1 Introduction
This example HYSYS unit operation extension allows the user to transfer information from
one stream to another creating a “Live Link” between them. It removes the need to use a
Balance operation in conjunction with SET operations.

the quality and support procedures of officially released AspenTech products. Users are
strongly encouraged to check performance and results carefully and, by using agree to assume

3 Installation
Unzip the VirtualStream.edf and VirtualStream.dll files to a convenient directory on your hard
disk. Before the extension appears in HYSYS, it must be registered. The simplest way to do
this is to go to Tools … Preferences, then choose the Extensions tab. Click the Register an
Extension button, then navigate to the location of the VirtualStream.dll.
The Virtual Stream Unit extension should then appear under the Extensions category of the
Add Operation window. (Accessible via Flowsheet … Add Operation, or by pressing F12.)
4 Usage
Add the unit operation by choosing Flowsheet, Add Operation (or F12). Then choose Virtual
Stream Extn v1.1.3 from the Extensions category. Select Reference and Target streams in the
drop down boxes.
As the flowsheet solves the extension copies the input values to the output values. The
extension will allow data transfer both ways but if the transfer checkbox is enabled then one
value needs to be unknown. The user can then specify a multiplier and an offset value,
mimicking the functionality of a SET operation (see HYSYS User Guide for more
information).
