There are 4 tasks in this self-study assignment. It will take you 90-120 minutes to complete
this assignment. Do one task at a time. Read the instructions for each task carefully before
beginning the task. Good luck!

Task 1

Analysing the Task Statement

As you have learnt in class, the first step in writing a discursive essay would be to analyse
the task statement to help you decide what you need to focus on in your essay.

Before moving on to the task, write below the strategies/techniques you would use while
analysing the task statement.

Read the task statement Ex-2-Studying Abroad and brainstorm ideas. Next read the
sample essay Ex-4 , check if you have the same ideas. Read the sample answer again
and complete the gaps with linking words.

Now categorise the linking phrases under one of these headings.

Remember it’s a good idea to avoid repeating the same words too often to get
higher marks in the test .This will also help you show a range of vocabulary.

In order to get the right impression on the reader, it is important to write a good
introductory paragraph. Read the writing task in Ex2 – Working from Home, underline
key words and phrases and decide what you would write in your introductory
paragraph.

Focus on Ex 4 – (Working from Home) read the introductory paragraphs, decide what
is good and what is bad about each paragraph, and write your comments in the space
given below.

Now choose the most suitable one and then share your views with your classmates.

Writing the final paragraph /conclusion

Read the writing task question in Ex 2 and the sample answer in Ex3 (Too many rules-
1). You will notice that the sample answer is missing a concluding paragraph.
Write a possible conclusion for the sample answer in the space given below.

Now read the five possible final paragraphs (Ex 4) and decide what the good and bad
points of each are. Match them with the teacher’s comments on the right and then
choose the most suitable paragraph for the answer.

Go back to the conclusion you had written and decide what the good and bad points
are.
