C. S.

LEWIS
C. S. (Clive Staples) Lewis was born on November 29, 1898 in Belfast
(Northern Ireland).
His parents were Flora Hamilton, daughter of an Anglican pastor,
and Albert Lewis, lawyer of Welsh descent. His family and friends called
him Jack, a name he adopted after his dog Jacksie passed away when
Lewis was still a child.
Lewis grew up surrounded by books, a fact that facilitated his interest
in literature from an early age. Very imaginative, together with his
brother Warren he created different fantastic worlds that he later
reflected in his texts.
He fought in 1rst World War as part of the English army, and studied Greek and Latin Language
and Literature at the University of Oxford. In this same university he was an English teacher.
Later he taught Medieval and Renaissance Literature in Cambridge.
In Oxford, he befriended J. R. R. Tolkien, with whom he created the Inklings group, a group of
writers and professors who gathered at the “The Bird And Baby” pub to talk about literary,
historical, mythological, social and religious matters.
In his youth he denied Christianity and declared himself an atheist seeking answers in esoteric
matters. Over the years, in his maturity, influenced, among others, by George MacDonald, GK
Chesterton and Tolkien himself, he regained his faith and he became one of the leading Christian
apologists of the time.
His best known literary work is "The Chronicles Of Narnia", a collection of seven books of youth
fantasy written between 1951 and 1956: "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" (1951), "Prince
Caspian" (1951) , "The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader" (1952), "The Silver Chair" (1953), "The
Horse and His Boy" (1954), "The Magigian´s Nephew" (1955) - written in 1955 but configured as
the beginning of the saga- and "The Last Battle" (1956).
C. S. Lewis, who always defended independent thinking and the search for truth, also wrote the
satire "The Screwtape Letters" (1942); books on Christianity, such as "The Problem of Pain"
(1940), "Mere Christianity" (1952) or "The Four Loves" (1960); social essays, such as "The
Abolition of Man" (1943); or volumes on literature, such as "English Literature in the 16th
Century" (1954).
He died in Oxford on November 22, 1963. He was 64 years old. He is buried in Holy Trinity
Church Cemetery, in Headington Quarry, Oxford.

QUOTES
I believe in Christianity as I think the sun rises. Not only because I see it, but also because of
that I see everything else.
You are never too old to set a new goal or to dream a new dream.
