If the time of the action is indefinite we use the
ASPECTS OF VERBS. The Aspects of Verbs are: present perfect, past perfect, and future perfect.

Show the time line to show the comparison of the simple tenses with the perfect tenses.

Say the following:

 The past perfect expresses an action completed in the past before another action happened.
 The present perfect expresses an action that was completed sometime in the past or is still continuing in the
present.
 The future perfect describes and action that will still be completed sometime in the future.

Say: Today, we will focus on the past perfect tense of verbs.

Present the sentences:

The flowers bloomed and the birds sang. The flowers had bloomed and the birds sung.
The sun made the sky bright. The sun had made the sky bright.
We played in the meadows. We had played in the meadows.

Say: Study the sentences and the underlined words.

Ask: What word is added to the past tense of the verb to form the past perfect? (Answer: had) Say: Look at
the words added to had. The verbs added are the past participle forms of the given verbs. Take a look at the list of
verbs and their past participle.

Let the pupils read the list.

Ask: How are the regular verbs changed to past participle? (Answer: Adding -ed) How are the irregular verbs

a. Let the class complete the chart.

b. Call on pupils to choose a verb from the list then make its past perfect tense. Encourage maximum
participation by allowing a word to be repeated 4-5 times. You may put a mark on the board to show how many
times the verb has been chosen.

cooked, had loved, had walked, had studied, had shaken, had drawn, had driven, had frozen, had spun, had taken, had
fallen, had waken, had spoken, had written)

c. Let pupils choose a past perfect tense of verb and use it in sentence. Model first.

Say: I had written my report already. Now call on pupils to compose sentences.

E. Generalization

Ask: How is the past perfect tense of the verbs formed?

F. Independent Practice

a. Give the past perfect tense of the given words. Then, use the past perfect tense of
the words to complete the paragraph below.

b. The game is very exciting. It __________ us cheer out loud. Some __________ their chairs as they

a. Give the past perfect tense of the given words. Then, use the past perfect tense of the words to
complete the paragraph.

V. Assignment

Choose a stanza from the poem “All Things Bright and Beautiful” then identify the verbs. Rewrite the stanza using
the past perfect tense of the verbs.
(For the fast group: Instead of rewriting the stanza, they will compose another stanza patterned after the original
also using past perfect tense of verbs.)
