Tribute to Donors at President's Dinner Caps Off Amazing Year

T he 2009-2010 Fiscal Year was an

amazing one for St. Rita of Cascia
High School, filled with numerous
student successes in academics, athletics,
spirituality and activities. Thanks to the gen-
erosity of St. Rita's alumni and benefactors it
was also a very successfully year for St. Rita
in the area of advancement.
During a tough economic time, the 2009-
2010 Annual Appeal was able to witness over
8.5% growth as it brought in all-time high of
$695,590. The success of the Annual Ap-
peal helped St. Rita award over $950,000
in scholarships and financial aid to current
families.
This highly successful year kicked off with
the 34th Annual Scholarship Golf Outing,
held on July 24, 2009, which raised over
$26,500.

Students Raise $7000 for Cancer Center with "Ritamen Wear Pink"

S t. Rita of Cascia High School went pink to benefit cancer

awareness and research during the month of October. The
St. Rita Family: students, faculty, staff, families, alumni and
friends of St. Rita took part in a “Ritamen Wear Pink” campaign.
This fundraising and awareness initiative was the idea and under-
taking of the St. Rita Varsity Football team.
The football team’s senior leaders approached Head Coach Todd
Kuska '90 and Assistant Athletic Director/Athletic Trainer Zach
Blaszak '00 about wearing pink tape for an upcoming home game,
doing something similar to that of the NFL.
“We wanted to join the other schools and athletic teams all across
the country that are bringing awareness to such an important cause
this month,” said one of football team’s senior leaders and Student
Government President Liam Hopkins.
Both Kuska and Blaszak agreed that wearing pink tape would be
a great idea, and asked the young men if there was anything else
they thought St. Rita could do for cancer awareness. The young
men came up with the “Ritamen Wear Pink” campaign. The NFL
says “Real Men Wear Pink,” so the football team changed it to “Ri-
tamen Wear Pink” and developed a plan to turn St. Rita pink and
raise funds for The Cancer Center at Little Company of Mary Hos-
pital in Evergreen Park.
“We decided “Ritamen Wear Pink” would be a great way to get
everyone at St. Rita involved in raising awareness, and it also helps
raise some money. Many of our friends and families have been af-
fected by breast cancer and other cancers, including our own class-
mate [sophomore] John McNicholas who has a brain tumor, so
this cause is very important to us,” said Hopkins.
The week of October 11th kicked off with posters of pink ribbons
inscribed with an SR being hung around the school. The Ritamen
then helped organized the sale of pink t-shirts and pink ribbons
with the theme "Ritamen Wear Pink" on them. Before and after
school, during lunch periods and even at alumni gatherings and
parent meetings, the football team sold t-shirts and ribbons as well
as took up free will donations, all in support of cancer awareness
and research. The demand for t-shirts was so high that several ad-
ditional rush orders had to be
filled in order to accommodate

As the Mustangs took on St.
Ignatius, cancer awareness was
a main highlight for the thou-
sands in attendance, many of
whom helped support the “Ritamen Wear Pink” campaign with a
donation or purchase of a t-shirt or pink ribbon.
“After seeing the NFL teams we knew we wanted to use pink
tape, but after further thinking we decided to help raise money for
people affected by cancer in any way we could. We were able to
raise thousands of dollars for them by selling t-shirts, headbands
and ribbons,” said Bobby Gallagher, another senior leader of the
football team.
“October isn't only Breast Cancer Awareness Month; it’s also Re-
spect Life Month. This campaign really shows that the young men
of St. Rita really do respect life, enjoy life and care for all those in
need. “Ritamen Wear Pink” was not just about breast cancer aware-
ness; it was about raising awareness for all forms of cancer. We
have members of the St. Rita Family struggling with various types
of cancer right now. This was for them,” noted Blaszak.
“I am proud of our senior football leaders and the entire football
program for their support of this great campaign. It is because of
their hard work and dedication to this project that we are able to
make a large donation to The Cancer Center at Little Company of
Mary Hospital. This is an example of the type of students and stu-
dent athletes that we have here at St. Rita,” said Kuska.
A special presentation by the senior leadership of the football
team to the staff at The Cancer Center took place on Wednesday,
October 20th. The Cancer Center was very appreciative as it re-
ceived a total donation of $7029.78 from these young men.
“We are incredibly proud of our football players for initiating this
effort to make their schoolmates aware of cancer and support Little
Company of Mary Hospital. Their actions have shown us what it
really means to be a champion. To have the vast majority of the
school respond to this initiative indicates that our students really
understand what we mean when we say we want them to be men of
Truth, Unity and Love,” said Principal Mr. Brendan Conroy.
Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A., President, added, “I could not be
more proud and humbled by the actions of our young Ritamen
who are thinking about others and their suffering and are not just
thinking about themselves as society can often lead us to do.”

Fifty-Three Students Inducted into St. Rita National Honor Society
S t. Rita of Cascia High School has formally inducted fifty-
three seniors into its chapter of the National Honor Society.
The induction ceremony took place at St. Rita’s monthly all-
school Mass held on November 1st. Each member from the Class
of 2011 was presented with a National Honor Society medal by
President Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. ’83 and Principal Mr. Bren-
dan Conroy. All of these students have met high academic stan-
dards as well as service requirements in order to qualify for this
prestigious honor, and were chosen based on their embodiment of
the four key elements of the National Honor Society: scholarship,
character, leadership, and service.
The NHS Officers for the Class of 2011 are: President Dan Foley
(Homer Junior High), co-Vice Presidents Michael O’Neill (Cen-
tral Junior High) and Aamir Walton (St. Sabina), Treasurer Brian
Omastiak (St. Bede the Venerable) and Secretary Sean Kalisz (St.
Damian). St. Rita’s chapter of the National Honor Society is mod-
erated by Assistant Principal Mr. Wes Benak ’81.

H omecoming 2010 was celebrated on Friday, September 24th at St. Rita of Cascia High School as alumni, students, families and
friends gathered to watch the St. Rita Mustang Football team defeat Bishop McNamara. Prior to the varsity game, hundreds of
St. Rita fans came out to a 2010 Homecoming Pre-Game Party and socialized with one another as they were entertained with
the live music of Matt Ladd ’06. The legendary 1970 Football Catholic League and City Champs were also honored that evening and the
2010 Homecoming Queen Gabriela Herrera, a senior at Mother McAuley and Varsity Cheerleader, and her court were announced.

Dear Ritamen, Families and Friends:

At the November Ritamen Luncheon (the monthly gathering for alumni who graduated from St. Rita 40 or
more years ago), Coach Todd Kuska talked about the week of preparation our football team was going through
for the quarterfinal game vs. Carmel Catholic High School of Mundelein. He said that win or lose it would be
the seniors last time playing at William Doyle Stadium in front of our incredible home fans. He talked of how
it would be the last time they would partake in many of the pregame traditions that they enjoy before each
home game, and the fact that they will now be remembered as a part of the great St. Rita Football tradition.

It made me think of the great tradition here at St. Rita of Cascia High School. It is not limited to football
championships or athletic success in general. Our tradition is much greater than that. Our tradition is one
of overall excellence. It includes excellence in the classroom, unmatched participation in extracurricular
activities, dedication to serving those in need, and a devotion to growing spiritually with all of this anchored
in our Augustinian Core Values of Truth, Unity and Love. Another piece of the tradition is the unequalled
support of you, our generous benefactors. It is your generosity that allows us to continue our tradition of
excellence, and to be the best high school in the Chicagoland area.

The 2009 – 2010 Academic Year was a great one for St. Rita. Throughout this Annual Report we recognize the
incredible accomplishments of our young men – none of which would have been possible without our loyal
alumni, parents and friends. The continued gifts of your time, talent and treasure are humbling, and please
know how grateful the entire St. Rita of Cascia High School Family is to you.

All of our students know they are part of a great tradition, as they created this year’s theme - Creating
a Future Worthy of our Past. Be proud of our young men for realizing they are part of a special
tradition, and that they know they have a responsibility to add to that tradition. Also, be proud of the
investment you have made in these young men continuing our tradition. Our current Ritamen would not be
