CRYSTAL SYSTEM

The crystal systems are a method of classifying crystals

according to their atomic lattice(or)structure. It is a 3-
dimensional network of atoms that are arranged in a
symmetrical pattern. These structures occur from the intrinsic
nature of the constituent particles to form symmetric patterns
that repeat along the principal directions of 3-dimension in
matter. The unit cell is a smallest group of particles in that
material that constitutes the repeating pattern. The unit cell
completely reflects symmetry and structure of the entire
crystal.
There are 7 crystal systems(or)groups, each of which has a
distinct atomic lattice. Here we have outlined the basic atomic
structure of the seven systems.
1.Triclinic
2. Monoclinic
3.Orthorhombic
4.Tetragonal
5.Trigonal
6.Hexagonal
7.Cubic
TRICLINIC SYSTEM
This is a 3d structure. The three axes are all unequal in length
and intersect at three different angles, any angles but 90
degrees.

Triclinic (a ≠ b ≠ c and α ≠ β ≠ γ )

microcline
MONOCLINIC SYSTEM
Three axes, all unequal in length, two of which (a and c)
intersect at an oblique angle, the third axis(b) in perpendicular
to the other two axes.

a≠b≠c
α = γ = 90° and β ≠ 90°

orthoclase
ORTHORHOMBIC SYSTEM
Three axes all at right angles, all 3 have a difference in length.

a ≠ b ≠ c; α = β = γ = 90°

Ex:Iolite
Tanzanite
TETRAGONAL SYSTEM
Tetragonal crystal lattices result from stretching a cubic lattice
along one of its lattice vectors so that cube becomes a
rectangular prism with a square base and different c. All lines
intersect at right angles.

a = b ≠ c; α = β = γ = 90° wolfinite
TRIGONAL SYSTEM
Is also called rhombohedral. All sides are equals. Angles a and b
are equal and c is different.

a = b = c; α = β = γ ≠ 90°

dolomite
HEXAGONAL SYSTEM
It consists of six sides in which all are equal and the height c is
not equal. The angles a and b are equal.

a = b ≠ c; α = β = 90°; γ = 120°

Beryl
CUBIC SYSTEM
The cubic are isometric is a crystal system in which all sides and

angles are equal. a = b = c; α = β = γ = 90°.
