regulator

I. Background of the Study

According to Henrylito D. Tacio ,2018 about more than 3/4 of the respondents

(77 percent) from the Philippines believe that diabetes is inherited from their parents.

About 32 percent of those who were included in the survey are willing to change their

diet to support a member of their family with diabetes, and 47 percent are willing to

exercise with a diabetic family member. These findings were part of the five-year Sun

Life Financial Asia Diabetes Awareness Study in the region. It was conducted in

October 2018 through online interviews with 3,860 respondents aged 25 years old and

above in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam .

The Philippines ranks fifth behind China, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand in the

number of diabetes cases, according to the Western Pacific Region of the International

Diabetes Federation, an umbrella organization of over 230 national diabetes

associations in 170 countries and territories. With the current population at over 100

million, the Philippines has more than 5 million diagnosed with diabetes .

Also one of the factors that puts the researchers to research further about this

topic is the increased number of people die in diabetes. According To think, the

Philippines has one of the highest number of diabetics in the region. “The number of

Filipinos with diabetes is growing at an alarming rate,” wrote Anne Ruth dela Cruz in an

article published in the BusinessMirror. “The numbers, however, could be higher than

reported because there are Filipinos who have not been diagnosed with the disease.” In

the year 2017 50,000 diabetic Filipinos died due to diabetes realted complications like

heart attack, stroke, kidney and heart failure. Then de la cruz quotes “If nothing is done
to stem the alarming trend,”,“the prevalence of diabetes is expected to soar to 20

percent by the year 2045, and more than 100,000 Filipinos would be dying every year

due to its complications.”

II. Significance of the Study

The results of this study will be of great benefit to the following:

The people who have a problem about their blood sugar level. The data given will

provide the patient of the capability of tamarind (Tamarindus indica) as a blood sugar

regulator. The results will enable the people to save money, considering the fact that

treating blood sugar diseases will cost a lot of money.

Doctors..It helps the doctors to develop their knowledge to cure high and low

blood sugar levels.

Furthermore,Th e results of this research can be a gateway to enhance the

effectiveness of herbal plants in our country.

III. Delimitation of the Study

The researchers found out hat tamarind are one of the plants that has the ability

to regulate blood sugar In the Philippines. The researches will perform the extraction

method, maceration to be specific. Maceration is the process by which organized tissue

is transformed into a suspension of intact cells, resulting in pulpy products used as base

material for pulpy juices and nectars, as baby foods, and as ingredients for dairy

products such as puddings and yoghurts (Pilnik and Voragen, 1993; Khatri et al., 2015).

This process will take 2 to 3 weeks to break down and extract the nutrients from

the given variable. The researchers will use a kitchen digital scale to ensure the ratio of

the given treatment. The tamarind leaves extract will be tested in three albino mice.

They are the most commonly used mammalian research model and are used for

research in genetics, psychology, medicine and other scientific disciplines. The

researchers will gather the data before, during and after the treatment. The researchers

will use a glucometer measure the blood pressure of the 3 albino mice.

IV. Research Problem and Objectives

RESEARCH PROBLEM:

This study is about to answer the following problems:

1.) How effective the tamarind extract can be as a blood sugar regulator?

2.) What can be an alternative low cost medicine to regulate blood sugar level?
OBJECTIVES:

-To create an alternative low cost medicine as blood sugar regulator; and

-To make use of indigenous plant in the Philippines as a useful medicine.

V. Hypothesis

Ha: Tamarind Leaves Extract is an effective blood sugar regulator.

Ho: Tamarind Leaves Extract is not an effective blood sugar regulator.

Ha: Tamarind leaves have a component that can regulate blood sugar level.

Ho: Tamarind leaves doesn’t have a component that can regulate blood sugar level.
VI. Conceptual Framework

INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT

-Tamarind Leaves -Collecting of Tamarind Leaves

materials Extract as a blood
-Ethanol Alcohol sugar regulator
-Extraction through
Maceration
VII. Methodology

In this study, the researchers, will use the following materials: Tamarind Leaves,351

Cylindrical Container,90% Ethanol, syringe, Tawas Powder for the extraction method

(maceration). First, the researchers will gather the materials and will start the extraction

process to the tamarind (tamarindus indica). The process will take approximately 2-3

weeks to ensure that aims to extract certain components present in tamarind plant. It is

a solid/liquid separation operation: a solid object (the plant) is placed in contact with a

fluid (the solvent, ethanol). The tamarind plant components of interest are then

solubilized and contained within the solvent. The solution thus obtained is the desired

extract. Third, the extract will test in 3 albino mice with different ratios with4 different

situations:

Situation 1- before the treatment, the researcher will test the blood sugar of the albino

mice.

Situation 2-the researchers will feed the 3 albino mice with a sugar concentration and

gather the data about it.

Situation 3- the licensed veterinarian will inject the treatment with different ratios; 1:0,

2:3, 5:5. And the researchers will gather the data after it.

The polyphenols in tamarind have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These

can protect against diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. The leaves
extract may also help lower blood sugar, while the pulp extract may help you lose body

weight and reverse fatty liver disease. Tamarind has played an important role in

traditional medicine. In beverage form, it was commonly used to treat diarrhea,

constipation, fever and peptic ulcers. The bark and leaves were also used to promote

wound healing. Tamarind is high in many nutrients. A single cup (120 grams) of the pulp

contains :

 Magnesium: 28% of the RDI.

 Potassium: 22% of the RDI.

 Iron: 19% of the RDI.

 Calcium: 9% of the RDI.

 Phosphorus: 14% of the RDI.

 Vitamin B1 (thiamin): 34% of the RDI.

 Vitamin B2 (riboflavin): 11% of the RDI.

 Vitamin B3 (niacin): 12% of the RDI.

 Trace amounts of vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), folate, vitamin B5

(pantothenic acid), copper and selenium.

The findings of these research may vary on the ratio of the treatment that will be used in

the experimental setup. Furthermore, the results of this research can be a gateway to

enhance the effectiveness of herbal plants in our country.
