3.3 GRAVITY LOADS

3.3.1 Dead Loads

Dead loads are acting permanently without any change during the normal service of life
for any structure along the gravity direction. These are basically the loads acting from the
weight of the different components of the structure. Dead load is normally classified into
two types i) self-weight of structure, ii) super imposed dead load from non-structural
elements. For this building the total weight of columns, beams and slabs of each floor is
considered as self-weight of structure. Weight due to floor finish, brick masonry wall and
parapet wall act as dead load. According to BNBC 2006, the unit weights of reinforced
concrete, brick masonry wall are mentioned below. In addition, the unit weight of floor
finish depends on type of finishing and in BNBC 2006; each type of floor finish has specific
unit weight.
 Unit weight of reinforced concrete, 𝑤𝑐 = 21.21𝑘𝑁𝑚 −3 (Ref. BNBC 2006, Part 6, Cha.
2, Tab. 6.2.1) for brick aggregates.
 Unit weight of brick masonry wall, 𝑤𝑤 = 18.8 𝑘𝑁𝑚 −3 (Ref. BNBC 2006, Part 6, Cha.
2, Tab. 6.2.1)
 Weight of floor finish, 𝑤𝑓 = 0.95 𝑘𝑁𝑚 −2 (Ref. BNBC 2006, Part 6, Cha. 2, Tab. 6.2.2)

3.3.2 Live Loads

Live load is the load superimposed by the use or occupancy of the building not including
the environmental loads such as wind load, rain load, earthquake load or dead load. The
live loads used for the structural design of floors, roof and the supporting members shall
be the greatest applied loads arising from the intended use or occupancy of the building,
or from the stacking of materials and the use of equipment and propping during

~3~
4x Generator Building Retrofitting Design Report

construction, but shall not be less than the minimum design live loads set out by the
provisions of this section.

Roof live loads shall be assumed to act vertically over the area projected by the roof or
any portion of it upon a horizontal plane, and shall be determined as specified in the
following sections.

Considered floor live load of the evaluated building is 3.0 𝑘𝑁𝑚 −2 & at the boiler room
the live load is taken as 7.5 𝑘𝑁𝑚 −2 (Ref. BNBC 2006, Part 6, Cha. 2, Table. 6.2.4).

3.4 LATERAL LOADS

3.4.1 Wind Loads

The minimum design wind load on buildings and components thereof shall be
determined based on the velocity of the wind, the shape and size of the building and the
terrain exposure condition of the site as set forth by the provisions of this section. For
the overall design of structures, the general design requirements as specified in BNBC
2006 (Ref. BNBC 2006, Part 6, Cha. 2, Art. 2.4).
Building location: Narayanganj
Basic wind speed: 𝑉𝑏 = 195𝑘𝑚ℎ−1
Building total height: ℎ𝑛 = 9.60𝑚 from the existing ground level
Structural importance factor: 𝐶𝐼 = 1 (standard occupancy)
Exposure category: A
Gust coefficient: 𝐶𝐺 = 1.5001
The equation for calculating design wind pressure is 𝑝𝑧 = 𝐶𝐶 𝐶𝐼 𝐶𝐺 𝐶𝑧 𝐶𝑝𝑒 𝑉𝑏2 and values of
other coefficients vary with respect to each floor height from the existing ground level
and geometry of building plan.

3.4.2 Earthquake Loads

Minimum design earthquake forces for buildings, structures or components thereof shall
be determined in accordance with the provisions of BNBC 2006. For primary framing
systems of buildings or structures, the design seismic lateral forces shall be calculated
either by the Equivalent Static Force Method or by the Dynamic Response Method based.
Overall design of buildings and structures to resist seismic ground motion and other
forces shall comply with the applicable design requirements (Ref. BNBC 2006, Part 6, Cha.
2, Art. 2.5).
Based on as-built structural drawing the concrete moment resisting frames of the
building are ordinary moment resisting frame (OMRF) (Ref. BNBC 2006, Part 6, Cha. 8,
Art. 8.3.10).
Seismic zone coefficient: 𝑍 = 0.15
Structural importance factor: 𝐼 = 1.0 (standard occupancy)
Site coefficient for soil: 𝑆 = 1.5 (soil class S3)

~4~
4x Generator Building Retrofitting Design Report

Coefficient for time period: 𝐶𝑡 = 0.0299

Response modification factor: 𝑅 = 5.0 (OMRF)
3
The equation of fundamental time period of RCC building is 𝑇 = 𝐶𝑡 (ℎ𝑛 ) ⁄4 where ℎ𝑛 the
height of building from the existing base level is. The total base shear is calculated using
mentioned coefficients. And the equation of total base shear is 𝑉 = (𝑍𝐼𝐶 )𝑊/𝑅, where
2⁄
𝐶 = 1.25 (𝑆/𝑇 3 ). In mass source for calculating earthquake forces total effective dead
and super imposed dead load.

3.5 LOAD COMBINATIONS AS PER BNBC 2006

According to BNBC 2006, load combinations for concrete moment resisting frames are
mentioned below. Notification for each load pattern has been properly specified.
Dead Loads = D Live Loads= L
Wind Loads = W Earthquake Loads= E
Wind and earthquake load along 𝑋 and 𝑌 directions are considered for load
combinations. For concrete moment resisting frames the following load combinations

3.6 BOUNDARY CONDITION

In finite element analysis, the boundary condition is an important parameter. It depends
on the building structural system, configuration, foundation type etc. Since the
foundation of the existing steel column is individual foundation (single footing) the base
points of all columns are hinged support. Hinged support condition of any base means
that the point is restrained in translation movement along the three principal axes
(𝑢𝑥 , 𝑢𝑦 , 𝑢𝑧 ) and is not restrained about the rotation of the three principal axes (𝑟𝑥 , 𝑟𝑦 , 𝑟𝑧 ).

5 SUMMARY OF ANALYSIS

After the finite element analysis of whole structure including both super and sub-
structure, the evaluated building is safe after involving following measures:
 All the beams & column of this building are adequate after retrofitting.
 All existing isolated footings are adequate.
 Steel Bracing has been incorporated in some frames to resist the lateral forces.
 Soft Storey has been checked & found OK for this building.
 Storey Drift has been checked & found OK for this building.
 Total Storey Drift has been checked & found OK for this building.
 Torsional Irregularity has been checked & found OK for this building.

6 CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE

I. Installation of scaffolding at site should be confirmed before starting work.

II. Surface must be cleaned by chipping.
III. Epoxy should be used for bonding of old and new concrete.
IV. Drill for insertion of shear connector.
V. Use blower to clean the shear connector hole.
VI. Insert shear connector with rebar epoxy.
VII. Install shutter properly to the required length.
VIII. Casting should be done with appropriate vibration
IX. Shutter should not be removed before 24 hours of casting.
X. After shutter removal proper curing should be done at least for 7 days.

7 CONSTRUCTION SAFETY MEASURES

I. Using safety helmet while working.
II. Using safety boot for protection.
III. Using eye goggles while welding, breaking walls, floors etc.
IV. Hand gloves should be used.
