Last Chance to Nominate Candidates for

2020 UCO Elections:
February 7 Delegate Meeting
Nominations from the Floor will be taken again at the February 7
Delegate Meeting. The nominations from January will still be valid.
At the January Delegate Meeting there was confusion about whether the “January or
February” option for floor nominations in the new 2020 Bylaws had taken effect, or if the
traditional February date was still in place. The January date had been published in the UCO
Reporter, but the Advisory Committee recognized that the effective date of the new Bylaws
that contained the new date hadn’t been communicated effectively. UCO’s attorney advised
that we could retain the floor nominees from January and repeat the process in February.

Jackie Karlan and the Search Nominations Committee will conduct floor nominations again,
so that additional candidates can be nominated. We have open positions for Officers and
the Executive Board, and there’s no better way to use your life skills, meet new people and
help keep Century Village moving in the right direction. Ask a friend to nominate you, or
nominate a friend. Century Village needs you!

The Book of Essie

The by Meghan MacLean Weir
Reader’s
The Book of Essie is definitely not the kind of book you may watch on TV, which I am not a fan of, religious
I’m used to reading or reviewing, but I was really in- based ones or not. It has a Young Adult feel to it, with
terested in the religious sect/cult vibe it had to it. This three alternating first person narrators, two of whom

Corner
book is going to make you question all the reality shows are teenagers. All three viewpoints were very different
voices that covered a lot of really heavy topics (sexual
assault, teen pregnancy, abuse, religion).
Essie is a seventeen-year-old girl. Her father is a
Preacher in a Mega Church and her family are stars
BY LENORE of the show Six for Hicks (Think Duggars, but not as
VELCOFF many kids). Essie is the youngest of the bunch. She and
her siblings are constantly in the spotlight, giving up
their lives to the eyes of the viewing public. They are
controlled, given no free choice, and are literally pawns
of the concept of money, superiority and supremacy.
Now Essie is pregnant and their public image (and
sole means of their considerable wealth) is threatened.
Essie’s mother, Celia is mortified when she finds out
Essie is pregnant, but she comes up with a plan so the
rest of the world won’t find out the awful truth. Essie
though, has a plan of her own and she is going to en-
list the help of Roarke, a boy at school who won’t give
her the time of day, and Liberty,, a reporter who knows
what it’s like to live your life in the spotlight. I felt that
they were wiser than ever possible beyond their years,
or their experience in a tiny and extremely conserva-
tive rural town.
This debut novel certainly plays well into the times
in which we live. Sometimes in life, we have to stand
up and be counted, be brave and do the right thing. I
was appalled, though, at some of the things this family
covered up. It makes you look at what lengths people
go to, to stay famous.

2020 is a big election year, and although

the general election isn’t until November,
the presidential preference primary is
rapidly approaching.
BY BOBBI LEVIN

The importance of voting in America cannot be overstated. The right to vote embodies the spirit of American democracy. We
have the opportunity to elect individuals who will make concrete decisions about how our government will be run, both on the
national and local levels. Florida’s Presidential Preference Primary Election will be held on March 17. Vote in the primary
so you have a choice in selecting your party’s candidates.

WHAT IS THE PRIMARY ELECTION? The Primary Election is held 11 weeks before the General Election for
purposes of nominating party nominees to be voted for in the General Election to fill a national, state, county, or district
office. A General Election is held in November of every even-numbered year. The election dates for 2020 are:
• Presidential Preference Primary Election: March 17
• Primary Election: August 18
• General Election: November 3

HOW FLORIDA’S PRIMARY WORKS: The state of Florida has a closed primary system. This means in order to vote in
the primary, you must already be a registered party member. You have to be registered with the Democratic Party to vote in the
Democratic Primary or registered with the Republican Party to vote in the Republican Primary. Independents and unaffiliated
voters by definition are excluded from participating in the party nomination contests and can’t vote until the general election.

YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO REGISTER TO VOTE IN FLORIDA IF:

• you are a citizen of the United States of America;
• you are a Florida resident;
• you are at least 18 years old (you may pre-register to vote at the age of 16, but you cannot vote until you are 18 years
old);
• you have not been adjudicated mentally incapacitated with respect to voting in Florida or any other state; and you
have not been convicted of a felony, or have been convicted of a felony and had your voting rights restored.

HOW TO REGISTER/CHANGE PARTY AFFILIATION IN FLORIDA: If you’re not sure if you are registered to vote
in the state of Florida, or which party you are registered with, you can find that information on the Florida Division of Elections
website.

DEADLINE TO REGISTER: Eligible individuals can register to vote at any time. The deadline to register in order to
participate in an upcoming election is 29 days before the election. The registration deadlines for 2020 are:
• Presidential Preference Primary Election: February 18*
• Primary Election: July 20
• General Election: October 5

VOTER REGISTRATION APPLICATION FORMS: Voter Registration Application forms are available at the
Supervisor of Elections office or at a local library. Return your completed form to the Palm Beach County Supervisor of
Elections office in person or by mail to P.O. Box 22309, West Palm Beach FL, 33416.

The Kennedy Bunker on Peanut Island
BY DAV E I S R A E L
Built in just a little over a week this
decaying bunker was created to pro-
tect The President while he was on
vacation.
Some 25 feet under the surface of
Florida’s Peanut Island, located just
off the coast of Palm Beach, is a nu-
clear bunker that was created spe-
cifically to house President John F.
Kennedy and his staff in the event of
a nuclear attack while he was on va-
cation in the area.
Created in a scant ten days by the
Seabees, the cavernous safe house
was located ten minutes away from
JFK’s Palm Beach resort house where
the young president spent a great
deal of time with his family. With the
outbreak of the Cuban Missile Crisis
a top priority became making sure
the commander-in-chief was never
far from a bunker, and so the Naval
engineers created a facility that could
house the POTUS and up to 30 others
for around a month. The corrugated
body of the shelter was then buried
under 25 feet of soil, lead and, con-
