Group4 with 12 points and the group who excelled in
our activity . They are the group 1. Let us give the
Group 1 an excel clap!

Thank you! Back on what you did, The shop work

helped you on how to classify the tool, equipment,
materials and PPE . Those tools have function in
nailcare and it’s very important to maintain each
classification in manicure. Later, I am sure that all of
you will learn the proper maintenance of tool and
equipment in nailcare.
Our activity a while ago has a connection to our topic Ma’am our topic for today is all about the
for today. Who among you has an idea on our topic maintenance of tools and equipment.
for today?

Exactly! Our lesson for today is Maintenance of tools

and equipment.
This lesson pertains the maintenance of nail care
tools and equipment. Aside from handling them
properly to preserve them, one should know how to
sanitize the tools correctly to prevent the spread of
infectious diseases. Included in this lesson is how to
identify and dispose nonfunctional tools to prevent
hazards in the work place.
Take a look at the things around you. Even though
this things may look clean in your eyes but what you
do not know is that there is still presence of
contaminants. Contaminant is any substance that
causes contamination. Salon professional must
always ensure safety and sanitation in the salon to
prevent and control infection and contagious
diseases although it is very impossible to keep the
salon free from all contamination. There is still a
solution to prevent and control infections or
contagious diseases in the salon and that is through
decontamination. Decontamination is removing
pathogens and other substances from tools or
surfaces.

There are three levels of decontamination and these

are sterilization, sanitation and disinfection.

CLEANING

What do you think by cleaning?

Ma’am cleaning is the process of removing
unwanted substances, such as dirt, infectious
agents, and other impurities, from an object or
environment.

Very well said! Cleaning is the process of removing

foreign materials from an object that could harbor
microbes.

Example is the hair in a comb.

All you have to do is to remove the hair from the
comb.

Is that clear? yes ma’am

DISINFECTION

This is the second level of decontamination next to

sterilization. Disinfection is very much applicable in
the salon since sterilization is not practical and
sanitation alone is not enough. Disinfection is the use
of disinfectant and antiseptic. Disinfectant is any
substance or chemicals used to destroy bacteria but
is not safe to use on skin while antiseptic is an agent
that prevents the multiplication of bacteria. Since I is
milder than disinfectant. It can be used directly on the
skin.

Are we clear? yes, ma’am.

Antiseptics are antimicrobial substances that are

So, what do you think is antiseptics? applied to living tissue/skin to reduce the
possibility of infection, sepsis, or putrefaction.

Very good! An antiseptic is an agent that prevents

the multiplication of micro-organisms. Since it is
milder than a disinfectant, it can be used directly on
the skin.

A disinfectant is a substance used to control

What is the difference between disinfectant and micro-organisms on non-living surfaces such as
antiseptic? (Kindly read student A) tools, equipment, and furniture/ fixtures. An
antiseptic is an agent that prevents the
multiplication of micro-organisms. Since it is
milder than a disinfectant, it can be used directly
on the skin.

STERILIZATION

This is the process of making an project germ free by

the destruction of all kinds of bacteria and it is also
the highest level of decontamination. Sterilization is
impossible since you cannot sterilize all the tools and
equipment used in salon
Yes, ma’am.

Did you understand?

Thank you! Nail care tools and equipment must be

sanitized and sterilized not only to keep them last
long, but most importantly to prevent the spread of
infectious diseases.

Do you agree? Yes, Ma’am

Keep in mind that all tools/implements and equipment

should not be used unless effectively sanitized or
sterilized so as to prevent possible diseases and that
all materials are neatly organized on the trolley. All
beauticians should maintain a high standard of
personal hygiene. Wherever possible, use disposable
products and make sure that the client’s safety and
comfort is ensured by using tools and equipment
which are in good condition and that he/she is
provided with the appropriate personal protective
clothing.

Did you understand? yes, ma’am!

Nail salon workers are exposed to potentially

hazardous working conditions. Due to the nature of
salon work, nail technicians must wear personal
protective equipment. Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE) refers to devices worn by workers to protect
them against hazards in the work environment, In the
nailcare salon the hazard addressed by PPE
commonly include chemicals and airborne particulate
matter.
yes, ma’am!
Do you familiar on Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)?
Ma’am, Apron, gloves, and mask.
Give me the commonly used PPE in salon( student

Thank you! It only means that you have a knowledge

on Personal Protective Equipment.
Now let us proceed to discuss each of them.
(The teacher will show the laboratory gown)

Exactly! Scrub suit or laboratory gown protect the

clothes from dirt and harmful chemicals. It ensure
cleanlines, freshness and proffessionism.
(The teacher will show the Gloves)

Ma’am that is gloves

Ma’am wearing gloves can protect our skin and

its covering any open wounds on our exposed
skin.
Very good! Gloves are worn to skin from possible
infection or contamination. There is a posibility of
blood or tissue fluid being passedfrom one person to
another through an open cut or broken skin. These
should be worn when handling chemicals to avoid
skin damage.
(The teacher will show the Mask or respirator)

Ma’am that is mask.

Ma’am wearing mask can protect us from

Precisely! Tell the use of mask viruses.
Very good! Mask protects workers from dust viruses
and other germs, and are helpful when buffing or
filling nails.
(The teacher will show the safety glasses or
goggles)

Ma’am that is goggles.

Very good! What is the purpose of goggles? Ma’am wearing goggles will protect the eye of the
worker.

Exaclty! This protects the worker’s eyes especially

when mixing chemicals.
(The teacher will show the apron)

Ma’am that is apron

Precisely! Give the purpose of apron. Ma’am apron is an outer protective garment that
covers primarily the front of the body to protect
clothes from dirt or stains.
You got it ! Apron is an protective garment for the
front part with pocket compartment where tools can
be placed for accessibility.Black is the color preferred
by salon workers for their apron especially those who
apply tint.

What do you think is the advantage of PPE? Ma’am one of the advantage of wearing PPE is to
prevent damage to workers’ nails and skin.

Exactly! Also to prevent skin from absorbing

potentially harmful ingredients which may cause skin
allergies, irritation, or other related problems and to
protect the wearer's face and prevent the breathing of
air contaminated with chemical and/or biological
agents. So as not to generate a lot of dust, it may be
necessary to wear a dust mask to minimize breathing
in particles while filing or buffing nails.

Did you understand the Personal Protective Yes, ma’am!

Equipment(PPE)?

Any question ? None, ma’am

Again, What is PPE mean? Ma’am, PPE means Personal Protective
Equipment

Give me example of PPE Ma’am Gloves, Apron, Mask, Goggles

Very good! What is the purpose pf mask? Ma’am wearing mask can protect us from viruses

Very good! How about laboratory gown? Ma’am, laboratory gown can protect us against
accidental spills.

Very good! Keep in mind that prevention through

protection is vital.

Now, let go with Occupational health and

Safety(OHS) Workplace regulation.

Who among you has an idea regarding OHS. Ma’am An Occupational health and safety (OHS) is
Anyone? (Yes Student D) a planned system of working to prevent illness and
injury where you work by recognizing and
identifying hazards and risks. Health and safety
procedure is the responsibility of all persons in the
beauty service industries. You must identify the
hazards where you are working and evaluate and
control how dangerous they are

The main purpose of OHS is to protect the workers

from health and safety hazards on the job.
Identify the hazard in the work place, assess the
risk, and find ways to eliminate the hazard or
reduce the risk. Risk reduction includes providing
training on health and safety, displaying health and
safety rules and regulation on the wall, or providing
a written health and safety booklet, displaying the
fire evacuation procedures as well as emergency
hotlines and providing first aid kit workers must
provide well-maintained tools and equipment,
including appropriate personal protective
equipment. Have a set of rules and procedure
covering the health and safety of all employee and
clients and provide any injure worker with
rehabilitation while being paid compensation also
keep records of work-related accidents, injuries,
illness, there causes, and treatment given.

Kindly read the Hazards and Risks in beauty Hazard is something with potential to cause harm.
salons.(Student E) A risk is the likelihood of the hazard’s potential
being realized. Almost everything may be a hazard,
but it may or may not become a risk. Salon product
such as hydrogen peroxide are hazard because
they are toxic, but if they are handled by trained
worker and kept I a properly secured storage area,
the risk is lesser.
There are common workplace hazard and
preventive measure.

Hazard can and do happen, and everyone should

be aware of the safety implications as part of
personal responsibility, a salon worker needs to be
able to recognize when the hazard needs to be
dealt with immediately, or when help may be
needed, and if it needs to be reported to the
supervisor. It is important to be able to identify
hazards before they become risks. The following
are some common workplace hazard and how
injury or diseases can be prevented.

Physical Hazards

What do you think by Physical Hazards. Anyone? Ma’am, A physical hazard is an agent, factor or
circumstance that can cause harm with or without
contact. They can be classified as type of
occupational hazard or environmental hazard.
Physical hazards include ergonomic hazards,
radiation, heat and cold stress, vibration hazards,
and noise hazards.

Precisely! Physical hazard are workplace hazards

that can cause harm or stress to the body. Fall is
the number one workplace injury the may cause
low back pain and skeletal and muscular disorders.
This can be avoided by directing clear pathways,
blocking the area of wet floors, insuring a clean and
orderly work area, and following the proper lifting
procedure as follows:

1. Stand with your feet apart.

2. Bend the knees, Keep the back straight. Tuck in
your chin. Lean slightly forward over the load to get
good grip.
3. Get a good grip on the load and lift smoothly.

Keep in in mind that always lift with the back

straight and the knees bent also keep the salon
floor clean and dry to prevent fall or slip.

Did you understand? Yes, ma’am

B. Mechanical Hazards
Ma’am, Mechanical hazards are created as a result
Who among you has an idea on Mechanical of either powered or manual (human) use of tools,
hazards? equipment or machinery and plant. An example of
a mechanical hazard is: contact and/or
entanglement with unguarded moving parts on a
machine.

You got it! Mechanical hazard refer to machineries

that have the potential to cause harm to the people
and property. Salon tools and equipment involve
moving parts, sharp edges, and hot surfaces that
have the potential to crush, burn, cut, stab, or
wound workers and clients if used unsafely.
Vibrating machinery can also cause work-related
illness and injury. To prevent injury when using
tools and equipment, the following must be done.

1. Make sure equipment is in good working

condition. Electrical equipment must be tested for
safety every six months.
2. Use equipment properly. Follow manufacturer’s
instructions at all times.
3. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
4. Do not wear dangling jewelry.
5. Do not run or rush around the salon.
6. Clean and disinfect equipment thoroughly.
7. Always leave equipment ready for use by the
next person.
8. Report faulty equipment at once and have a
record book of accidents resulting in injury in an
client.

Are we clear? Yes, ma’am!

C. Biological hazards

Can anyone define what biological hazards is? Ma’am, A biological hazard, or biohazard, is
a biological substance that poses a threat to the
health of living organisms, primarily humans. This
could include a sample of a microorganism, virus or
toxin (from a biological source) that can affect
human health. A biohazard could also be a
substance harmful to other animals.

Very good! Biological hazards are biological agents

that can cause harm to the human body. These
include bacteria, fungi, viruses, blood-borne
pathogens, and tuberculosis. Nail salon workers
can be exposed to blood borne pathogens, such as
hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV), if they come into
contact with infected blood from a coworker or
client. Workers can also be exposed to fungal
infection of the nails and feet by touching infected
client skin or by using equipment that has not been
sanitized. The following must be done to prevent
exposure to hazard and protect worker’s health:
1. Always wash hands with soap and water before
and after working with clients to avoid spreading
germs.
2. Examine the skin condition of the client. Cuts,
open wounds, sores, blister or visibly infected skin
on hand, feet, or nails should be avoided. If an
individual is bleeding, ask the individual to use a
cotton ball or tissue to stop the bleeding and to
throw the used material directly in to the trash can.
3. Put a bandage on open cuts or broken skin to
prevent contact with blood or other potentially
infectious materials from a client.
4. Wear gloves to avoid contact with blood or bodily
fluids.
5.Throw away disposable gloves after using them.
There must be a container for disposable infectious
waste and it must be labeled.
6. Clean and disinfect tools after each client.
7. Have an immunization against hepatitis B to
prevent exposure to blood or other infectious
materials during worked.

Did you understand? Yes, Ma’am!

D. Chemical Hazard

Anyone has an idea with chemical hazard?

Chemical hazards are substances that can cause Ma’am chemical hazard are substances used
harm or damage to the body, property, or the and/or produced at work that have the potential to
environment. Products used in nail salons contain harm the health and safety of people at work.
chemicals that can affect the health of workers as Beauty industry is exposed to repeated exposure to
well as clients. The following table lists some numerous hazardous substances including nail and
potentially hazardous chemical ingredients found in skin care products, hair dyes, bleaches, perming
nail salon products and their possible health effects solutions, hair styling agents, straighteners,
and risks. rebonding solutions, peroxides, disinfectants and
cleaning products. . They can harm people’s health
if they get into the body, for example, if they are
breathed in, absorbed through the skin or eyes or
ingested accidentally. The effects of hazardous
substances may show immediately, or it may take
years for illness or disease to develop. Health
effects of some hazardous substances include skin
irritation, coughs, asthma, sensitization, poisoning
and cancer.

Excellent! Who among you has an idea on Ma’am I think one of the ingredients on chemical
chemical hazardous ingredients in nail salon hazardous is acetone because acetone contain
products? chemical.
Precisely! Common chemical ingredients are
acetonitrile, butyl acetate, dibutyl phthalate (DBP),
ethyl acetate, ethyl methacrylate (EMA) formal
dehyde, isopropyl acetate, methacrylic acid.

Acetone is nail polish remover product that can

cause headache, dizziness, irritation to the eyes,
skin, and throat of the clients.

Butyl acetate is nail polish or nail polish remover

nail products that cause headache and irritation to
the eyes, skin, nose, mouth and throat of the
clients.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is nail polish of nail product

that causes nausea and irritation to the eyes, upper
respiratory system and stomach: long term
exposure to high concentrations may cause serious
effect to the reproductive system of the clients.

Ethyl Acetate is nail polish nail product remover or

finger nail glue of nail products that causes irritation
to the eyes, stomach, skin, nose, mouth and throat:
high levels can cause fainting of the clients.

Isopropyl acetate is nail polish remover of nail

product that can cause sleepiness, irritated eyes,
nose, and throat; dry and cracking skin of the
clients.

There are steps to prevent chemical exposure

Most of the products used in the salon are safe, but
when used inappropriately, they could become
hazardous. A worker may inhale harmful chemical
through his or her mouth and nose, or absorb in his
or her skin. These types of exposures may make
workers sick immediately or cause effects over
time. To prevent health, here are the things that
should be observed by salon workers:
1. Choose safer products, read about the product
being used, and follow manufacturer’s instructions
when using all nail salon products. Whenever
possible, use products with the least hazardous
chemicals in them such as acid-free products.
2. Use only the amount of product needed to
perform a service. Take care when mixing, pouring,
and filling to avoid spillage.
3. Label chemicals moved from large bottles to
smaller bottles with the information from the
manufacturer’s label. Close bottles tightly when
they are not being used so the product does not
spill or get into the air.
4. Wear protective clothing, gloves, masks, and eye
wear/goggles especially when handling and
transferring products to keep them off of skin and
out of eyes. If there are cuts, tears, or holes in the.
gloves, replace them immediately.
5. Cover and protect cuts or cracks in your skin.
Damaged skin can increase exposure and
therefore chemical absorb.

Keep in mind that both clients and workers in the

salon are at risk when chemicals are involved.
Exposure to chemicals can cause severe reactions
and skin damage, but workers are at a high risk
because their exposure is greater and so they have
tot take extra care when handling chemicals.

Did you Understand class!? Yes, ma’am

E. Ergonomic Hazards

What do you think by Ergonomic Hazards? Ma’am, ergonomic hazards is the study of how
equipment and furniture can be arranged in order
that people can do work or other activities more
efficiently and comfortably . It is important in the
adaptation of work conditions to the physical and
psychological nature of people.

Precisely! Ergonomic is the scientific study of

equipment design, as in office furniture for the
purpose of improving efficiency, comfort, and
safety. Ergonomic hazards are conditions where a
salon worker’s physical workplace or work
procedures do not match up with his physical size.
Sitting for a long period of time, repetitive
movements like filing and buffing nails and resting
hands, wrist, and forearms and/or elbows against
hard surfaces are common ergonomic hazards in
the salon that lead to pains and strains. Here are
some good practices that can reduce pains and
strains to the body:
1. Use an adjustable chair that gives proper back
support.
2. Sit properly with the feet flat on the floor. Avoid
stooping or slouching. Work in a well-lighted area
and position the clients hands or foot properly to
avoid bending.
3. Ensure the proper blood flow to the legs by
making sure that there is enough space between
the back of the knees and the front edge of the
chair.
4. Put a towel or a cushion on the work table edge
for a softer surface for the arms. Resting hands,
wrists, forearms, and elbows against hard or sharp
edges of work tables can result to pain.
5.Put soft pads on tool handles to make them
longer and easier to hold .
6. Do not work too fast. Working too fast makes the
body become tensed that in turn could cause
muscle pains.
7. Change position and do gentle stretching
exercises to relax the muscles and joints.

Those are some common workplace hazard and

how injury and diseases can be prevented.
