PERCEPTION OF BARANGAY HEALTH WORKERS OF THEIR SALARY PER MONTH 1

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Job is the work that a person does regularly in order to earn money. When performed by

an employee in an exchange for pay, a job consist of duties and responsibilities. This means that

a job is very important and in exchange for money, you will do the responsibilities that you are

given. Often when we refer to us the job or work, few questions are raised like "what motivates

people to do something?, How do people feel about job satisfaction?". The reasons why people

take job easily because mostly people take opportunities to make money that’s why most people

suffer about a job or they are not satisfied in their job. According to Martin G. Wolf that the

individual through variety of reasons, tends to achieve the highest level of satisfaction that will

provide pleasure, contention and fulfillment and in parallel, will identify ways of reduction and

eventual prevention of failures (Zlate,1981). This means that the individual tend to have many

reasons in their job, the person wants satisfaction to their job and a person will continue to

contain himself/herself.

In this paper, it focuses the perception the BHW(Barangay Health Workers) on their

salary per month because they usually get low salary for the duties they made once a week.

Satisfaction is one of the factors of the overall efficiency of work performed. This means that an

individual with job arises from satisfaction and the satisfaction will manage a person in doing

something. This can build and defined as the events that give rise to a subjective feeling of relief,

pleasure which may expressed or described by the individual who is experiencing it, but cannot

be seen from the outside by the other person(Manthis,1997). This means a person is subjective to

express its feelings and relief if satisfaction is not achieved and this give rises that job

satisfaction is a serious problem that a person can experience. According to Locke(1976), job

satisfaction can be understood a positive amenity emotion, generated by the appreciation of

his/her own job. This means that positive or negative effects will occur and it depends on a

person if he/she appreciates their own job.

Rationale
PERCEPTION OF BARANGAY HEALTH WORKERS OF THEIR SALARY PER MONTH 3

In finding a great job, it is hard to pick the right job that suits you well. Many people

actually gets wrong about their job choices and suffer in their job. The purpose of this research is

to find the perception of the Barangay Health Workers of Masaplod Sur Dauin Negros Oriental

on their salary per month because as observed, BHW have plenty of work but they only have a

salary of 550 pesos per month . The general objective of this study is to find out the job

satisfaction of the BHW on their salary per month.

An employee is an individual who works part time or full-time under a contract of

employment, weather oral or written, express or implied and by recognized rights and duties.

This means that an employee or a worker has their own responsibility as a worker, they cannot

stop their duties because they are employed to their duties and this leads to consuming their time

to do anything else to have money. In addition, If a person dislike his/her job, that person could

experience fatigue easily because of the stress and pressure he/she puts in a job. This arises that

It is important to know yourself before you job because you can help yourself by knowing

yourself.

Furthermore, this study can help individual people should be aware of how job

satisfaction can affect an individual. And It can help children to make them be aware of

themselves in order to make right choices in life and pick the right occupation that suits their

personality.

Theoretical Background of the Study

PERCEPTION OF BARANGAY HEALTH WORKERS OF THEIR SALARY PER MONTH 4

This study focuses on the perception an employee about their job satisfaction of their

salary per month. The theory will guide this study throughout and this is called Herzberg's

Motivation Theory or Two Factor Theory.

Two Factor Theory

On 1959, Herzberg,Mausner, and Snyderman reported research findings suggested that

man has two sets of needs. Needs as an animal to avoid pain and his need as human to grow

psychologically. These findings led them to advance a "dual factor" theory of motivation. Since

that time, the theory has caught the attention of both industrial managers and psychologist. The

subjects were requested to recall a time when they had felt exeptionally good about their jobs.

The investigators sought by further questioning for the reasons of their feelings of satisfaction

and weather their feelings of satisfaction had affected their performance. Finally the sequence of

events that served to return the workers attitude to normal was incited. This means that the two

factor theory was illustrated as to the job and their satisfaction about their job.

According to the theory, the satisfiers are related the nature of work itself and the rewards

that how directly from performance to work. On the other hand the dissatisfaction factors are

associated with the individual's relationship to the context on the environment in which he/she

does his/her work. This means that dissatisfaction only arises if the environment is bad

surrounding his/her job just like the low salary that he/she receives. Working conditions affect

the theory weather the effect is satisfaction or dissatisfaction.

Figure 1. The representation of the Two Factor Theory

Figure 1 shows that Motivators are affected through the satisfaction of an employee just

like varied work, sense of achievement and recognition. All that factors are the effects of the

motivation and it satisfies a person. On the other hand the arrow going down represents the de-

motivators that causes dissatisfaction and create factors such as poor pay or low salary, the

policy, and the pressure. All of the factors has an effect of a person in de-motivating a person.

The Model shows both positive and negative sides and it depends on a person who is satisfied or

not satisfied at his/her work.

Health is an integral part of our socio-economic development and not be isolated

from the total development process in our country. Health Services should be geared toward all

efforts that would ensure every individuals enjoyment in his/her longevity of life. Health workers

can facilitate community participation Health system and educate providers about health needs

and outcomes of care meaning the role of being a health worker is more than going to the

barangay hall and take his or her duties. It is all about informing health in a community and

assisting each and everyone in the field of health. A community heal workers creates programs

that could also serve as a vital resources for recruiting community members into health related

careers. The federal government should find basic research community health workers including

randomizes trials of community health workers interventions such as those currently being

supported by the National Heart,Lung and Blood Institute and the National Center for Nursing

research(L. Bone,1993). This means that community health workers are important due all health

related problems are important to know. It is essential to provide community health workers to

provide opportunities for continuing health education.

A statement from WHO (World Health Organization) study group suggest that

"Community Health Workers should be members of the communities where they work". They

should be selected by the communities, should be answerable to the communities for their

activities, should be supported health system but not necessarily a part of its organization and

have shorter training than professional workers. This means that the health workers should be

connected to other professional organization and in order in order to be a community health

worker you should be chosen by the community itself. Therefore health personell needs skills in

assessing community situations, interacting negotiating with people in groups as well as with

individuals and teaching using participatory technique.

The present approach was launched from the foundation provided by the Picker Institute

in its qualitative work exploring employee perceptions of the barriers providing patient-centered

care (Picker Institute,2000). The provider institute conducted focus groups with 326 professional

health care providers in four United States cities. This all means that the picker the picker

institute and then wants a way to provide health services which implied that giving health

providers are important and should be approached by the Picker Institute.

Importantly employee satisfaction tends to be significantly higher in such health

organizations (Johnson,1996). This states that in health organization worker have higher

significant in satisfaction . Work values have been shown to be related to the way people feel

about their work ( Spence,1985). This means that work values and their subsequent effect on

work related could cause emotions, cognitions, or behaviors that may result to job satisfaction or

dissatisfaction. The effect of the value you put in a job could cause something to happen. If

values are relatively stable, It would be important to examine role of selecting a job in a process

(Raulin & Meglino,1989). This primarily means through a person that we see the process of the

value he/she put in a job. Many organizations are now restructuring to achieve cleaner flatter

organizations structures (Milkovich & Boudreau,1991). As a result of this restructuring

responsibilities and decisions in a career or job.

Related Studies

Job satisfaction is a complex phenomenon as evidenced by many related factors

identified in the studies already discussed. The Identification of these factors and exploration of
PERCEPTION OF BARANGAY HEALTH WORKERS OF THEIR SALARY PER MONTH 8

their effects on job satisfaction has the potential to refine the model's of employee's job

satisfaction and aid the development of Management Interventions (Blegen,1993). Thus means

that job satisfaction is a bit complex and most of the reasons why it is complex as it is because

explorations of the effects of job satisfaction is yet to discover.

Blegen's (1993) meta-analysis found that job satisfaction was strongly associated with

stress and organizational commitment. Communication with supervisors, autonomy, recognition,

routinization communication with peers, fairness and locus control that is usually associated with

the effects of job satisfaction.

According to Edward & Lymanw (2001), It is not hard to see how the assumption that

high performance came to be popularly accepted. Not only did it fit into value system, job

satisfaction have data support at this point. This means that If a person experience high

satisfaction of his/her job, It is not hard to see the high performance of a person.

Some studies even pointed that the job satisfaction relationship provides a convenient

empirical index for examining the more general issues of work and non- work relations. It is the

measure of satisfaction with work, life overall, and specific facets of nonworking life can be

thought of as outcroppings of activities and sentiments in different realms in life. The strength of

empirical relationships among this outcroppings can provide an index of the strength with which

work and no work elements of life are related(Near,Rice,&Hunt, 1978).

This gives rise to common assumption that employee satisfaction directly effects

performance resulting to positive and negative effects and it is dependent on the employee as

defined by Brayfiels and Crockett. This means that a direct dissatisfaction of an employee leads
PERCEPTION OF BARANGAY HEALTH WORKERS OF THEIR SALARY PER MONTH 9

to poor performance and the satisfaction of an employee leads to higher performance and it is

defined by the factor affecting the employee.

Figure 2. The Conceptual Figure of the Study

The figure above shows the relationship of the monthly salary of the Barangay Health

Workers to the Job satisfaction, Job dissatisfaction, Job performance and behavior. First the low

salary of the BHW per month is related to the job satisfaction in the fact that if an employee is

happy or contented in a particular job even though the job gives low salary, it achieves job

satisfaction. On the other hand if low salary gives pressure to a person or other factor then it

would lead to dissatisfaction of his/her job. Both job satisfaction and dissatisfaction affect the job

performance because it is weather high or low performance of work. The high performance goes

to the job satisfaction and the low performance goes to the low performance and all behaviors

caused by the job performance will be directly proportional to the job performance meaning if

the performance is bad the behavior is also bad.
