5 a. What is form factor? Discuss form factor for columns. (06 Marks)
b. A light gauge steel rectangular box section 200 mm  100 mm  2.0mm is used for a
column. The effective length of the column is 3.80 m. Determine the safe load carrying
capacity of the column cross section. Assume the design basic stress being = 125 N/mm2
and all the four elements of the section are stiffened. (14 Marks)

6 a. What are the design features to be considered in the design of flexural members? (06 Marks)
b. For the laterally unsupported light gauge steel beams (I-section) prove that the allowable
bending stress (c) is given by

5
c   - N/mm2
  / ry 2   rx 

a beam. The thickness of the channel section is 2 mm. The effective span of the beam is 3.80 m
(simply supported). Determine the maximum udl including its safe height. The beam is laterally
supported throughout its length. Adopt the properties of the section as per IS 811-1961.
(20 Marks)
