1. External Environment

PEST Analysis

Political factors include government policies relating to the industry, tax policies, laws and

regulations, trade restrictions and tariffs etc.

The economic factors relate to changes in the wider economy such as economic growth,

interest rates, exchange rates and inflation rate.

Social factors often look at the cultural aspects and include health and safety consciousness,

population growth rate.

The technological factors relate to the application of new inventions and ideas such as R&D

activity, automation, technology incentives and the rate of technological change.

2. Internal Environment

Strengths

- Huge mineral resources availability

- Widespread of mined products like gadgets.

Weakness

- Inadequate risk management

- Lack of trained people and frequent equipment

- Carelessness at mining sites

Opportunities

- Focus on innovations

Threats

- Contaminated lake/water caused by the mineral waste.

- Deforestation

- Loss of fisherman’s livelihood

- Fish kills

Strengths:

Mining industry has high values and bestowed with significant mineral resources available

on the earth to go for especially at lake of Bito in Leyte. Our gadgets, like phones, laptops and

computers are made of parts that have been developed through mining, and that’s why mining

needs to be advocated in our country.

Weakness:

Inadequate risk management due to many internal and external factors in the mining

companies like unplanned events at the mining sites can cause serious loss of production and

sometimes may cause serious injuries or even kill people.

 Due to this nature, safety is always a prime concern for the industry. If not managed

properly it can pose a potential risk to health and safety. Frequent strikes, carelessness at mining

sites, lack of trained people and frequent equipment failures can cause business interruptions.

Opportunities:

Industry management should encourage openness for new approaches and adopting new

technologies in order to expand their knowledge and grow business.

Threats

Many fishermen losses their livelihood, caused by the carelessness at the mining site of the

workers. Fishes and other creatures at the lake died caused by contaminated lake/water.

Deforestation is another inevitable result of large-scale mining. As such several private mining

corporations included massive tree-planting projects as part of their Corporate Social

Responsibility efforts.
