Gasoline and diesel engines that can also be powered by natural gas are
becoming increasingly important in the commercial-vehicle market. CNG
(compressed natural gas) is particularly eco-friendly: compared with
conventional diesel engines, CNG engines emit up to 25 percent less CO2.
With its systems and components for CNG drives, Bosch is adding
additional clean and resource-conserving products to its portfolio for
commercial vehicles. CNG is also more cost-effective than conventional
fuels, and CNG drives thus offer commercial-vehicle operators the benefit
of lower operating costs.
Dual-fuel, or bivalent, drives are also designed for medium and heavy
commercial vehicles. Such drives allow up to 97 percent of the diesel fuel
to be replaced by natural gas. In the dual-fuel method, diesel pilot injection
ignites the CNG, making externally-supplied ignition unnecessary. Such
dual-fuel engines offer greater independence in areas where the CNG
infrastructure is incomplete, since they are fully able to run on diesel alone.

braking allows energy to be recovered, and the electric drive assists the
internal combustion engine when driving begins, thus reducing fuel
consumption and noise emissions. Moreover, full-hybrid vehicles can drive
short distances using just electricity, thus generating no emissions.
Assuming they follow the New European Driving Cycle, diesel hybrid
commercial vehicles can reduce CO2 emissions by 20 percent compared
with pure diesel drives. And a diesel hybrid drive in light commercial
vehicles that have up to 3.5 tons of gross vehicle weight can cut CO2
emissions by up to 28 percent in city traffic with a high percentage of stop-
and-go driving. Apart from the reduced operating costs as a result of
reductions in both fuel consumption and brake wear, there is the added
advantage for fleet operators that their vehicles are prepared for future
emission guidelines: Moreover, delivery vehicles equipped with hybrid
drives can enter low-emission zones in city centers even if driving bans are
in place.

All together, Bosch's work on the HD10LP generator family has increased
efficiency to up to 77 percent and lowered installation volume by
30 percent compared with competitor products. The generator’s service
life has doubled from 7,000 to 14,000 hours. For manufacturers and
operators, those improvements pay off in the form of lower costs. The
HD10LP generator family is supplemented by models that are designed for
28-volt electrical systems and generate 130 and 150 amperes of peak
current.

Bosch is adding a new generator for commercial vehicles to its
portfolio. It is designed for 14 volts and generates up to
240 amperes of current.
Bosch is adding a new truck starter to its portfolio. The HX87-M model will
first be available for 24 volts. Its range of options make it flexibly
expandable, meaning that it can be adapted easily and quickly to the needs
of specific customers. With up to 4.5 kilowatts of power, the HX87-M is
designed for diesel engines that have displacements of between 3 and
7.5 liters and is thus compatible with one-third of all engines produced for
commercial vehicles worldwide. The starter's service life is
800,000 kilometers. It has a mass of 7.5 kilograms and is 23.8 centimeters
long, making it compact enough for all typical fields of application. Like all
other 24-volt starters, the HX87-M is electrically excited. Engineers at
Bosch in Germany and China worked together to develop the HX87-M.
Series production is planned to start in China in early 2011, but the new
starter will also be available in India, Russia, Europe, and elsewhere.
The new HX87-M is an addition to the two existing series HX(F)95 and
HEF109, which are designed for engine displacements of 13 liters and
24 liters respectively. For even larger vehicles and stationary engines,
Bosch offers parallel starting systems. When two or three HEP109 starters
are connected, they can safely start diesel engines that have up to 72 liters

The search is on in the world of commercial vehicles more than ever before
for new ways not only to reduce the strain placed on the environment but
to lower the costs in the operating budgets as well. Fuel optimization for
commercial vehicles – that’s the goal of a new type of assistance system
made by Bosch, whereby the focus is placed on optimized engine and
transmission control on the basis of expanded navigation data such as
slopes or the shape of curves. Cleverly devised algorithms ensure that fuel
consumption is reduced, which also serves to lower fuel costs and lessen
CO2 emissions.

Fatigue and microsleep at the wheel are often the cause of serious
accidents. Bosch has now developed a feature to detect increasing driver
fatigue and advise drivers to take a break in time. Bosch driver drowsiness
detection can improve road safety for commercial vehicles in particular,
whose drivers are on the road for hours each day. The level of fatigue is
determined based on information from the steering-angle sensor or the
electric power steering. “The steering-angle sensor is already on board in
many commercial vehicles as part of ESP®,” says Dr. Werner Struth,
president of the Bosch Chassis Systems Control division. “The feature can
therefore be used cost-effectively and helps to further increase road
safety.” Bosch driver drowsiness detection is a software module. Its series
production will start before 2010 is over. The system can be used in
passenger cars and light commercial vehicles and also be integrated into
various control devices in vehicles.
The need for sleep most often causes brief periods of inattentiveness that
result in specific steering patterns. The algorithm of the new driver

Route guidance with the Truck Multimedia Navigation system offers the
unique opportunity of being able to enter the length, width, height, weight
and axle load for any particular vehicle into the system. Such data as load
weight or hazardous material types can also be altered quickly and easily at
any time – e.g. before loading or after off-loading the vehicle. Once the
vehicle data and the desired destination have been entered, the truck-
specific route is calculated. During route calculation, the different vehicle
attributes are compared with the digital map information stored on the SD
card, i.e. the height of underpasses, the width of winding routes or the
load-carrying capacity of bridges. This makes it possible to take vehicle-
specific criteria into consideration when recommending the corresponding
truck-specific routes. As a result, the commercial vehicles are not guided
through villages with very narrow streets; any elaborate turning maneuvers
in front of low bridges or underpasses can thus be avoided.
Touch screen combined with keys and encoders allow for parallel
operation
With its color screen, the Multimedia Truck Navigation system provides a
clear view of the road geometry and route guidance with automatic map
scaling. Its attractive, yet very functional front panel design frames the
5-inch (13 cm) color touch screen, which, in combination with the easy-to-
use keys and two encoders, allows for intuitive understanding: this
represents a uniquely simple operating concept.
used for such other functions as a rear-view camera, which makes it much
easier to maneuver large vehicles in reverse.

f Wireless Bluetooth connection with long range for data transmission
f Esitronic Truck workshop software with vehicle data and service
information, including from ZF Services
The KTS Truck control unit diagnostic tester and the associated Esitronic
Truck software package have been developed specifically to address the
needs of commercial vehicle workshops and complete Bosch’s comprehen-
sive range of test equipment and spare parts for vans, heavy-duty trucks,
buses and trailers. Bosch offers two different versions of the new KTS
control unit diagnostic tester for commercial vehicles: a KTS module
(KTS Truck) for use with an existing PC or laptop in the workshop, and the
KTS 800 Truck complete solution with the new Diagnostic Control Unit
(DCU) — a robust tablet PC also recently developed by Bosch.
The KTS module can be connected to any standard PC via a class 1 Blue-
tooth wireless connection. The wireless module offers trouble-free data
transmission in the workshop over a range of up to 100 meters. This makes
it ideal for the large distances prevalent in commercial vehicle workshops
due to the length of the vehicles. The KTS Truck is supplied in a practical
case along with a Bluetooth stick for PCs that are not equipped with this
function. An OBD diagnostic cable and an universal adapter set are also
provided. Special diagnostic cables for other commercial vehicle types are
available as special accessories. The KTS 800 Truck provides the com-
mercial vehicle workshop with a complete mobile solution. The new
Diagnostic Control Unit, which was also designed to control other Bosch
test systems, is equipped with a 13 inch touchscreen and is encased in a
highly robust housing with a practical handle. The control unit diagnostic
module is also connected to the DCU via Bluetooth.

The Aerotwin will be available for hook wiper arms in 9x3, 9x4 and
12x4 mm configurations for commercial vehicles with wiper blades up to
700 mm in length. Another design is available for wiper blades that are
800 mm long; this design features an overlapping fastener that connects
the wiper arm to the blade. This feature ensures that even particularly long
wiper blades deliver a high level of synchronicity when in operation. In
addition, there will also be an Aerotwin with spray nozzles affixed to the
wiper blade.
The joint-free Aerotwin really stands out from the crowd, in particular by
virtue of the uniform contact pressure it exerts on the windscreen. Com-
bine this with an intricately designed wiper lip, and you have a wiper that
delivers consistently excellent results. In addition, the Aerotwin wipers for
commercial vehicles are also extremely quiet, far more so than conven-
tional windscreen wipers.
