INTRODUCTION

Algebra is the study of mathematic symbols and the ways for manipulating these symbols. it is a

unifying thread of almost all of mathematics. it is used to solve engineering formulas for the

unknown value using the measured or known value. Calculus and Differential Equations are also

used but often those calculations result in a formula that could be used with just Algebra type

operations. One example is Ohm's Law for electronic circuits.

In this assignment, I will be dealing with laws of logarithms and indices, linear equations and

straight-line graphs and factorization of quadratic equations.

TASK 1 - LAWS OF INDICES AND LOGARITHMS

1. Simplify the following using the rules of indices

Answers
a) ÷

1) Simplify the following using the laws of logarithms

Answers

a) 3 − 2 3 + 6

= 81 − 9+ 6

= + 6

= 9+ 6
= ( 9×6)
= 54

b) + −

= log(125×9) − 25
= 1125 − 25

= log ( )

= 45

TASK 2: LINEAR EQUATIONS AND STRAIGHT LINE GRAPHS

Ø The readings of an experiment measuring the velocity, v (ms -1) of an object at given times t
(s) are shown below

Time (s) 2 4 6 8 10
Velocity 9.8 19.6 29.4 39.2 49.0
v(ms-1)

i. Plot a suitable straight-line graph

TASK 3: FACTORISATION AND QUADRATICS

P3 - Factorise by extraction and grouping of a common factor from expressions with two, three and four
terms respectively
a. Factorize the following algebraic expressions
1. +
= 4 (1 + 16 )
2. − +
= 2 (6 − 4 + 3)
3. − + +
= 2 (2 − + 12 + 3 )

b. Factorize the following quadratic expressions by factorization

1. − +
= −3 −3 +9
= ( − 3) − 3( − 3)
= ( − 3)( − 3)

2. 81x2-4y2
= (9 ) − (2 )
= (9 − 2 )(9 + 2 )
