Chapter I

PROBLEM AND IT’S SETTING

Background of the Study

Nowadays, social networking has made an enormous impact on the lifestyle

of individuals around the globe. It has already been a huge contribution to the daily
social routine of the people in various types of communities.

The society is now into social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter,
MySpace, Tumblr and etc. Even low-class people are into these social networking
sites as well.

Actually, these social networking sites have played a big part to the global
community in terms of communication purposes. Some use these sites in order to
communicate to their loved ones across the globe, in different countries as
possible. Companies and business people use it for selling and advertising
products and for gaining customers. Some also use it as a media for gaining friends
and for engaging in relationships and others use these internet sites for gaming
purposes. But what is bothersome today is the way students use these networking
sites.

Social Networking is helpful among students in ways such as

communicating about projects and tasks in school but some students cross the
boundaries of using such sites. They use it for sexual and intimacy purposes.
Some use it for gambling purposes. Misuse of such sites are what makes the social
networking world hazardous to all people involved in it especially to students of
minor ages. What’s more harmful is that it seldom leads to the destruction of the
student’s foundation for their future – which is education (Hou, Yubo,2018).

The Internet is a learning innovation that has gone into each part of life as
a methods for data. Despite the fact that the reason for its rise was to achieve
secure, quick, modest data what's more, to encourage correspondence, today it
has turned into a methods for causing huge changes in people and society. The

1
way that web utilization happens freely of existence over a virtual situation leads
to changing types of correspondence. Also, web based life, which is an expansion
of web innovation, changes correspondence channels among individuals. The
utilization of web based life in Philippines and around the globe is expanding,
particularly youngsters and understudies show serious enthusiasm for it. As per
data given by Internet World Stats (2017) in light of information given by driving
associations in Internet explores (Nielsen/NR, eTForcasts, CIAlmanac, ITU, IWS,
CIA), as of March 2017 the quantity of Internet clients worldwide has expanded by
roughly 3 billion 732 million individuals (49.6%). The rate of increment in web use
2000-2017 was 93.8%.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This Chapter discusses the following related literature that contributes a

better understanding about the research problem. This chapter also makes the
research strong because of the support of the other researchers that is connected
to this study.

Social Media Addiction is a term that is frequently used to allude to

somebody who invests a lot of energy in web-based social networking like
Facebook and Twitter or different types of internet based life. Accordingly, it
influences the individual's day by day life.

In spite of the fact that there is no official restorative acknowledgment via

web-based networking media compulsion as a sickness, the negative propensity
for inordinate utilization of internet based life has turned into a subject of a lot of
discourse and research.

According to Stanley, Luke (2019) there are 3 types of gadgets commonly

used in social media

Smartphones

It is used to communicate through an app where a person can text, call,

video call and and email. It is a portable device just like the desktop.

Tablets

It has similar functions with the smartphones but it can install many social
media apps.

Laptop

A portable computer where a person can bring anywhere. It also has a

similar functions with desktop computers.

6
At Harvard University, analysts have performed MRI filter on individuals'
minds to perceive what happened when they talk about themselves, which is a
fundamental piece of what a great many people do in online life. The outcome
demonstrated that self-revelation correspondence makes delight in the cerebrum.
All in all, it makes individuals cheerful and high when they discussion and consider
themselves. There is no immediate end in deciding whether somebody is an
internet based life someone who is addicted, be that as it may, numerous doctors
have watched comparative side effects, for example, wretchedness, nervousness,
mental issue, and more are the verifications of web based life dependence.

According to Harvard University Researchers concurred that online

networking compulsion is like phone and web dependence issue. These kinds of
scatters are not new and individuals have begun discussing it since decades prior.
Indeed, even in those days, individuals have said that the overwhelming utilization
of web and wireless may make significant issues work execution and adversely
sway one's life, yet there is no official referencing that web-based social networking
fixation is a kind of turmoil.

There are reasons why individuals are seeing online networking compulsion
as a kind of confusion, much the same as dependence on a PDA, the web, and
even liquor. Now and again, when you check reports via web-based networking
media, or after you have posted something, you need to realize who will respond
to a post. Furthermore, at whatever point individuals give a "like" or remarked
something on a post, it makes a person feel incredible. A person will feel that they
are not the only one, they are being associated and somebody thinks about the
person.

All the more critically, if individuals "like" or "offer" what a person have
posted, a person will feel glad as though individuals concur with what a person
have posted and they like it. At the point when this occurs, synapses animate
dopamine, a concoction discharged by the brains neurons to flag other nerve cells
that will make a person feel better and glad. This is one of the center reasons
causing the enslavement. These prizes and the delight a person can get from

7
utilizing social media platforms will condition and program a brain to hunger for
additional. On the off chance that it proceeds over the long haul, it will immediately
turn into propensity and the turmoil will inevitably occur.

According to Ramsden, Sam (2016), Social media addiction can be

considered a habitual disorder and the signs can be identified from what a person
do each day. there are ten (10) Common Signs an individual is Addicted to Social
Media

1. Social Media is the main thing an individual do in the first part of

the day.

Promptly in the first part of the day the individual awakens to check
Facebook or update a status on any web based life stage.

Pretty much every junkie will begin their day with a morning schedule of
checking and absurdly looking through what they have missed via web-based
networking media in the wake of the difficult long periods of rest around evening
time.

2. Wasting time through looking at nonsense and procrastinate

One thing that makes individuals less beneficial and achieves less in life is stalling.
Furthermore, web-based social networking is a major reason and furthermore the
helper for lingering.

Individuals can go through hours looking over carelessly understanding

news and updates that have no importance by any means. They can be a type of
stimulation, yet in all actuality, the greater part of the things shared through via
web-based networking media won't do any great throughout everyday life.

3. checked in wherever an individual go

All things considered, it is gotten that if an individual is attempting to do this

incidentally when an individual is on siestas, yet on the off chance that an individual
is doing it again and again and at pretty much every area, An individual should
truly think about conduct.

8
4. Check notifications constantly.

Checking notifications can be an ordinary activity when the smartphone

buzz. Be that as it may, if checking it all the time paying little heed to whether
telephone hums, an individual must endure a genuine dependence.

Individuals check their telephone since they get warning, and more often
than not, the notices are from internet based life. Which intends to state that these
warnings are not so much that significant throughout everyday life.

5. Needs to contact and converse with companions by means of web

based life.

This is another indication of demonstrating that an individual is a web based

life junkie and the confusion gradually happens throughout everyday life. Gone are
the times of telephone calls and instant messages. With the presentation of stages,
for example, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat, individuals may reach you utilizing
those stages and maintain a strategic distance from genuine physical contact.

6. Constantly Monitor the “likes” and “shares” received.

As what an individual have gained from the over that checking internet
based life prizes individuals in view of the "likes" they get from their companions.
Also, this can be addictive. The reward of getting "likes" from an image posted on
Facebook implies a great deal to an online life someone who is addicted. They are
a type of acknowledgment and immediately become a propensity to need to check
who respond to an individual's post. The issue will develop further when the
someone who is addicted goes into twofold figure enjoys on Instagram or stage.

7. Longing for Internet Connection.

The presence of web isn't the issue, the genuine guilty party is that with web
get to, individuals can without much of a stretch interface themselves to web based
life. What's more, when there is no web association accessible, the addicts will feel
pressure and uneasy.

9
8. Take photographs of mostly everything.

There are a lot of recordings and photographs that circulated around the
web demonstrating somebody engaged with a mishap, yet the spectator did
nothing other than taking photograph or video for online life use as opposed to
helping the ones out of luck.

9. Web-based social networking turns out to be a piece of an

individual's life.

Web-based social networking has been made to interface individuals

effortlessly and to construct connections. There is nothing amiss with this, yet in
the event that it has moved toward becoming piece of an individual's life and it
can't live without checking Facebook or Twitter or Instagram.

10. Checking online life is the primary thing to do during free time.

Investing energy in internet based life at whatever point have a leisure time
than to accomplish and complete things. (Wisdom, Sophia, 2018)

According to Data Reportal (2019) there are 76 million internet users (71%)
where 13% is increase. The device used are mobile phone (89%), Smart Phone
(65%), Laptop or Desktop Computer (38%), tablets (29%), and Wearable Devices
(5%).

The Average daily time spent on using the internet is 10 hours and 2 minutes and
the average daily time spent on using social media is 4 hours and 12 minutes.

The evidence that Social Media Addiction exist

Cornell Information Science conducted a research that taken a gander at the

trouble individuals have in stopping Facebook and other social media sites.
Notwithstanding, when they unmistakably mean it. They even have a mark for the
inability to stop the internet based life.

61% of Facebook users feel they need to check their Facebook at any time once
per day least which is a reasonable indication of an impulse.

10
The Symptoms of Social Media Addiction

The social media users always checks their cellphones always for Facebook or
Twitter. It is one of the symptoms that a social media user experience the ill effects
of web based life compulsion. Feeling low when social media user don’t online and
invest more energy in updating people via web – based networking media than
really investing time updating is additionally risk signs.

The Role of Self-Esteem

According to (Gonzales and Hancock, 2010), One factor that may underlie the
negative impacts of online networking enslavement is confidence. In spite of the
fact that review or altering one's very own online profile upgrades confidence, as
indicated by the Hyperpersonal Model web based life clients are every now and
again presented to others' particular and celebrated online self-introductions,
which can, thus, decrease the watchers' confidence (Rosenberg and Egbert,
2011). For instance, visit Facebook clients accept that others are more joyful and
more effective than themselves, particularly when they don't know well different
clients disconnected (Chou and Edge, 2012).

In addition, the utilization of Facebook was related with decreased confidence, to

such an extent that people who invested a more noteworthy measure of energy in
Facebook per session and who made a more noteworthy number of Facebook
logins every day had lower confidence. Another examination found that youths'
confidence was brought down in the wake of getting negative input via web-based
networking media (Valkenburg, Peter, and Schouten, 2006). Additionally, ongoing
examinations have uncovered a negative connection between addictive utilization
of web based life and confidence. (Mehdizadeh, 2010)

An extensive number of studies have demonstrated that low confidence is related

with numerous mental dysfunctions, for example, wretchedness and nervousness
(e.g., Orth, Robins, and Roberts, 2008; Orth and Robins, 2013; Sowislo and Orth,
2013). Confidence has likewise been demonstrated to be decidedly connected with

11
scholarly execution (e.g., Lane, Lane, and Kyprianou, 2004; Lent, Brown, and
Larkin, 1986) and further fill in as a defensive factor against misfortunes in
supporting scholastic and enthusiastic strength (Raskauskas, Rubiano, Offen, and
Wayland, 2015). It is conceivable that internet based life fixation adds to bring
down confidence, which, thusly, prompts an abatement in psychological well-being
and scholarly execution. At the end of the day, confidence may assume an
intervening job in the relations of internet based life dependence on emotional
well-being and scholarly execution.

In addition, Addiction Resource (2014) stated that a recent report demonstrates

that over the top utilization of innovation by youngsters has caused disturbances
in their physical and psychological wellness, resting designs, their weight and
levels of activity and outstandingly in their school works. 40% of youthful grown-
ups and 21% of grown-ups, confess to utilizing online life even while in the
restroom. All things considered, inquire about demonstrates to us that internet
based life is addictive. Studies demonstrate that all the retweets and Facebook
preferences have influenced our mind's reward zone. Online life cooperation
resembles syringing dopamine straight into the framework.

The Mechanism of Addiction

According to Airth, Maria (2018) Our society and its pathways, influence our
choices and sensations. When we experience something fulfilling (or utilize an
addictive substance) neurons in the chief dopamine-delivering regions in the mind
(the VTA) are initiated, causing dopamine levels to rise. Accordingly, the cerebrum
gets a "reward" and connects the medication or movement with uplifting feedback.
Hence, exercises which increment dopamine levels are the premise to the
component of addiction.

In Addition, because of the commonness of online life in our lives, the individuals
of the world are more interconnected than at some other time ever. Along these
lines, there could be a recognition that individuals are more joyful on the grounds
that they are associated with more individuals. In Addition, Nezlek,
Richardson,Green, and Schatten-Jones (2002) found that members who were all

12
the more socially dynamic [offline] announced more prominent life fulfillment and
higher mental prosperity. Be that as it may, social collaboration in the virtual world
recounts to an alternate story, particularly when those online associations sway
our disconnected relational connections. All through the previous decade, online
networking use has developed exponentially and has changed the manner in
which we speak with one another.

Facebook is the most utilized online media stage in the world (Beyens, Frison,
and Eggermont, 2016; Steers, 2016) and has a high potential for affecting the
feelings and connections of young people who use it (Kross et al., 2013).

In addition, individuals who use social media every now and again have expanded
degrees of negative feelings, for example, jealousy and seclusion. All things
considered, the propensity of others to twist reality (through particular posting) in
their internet based life can make some vibe that every other person has a superior
life than the watcher. This can prompt sentiments of jealousy. In any case, it is very
normal for individuals to adorn (or counterfeit) parts of their lives via web-based
networking media with an end goal to have all the earmarks of being more than (or
superior to anything) what they are. Some regular zones in life are:

Appearance

The person will compare it’s appearance in terms of skin tone, garments,
and face with other social media users.

Relationships

Will have self-pity because of how happy the other social media users when
it comes to relationship.

Travelling

Plans to waste it’s financial savings just to travel and forget the other
financial priorities.

13
Food issues

The proper eating habit of a person can be change because of what had
seen on other social media users. Without the advice of a doctor it can lead to
possible eating disorders.

Fitness activities

The person will be conscious about the body and can lead to over exercise
can lead to overfatigue.

Babies and Pets

A young child can see that its parents used social media devices early in
the morning, it will influence the child and it can be a habit of using gadgets
especially social media sites and it can lead to mental disorders and as well as
physical disorders. For some pets like cats who wants silence but because of a
person doing its social media usage can change the pet’s behavior.

Clothing

A person can waste money and time just to follow the trends from social
media

Intelligence

A person can be influence of wrong ideas and information because of what

the person read in social media.

When inquired as to why a person needs to accomplished a specific neglectful

thing, an adolescent may state, research has demonstrated that the normal
Facebook record has more than 300 companions connected to the record. This is
a case of the fleeting trend impact, in which individuals do or think something just
dependent on the quantity of other individuals who seem to do or accept something
very similar.

14
Web based life causes it to give the idea that huge quantities of individuals
trust in specific thoughts since we accept that if an individual offers an idea (or
article) via web-based networking media they're certainly giving their help to that
thought. With so much 'adorning' going on in the immense online life swarm, it isn't
amazing that sentiments of segregation leave delayed use of this type of
collaboration. Something considerably darker can emerge out of the fleeting trend
impact: online open disgracing, an as of late contemplated marvel in which things
like pooch heaping, web based harassing, and even dangers being made as a
gathering happen for an extreme yet normally concise timeframe, ordinarily after a
social offense (genuine or saw) has been made by somebody.

This has demonstrated to be profoundly connected with expanded

sentiments of disengagement as well as significantly higher paces of mental mind-
set issue like uneasiness and discouragement. (Airth,Marla,2019)

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the methodology used to collect data.

Methodology is important because it provides more prospective on the problem
being studies. The methods used in this study are locale of the study, participants
of the study, research design, instrument for data collection, data collection,
validation of the questionnaire and the researcher analyze the data.

Locale of the study

The research was conducted at Lagao National High School Annex was
located in Purok Malipayon, San Isidro, General Santos City. It has 2 hectares land
area. The school is composed of 403 Junior High School Students and 77 Senior
High School Students in total of 480 students and 21 teachers, 15 Junior High
School Teachers and 6 Senior High School Teachers, and 1 staff headed by
Mrs.Site Aisha S.Tanog the principal of the school.

16
Figure 2. Map of the Locale of the Study

17
Research Design

The research design use in this study is the correlation statistical test
which measure the degree of association (relationship). The researchers sought
an in-depth understanding about the relationship between the level of social media
addiction and the demographic profile of Junior High School Students of Lagao
National High School Annex.Primarily, research design helped the researchers to
gather data easily. The researchers are confident to have precise answers to their
problem.

Respondents of the study

The participants of the study are 38% out of total percentage of the
population of Junior High School Students. There are thirty three , (31) grade 10
students and (31) grade 7 Students in total of 62 respondents of Lagao National
High School Annex.

Instruments to be used

The researchers uses an adapted survey-questionnaire and has been

lightly modified from the study of Sahin,Cengiz (2018) entitled “Social Media
Addiction Scale-Student Form: The Reliability and Validity Study” to help the
interviewees understand the question more through reading. The questionnaire
contains two parts: the demographic profile of the students and the 15 questions
which aims to answer the main objective of the study. The questionnaire is in the
survey form.

Statistical Treatment

Test of frequency distribution must be, Level of Association which any of

various factors or coefficients used to quantify a relationship between two or more
variables. The method used to determine the strength of an association depends
on the characteristics of the data for each variable in which 0.1 is the Level of
Association. For significant difference, the researchers used One way ANOVA that
one-way analysis of variance is a technique that can be used to compare means

18
of two or more samples. This technique can be used only for numerical response
data, the "Y", usually one variable, and numerical or categorical input data, the "X",
always one variable, hence "one-way" in which 0.5 is the P-Value.

Data analysis

The first-hand data which comes from the respondents who answered
the survey-questionnaires given to them. First hand data are those that comes
from the respondents who have been surveyed prior to the research. In order to
analyze the data gathered from the survey. The weighted mean from each item
was computed.

The computed mean was then compared to the scale below for the
interpretation.
