Innovations Overview
The DD15 introduces new technologies into the HD engine market that make it the industry
leader in innovation. Its turbo compounding, Amplified Common Rail Fuel System (ACRS),
and integrated Jacobs Brake allow the DD15 to create more power without sacrificing fuel
economy or driver comfort.

Turbo compounding adds up to 50 bonus horsepower

Air Management System by converting turbo outlet exhaust gas energy into

increasing fuel economy (fan uses apprx. 40 HP).

The ACRS (Amplified Common Rail Fuel System) gives

Fuel System the DD15 the ability to optimize the tradeoffs between
fuel economy, power, noise and emissions.

Higher oil capacity, improved filtration and operation

Lubrication System on ULSD and CJ4 oil will result in roughly 67% longer oil
drain intervals compared to the Series 60.

Air Management System
The DD15 Air Management System is one of the most innovative in the engine market. The
revolutionary turbo compounding system is unique to the marketplace giving the DD15 a
significant advantage over competitors.

• Turbo outlet exhaust gas

which engages at 900
rpm the hydrodynamic
Turbo (fluid driven) clutch with
compounding connects directly to the
rear gear train.
• At higher RPMs turbo
compounding creates up
to 50 bonus HP.

turbocharger design and improved EGR System are reliable as ever.

performance, consistent operating temperatures and reduced fan on-time.

Department Daimler Trucks 12

Fuel System
Amplified Common Rail Fuel System (ACRS), fuel filter module and electronically actuated
fuel injectors are the DD15’s solution to rising fuel prices, additional restrictions on
emissions and increasing driver demands for a responsive AND quiet engine.

Amplified Common The ACRS provides the DD15 the

ability to optimize the tradeoffs
Rail Fuel System
between fuel economy, power, noise
(ACRS) and emissions.

The fuel filter provides needed fuel

quality using 3 filters:

Fuel Filter Module - 100 micron rated (pre-filter)

- 10 micron rated (water separator)
- 3-5 micro rated (final filter)

The ACRS keeps fuel pressure lower

until fuel reaches the electronically
actuated injectors. Higher pressures
Fuel Injectors
in the injectors increase fuel
atomization lowering combustion
temperature and improving efficiency.

Department Daimler Trucks 13

Lubrication System
Advancements to the lubrication system in the DD15 permit longer oil drain intervals which
means your trucks will be on the road longer between routine maintenance.

- Oil Capacity 45.7 Liters (47

Qts).

Oil Capacity - Almost 67% longer oil drain

intervals compared to the
Series 60 without
compromising engine wear.

Oil remains in block and head

Anti-drain back

- The maintenance free closed

crankcase system removes
crankcase vapors, separates
Crankcase oil and returns it back into the
Breather oil sump.
- Reduces oil consumption while
lowering emissions.

Internal Components / Overhead / Jake Brake
No one is going to hear the remarkably quiet integrated Jacobs Engine Brake. Along with
the hollowed out dual overhead camshafts, the internal components on the DD15 set it
apart from competitors.

The Jake Brake comes standard on

Integrated Jacobs the DD15. It provides customer’s with

minimal noise.

TLC
Top liner cooling (TLC) is designed to
increase the coolant flow around the
Liner top of the liner. This helps decrease
the liner and piston ring temperatures
increasing durability of the DD15.

Fuel economy is improved with:

- Dual overhead camshafts for more
precise control of air/fuel mixture,
Dual Overhead thus optimizing the combustion
Camshafts event.
- Reduced weight from the hollowed

torque response.

Electronics
Over the last 20 years Detroit Diesel has updated, refined and improved its electronics.
With the integration of the latest version, DDEC VI, the DD15 benefits from almost a quarter
century of electronic brainpower.
