4.3.1 Pile Driving Equipment

4.3.1.1 A single piling rig with hydraulic hammer shall be used. The ram
weight of the hammer and drop height shall be altered depending
on the type of pile to be driven.

4.3.1.2 The set calculation using Hiley’s formula is attached in Appendix A.

4.3.1.3 The pile head shall be protected with suitable size cap and packing
using layers of timber or plywood. The entire axis of the hammer,
helmet, cap and pile shall coincide with the center axis of the pile to
prevent undue stresses across the face of the pile head plate.

4.3.2 Handling, Pitching and Driving

4.3.2.1 UEC representative shall inspect to ensure the pile condition such as
marking, verticality, alignment, level, position and welding are in
order.

4.3.2.2 Check the ground level and piling platform to ensure easy
movement of the piling rig.

4.3.2.3 Visual inspection of the pile before pitching and record down.
Cracked pile shall not be used and should be rejected.

4.3.2.4 The piles shall be marked at intervals of 0.3m or 0.5m for

penetration recording purpose.

4.3.2.5 Handling and pitching of the piles shall be at designated lifting

point.

4.3.2.6 Where the pile is to be pitched towards the driving hammer, a wire
sling shall be tied across the pile at the point not exceeding 0.3L
where L is the length of the pile.

4.3.2.7 The pile with the driving cap shall be positioned into the driving
block of hammer and pitched over the peg position.

4.3.2.8 Plump lines or spirit level shall be used to accurately align the pile
into its vertical position by adjusting the two stay jacks of the piling
rig.

4.3.2.9 The pile-driving hammer shall be activated to commence the pile

installation. The first two meters of pile penetration shall be
carefully monitored with the plump line or spirit level.

4.3.3 Jointing

4.3.3.1 When the pile has been driven into ground and the pile head is
about 0.6 meters protruding, the hammer shall be stopped.

4.3.3.2 Another extension pile shall be pitched over the initial pile and the
alignment again adjusted with the stay jacks. Butt-welding shall be
carried out across the entire external edges of the head plate of the
two piles.

4.3.4 Pile Driving Record and Set

4.3.4.1 The pile driving record form shall contain the following information.

 Pile identification number.

 Driving machine / hammer.
 Length and combination of pile.
 Time start / finish of piling.
 Set of last ten blows and temporary compression.
 Blow count of every 0.3 meter or 0.5 meter penetration until
final set.

4.3.4.2 A copy of the typical piling record form is attached in Appendix B.

4.3.4.3 When the pile approaching the set condition, the piling crew shall
attach a piece of graph paper onto the pile.

4.3.4.4 A timber support platform shall be used to rest the pencil that will
trace the driving characteristic of the pile over a period of ten blows
during the driving.

4.3.4.5 The set record when taken will then be detached from the pile and
marked with the identified number of the pile point.

4.3.4.6 All records shall be submitted to the S.E for approval.

4.3.5 CUTTING OFF AND PILE HEAD PREPARATION

4.3.5.1 Upon completion of piling and approval by the S.E, pile shall be cut
off at the required level.

4.4 MAINTAINED LOAD TEST

4.4.1 Layout for the pile point will be carried out on the basis of the
coordinates given by the consultant.

4.4.2 S.E will be notified using Request For Inspection Form No. 9288-F-
S003 Rev 3.3 to verify the setting layout.

4.4.3 R.C 300mm diameter spun pile will installed using piling rig with
hydraulic hammer.

4.4.4 MLT test for test pile will be carried out in accordance to APPENDIX
D.

4.4.5 The arrangement of MLT is illustrated in APPENDIX C.

4.4.6 Dial gauge and check level reading shall be taken immediately
before and after application of each load increment. Therefore, at
intervals, dial gauge of 2, 4, 8, 15 and 30 minutes and
subsequently hourly intervals, dial gauge readings shall be
recorded. No increment of load shall be applied until unless the
average of the dial gauge readings does not vary by more than
0.25mm in hour.

4.4.7 For each load increment, dial gauge reading shall be taken in the
same manner as that for load increment. The settlement reading
shall be taken continuously at hourly intervals for 24 hours after the
complete load is removed.

4.4.8 Pile Test Record (As per DRB-HICOM Technical Specification)

:

Within 3 days of completion of any pile load test, sub-contractor

shall submit to S.E 2 copies of complete records of date, time,
details of kentledge, equipment, dial gauge used, loads and
corresponding settlement and any other relevant information

together with graphs of load against settlement, settlement against

time and load against time.

4.4.9 Safe Work Load Capacity of Piles : The safe working capacity of
pile shall be evaluate based on the MLT and PDA on permanent piles
as specified by consultant in the drawings and shall be taken as the
least of the following :

a) The load corresponding to a total settlement of 10 mm

b) Two third of the load corresponding to a total settlement of pile equal
to 15 mm.
c) 40 % of the load where the load settlement curve approaches a
vertical asymptote.
d) Standard for Acceptance of Test Pile.

4.4.10 The performance of the test pile shall be deemed to have satisfied
the requirement of the specification, if the settlement/deflection of
the pile head at various stages of loading in the MLT complies with
the requirements given below:

a) When loaded to Designed Working Load, total settlement of the test pile
head shall not exceed 8 mm.

When load to 1.5 times the Designed Working Load, the total
settlement of the test pile shall not exceed 12 mm or 10% of the pipe
diameter/width, whichever is the lower value.

4.5 DYNAMIC LOAD TEST

4.5.1 Dynamic Load Test for piles is done in accordance to the ASTM
Standard D-4945-96 or ICE Specification For Piling (UK) Standard
Testing Procedure. Dynamic Pile Test is based on the theory of
Stress Wave Propagation on Piles (CASE Method).

4.5.2 The test is suitable for pile verifications at the end of driving or at
re-strike for selected piles. The soil condition is to be considered
when determining the time at which to be carried out the test. The
pile driving hammer used for installation of the pile will be employed
to caused the impact on the pile top to generate the necessary
strain and wave propagation. The procedure for impact follows that
of standard pile driving routine.

4.5.3 A set of strain transducers and accelerometers are attached at a

distance not less than one and half times the diameter or width of
the pile section, measured from the top of the pile. These sensors
will measure the induced strain and acceleration of the pile section
caused by the impact. The sensors will be attached to the pile using
mechanical anchor bolts installed into 6mm diameter X 40mm deep
holes drilled into the concrete. Refer Appendix I.

4.5.4 To ensure good field data and protection for the sensors, the pile
top should be at least 3 times.

4.5.5 The pile width or diameter measured from the ground surface.

4.5.6 Upon securing the sensors and connection them to the Pile Driving
Analyzer, the latter is turned on and the relevant pile information is
keyed onto the equipment .A self-diagnosis program is then
activated to ensure that the system is in proper working order.

4.5.7 Once, the self-check is done, the system is set ‘Standby’ mode,
ready to receive the test signals from the impact. The collection of
data from the impact is automatic. Multiple blows/impacts is often
carried out to enable representative data to be collected.

4.5.8 Data from different blows for the same pile will be stored onto one
storage file location on the computer .A representative set of data
will be used for onward analysis. Useful information that can be
display for each impact includes:

a) Mobilized static load capacity

b) Pile integrity
c) Compression stress at pile head during impact.
