Summary of Revised IS 10262 : 2019 Code

Concrete Mix Proportioning – Guidelines

General Observations from IS 10262 : 2019

In the second revision (IS 10262 : 2019), the following major modifications have been made:

(a) In the revised 10262 :2019 code, detailed mix design procedures have been introduced for
Ordinary & Standard Grade Concrete (≤ M65), High Strength Concrete (M65 to M100), SCC
and MASS Concrete

(b) Standard deviations have been introduced up to M80 and above

(c) Selection of free water cement ration have been introduced based on graphs for different
type of cements (OPC 33G, OPC 43G, OPC 53G, PPC and PSC)

(d) Air contents have been introduced for all types of concretes

(e) Detailed explanation was introduced for Batch Weight Mix Proportion calculations from SSD
Mix Proportions (correction for Free Moisture aggregates, Oven Dried Aggregates and Air
Dried Aggregates)

(f) Dosages for Mineral Admixtures (Fly Ash, GGBS, Metakaolin and Silica Fume) have been
introduced for High Strength Concretes

Mix Design Procedure Outlines:

1. Target strength calculation procedure is same for all type concrete (Normal & Standard
Grade Concretes, High Strength concretes, SCC and MASS Concretes)

2. For calculation of Target Mean Strength, introduced a New Factor formula additional to
existing Standard Deviation Formula

3. Selection of Air content shall be taken from Table 3 for Normal & Standard Grade
Concretes and SCC, Table 6 for High Strength Concrete and Table 11 for Mass Concrete

4. Selection of free water cement ratio from the Graphs is same for Normal & Standard Grade
Concretes, SCC and MASS Concretes

5. Selection of free water cement ratio for High strength concrete shall be taken from Table 8

6. Selection of water content shall be taken from Table 4 for Normal & Standard Grade
Concretes, Table 7 for High strength concrete (>M65), Table 12 for Mass Concrete

7. For SCC, Water content shall be between 150 to 190 kg/m 3

8. Selection of Coarse aggregate from the total aggregate volume shall be taken from Table 5
for Normal & Standard Grade Concretes, Table 10 for High strength concrete and Table 13
for Mass Concrete

9. Selection of Coarse Aggregate shall be between 40 to 52 % by mass of the total aggregate

10. Corrections for Coarse aggregate volume for Normal & Standard Grade Concretes and
MASS Concrete (from w/c either increase or decrease) : Every 0.05 w/c ratio decrease ,
coarse aggregate volume shall increase 1% and every 0.05 w/c ratio increase, coarse
aggregate volume shall decrease 1% in the total aggregate volume.
1. Target Mean Compressive Strength @ 28 days (N/mm2) = fck + 1.65S or fck + X
whichever is higher
Note: In the revised code. newly introduced “fck + X” equation for calculating target strength

In the previous code, standard deviations were mentioned only up to M55.

Note : From the above Tables, it is observed that Table-2 Target mean strengths values are
higher than Table-1 Target mean strengths values.

2. Estimation of Entrapped Air content in concrete

Note: In the revised code re-introduced entrapped air content

3. Selection of W/C for Ordinary and Standard Grade Concretes from the Graph
 In the previous code, the selection of w/c was based on experience.
 In the revised code, selection of w/c is from the graph corresponding to the concrete
strength @28days.
 Total three curves are available in the graph. Curve-1 for OPC 33G cement, Curve-2 for
OPC 43G, PPC and PSC cements and Curve-3 for OPC 53G cement.

The above water can be reduced by approximately 10kg for sub-angular aggregate, 15
kg for gavel with some crushed particles (previous code, 20 kg), 20 kg for rounded gravel
(previous code, 25 kg) to produce same workability.

The above water can be reduced by approximately 20 kg for rounded gravel of 40mm
MSA, 15 kg for rounded gravel of 80mm MSA and 10kg for 150mm MSA to produce
same workability.
 For Freezing and Thawing resistance, plasticity and workability improvement and reduction
in segregation and bleeding, Air content recommended in Mass concrete is 3 to 4 % for 80
mm MAS, 3.5 to 4.5% for 80mm MAS
 For Mass Concrete, Target strength shall be increased by 20% for 80mm MAS and by 25%
for 150mm MAS.
 For Mass Concrete, Water cement ratio shall be selected from the graphs (same graph for
Ordinary and Standard Grade Concrete) without considering the increase of strength by 20-
25 % due to wet sieving effect.
