THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Education is one of the important matters that we value most in life especially for the students

and as long as for the part of the parents. Learning and pursuing to graduate and having a

diploma are one of the greatest happiness for the parents. Education as they said is the key to

success in life. To have a better future and to earned money. Adding two years to basic

education has a great impact to ourselves, to our country.

Education means a lot in our lives as it facilitates our learning, knowledge and skill.

School plays a great role in everyone’s life. Better education is very important tool for everyone

to succeed in life and get something different. It gives many purposes to the life such as

enhancement of the personal advancement, increase social states, increase social health,

economical progress, success to the nation, set goals in life, and makes us aware towards social

issue and gives solution to solve environmental problems. Education develops the people’s

mind to a great level. It makes us able to become a good learner and understand more aspects

in life.

May 15,2013 when former president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino together with

the Department Secretary led to pass the addition of two years to basic education to

guide and help the students to have more time to choose their career that suits for them

and Filipino students will be prepared to further study and work. But for some parents

these two years will still be a burden for their children for some it has a good effect.

The one that could help to face with economic competition and worried about that

future skill work forces would help solve by adding two years on the new curriculum.

Significance of the Study

The vital findings of this research could be highly important and beneficial specifically to the

following individuals.

Curriculum Developers. This study will benefit the curriculum developers to study,

decide, reject, revise and retain the curriculum to make it tailored-fit to the students’ learning

needs.

School Administrators. This study will benefit the administrators in improving learnings

needed to immerse students in a fun way of enhancing their skills and characteristics.

Teachers. This study will help teachers motivate learners to enjoy teaching about the new

curriculum.

Students. They will get practical information why the new curriculum is very important

for their improvement and this two years will guide and help them to have more time to choose

their own career that suits for them.

Parents. This study seeks to assist parents in understanding and guiding their children to

the right path and will convinced the parents to open up their minds about the two years added

to basic education. They must not think that this is just a burdened for them but a solution for

their child’s improvement and success. They must know the benefits of this when their child

go to college.

Researchers. The result of this study will serve as a basis for future researchers who plan

to come up with a follow-up or a similar study.

Definition of terms

Facilitates- to make easier

Enhancement- to increase or improve in value, quality, desirability or attractiveness

Fruitful mind- producing a good result: very productive.

Arguing- to give reason for or against something: to say or write things in order to change

someone’s opinion about what is truth, what should be done etc.

- To cause (someone) to decide to do or not do something by giving reasons.

- to disagree or fight by using angry words

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This new K-12 curriculum may affect financial support but it can make all the

students to enhance their skills. In some other point many parents are arguing for this new

curriculum because it affects the financial of others who can afford it. Most of the teachers,

students, and parents are agree about this to prepared their children in college. K-12 curriculum

stands to help all the students to know the different strands and different courses in the near

future. Illustrated below is the conceptual framework of this study showing the flow and

structure of the research paper.

Statement of the problem

In early 20th century, k-12 curriculum. There are some causes why they don’t want the

curriculum to be approved because some of the Filipino family can’t afford the financial

support due to lack of works. Adding another 2 years in secondary education may enhanced

the students ability to proceed in college. But in other opinion k to 12 is buried for them

because they need to buy a new uniform for their child. In some other point k to 12

curriculum can be the solution for a better education for the family who can’t afford to

proceed their children in college.

To determine the probably effect of k to 12 curriculum; The solution for the better education

in Rural Area in The Philippines specifically answer the following questions.

1. Why does the new curriculum is better than the old curriculum?

2. What is the benefit of this k-12?

3. Why does other think that this 2 years was just an another burdened for them?

4. What is the other opportunity waiting for graduated students of senior high school?

5. How does k-12 curriculum improve the basic of learning?

6. Why does k-12 is a important matter for the students?

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In this chapter, they will see the review of related literature that discusses what have

been written about the K-12 Curriculum: The Solution for Better Education. The articles,

studies, literatures and quotations written in this section will give a wider ad broader

understanding in the advantages of the new curriculum.

The study by Connelly (2013) cited that schools have always played a vital role in

ensuring that students have the skills needed for the job or career they have chosen. The key

function of education is to fully prepare students for life after schooling preparation for the

world of work is a necessary and vital part of that equation. As our society and economy

continues to evolve it may be time to rethink how public education aids students in choosing

career and education pathways. Additionally, due to economic and social changes our

Waugh (2013) cited, high standard of living, is an important part of culture and

values. The education system has a significant and direct impact on the quality of out

workforce a economic productivity and ultimately, our ability to prosper as business, as

people, and as a nation rely on our public school to provide highly skilled and educated

talent. K-12 is a solution to create opportunities that will help all children from the time they

enter the classroom to when they join the workforce.

This literature shows that K-12 curriculum is a solution to provide highly skilled and

educated talent. It is important part of culture and values. This enhance the productivity and

ability of the children from the time they enter the classroom.

Republic Act K-12 which is known as “Enhance Basic Education Act of 2013” or “K

to 12 Basic Education Program Law” states that the graduate of basic education shall be an

empowered individuals who has learned, through a program that is rooted on sound

educational principles and geared towards excellence, the foundations for learning throughout

life, the competence to engage in work and be productive, the ability to coexist in fruitful

harmony with local and global communities, the capability to engage in autonomous,

creative, and critical thinking, and the capacity and willingness to transform others and one`s

self.

This literature shows that the basic education shall be an empowered individuals who

has learned. It consisted creative, and critical thinking, and the capacity and willingness to

transform others and one`s self. The competence to engage in work and be productive.

Edwards (2011) cite that career choice is a complex decision for students since it

determines the kind of profession that they intend to pursue in life. Students should make

career choice while in secondary school, so they will be able to face problem of matching

their career choices with their abilities and school performance.

This study distinguish that K-12 Curriculum is there for the students to choose the

right track that suits for them and in matching their career choices with their abilities and

school performance. It is very important to choose the right track because this is the guide

for choosing right track in college. They will be able to face problem of their choices.

How can we ensure that education is the right one for the times? Skill sets will be

required for the future. The next generation will need to be entrepreneurial, willing to take

risk and be multicultural. Lynch (2013)

This quotation explains that future workforces would need to take a risk to get a

better future to be successful in life and determination must be there to pursue their dreams in

life. And how to ensure that education is the right one for the times. The K-12 is not the best

way to improve our country.

In the study of Perez regarding Factors According Career Preferences indicated

that gender, area of residence, school attended, attitude, self-employment, prestige,

employment security, financial support, career specialization, career flexibility, personal

interests, availability of job, apply, advancement, knowledge and lastly learning experiences

are among the top reasons in choosing their career.

This study explains that implementing the new curriculum has many steps to become

successful. This K-12 curriculum explains that it has good effect in the upcoming students

who would enter the new curriculum. They are preparing the students so they will be

advanced and they will have knowledge when they enter college.

Synthesis

according to their studies, they both emphasis the possible effect and the possible

consequences that the new curriculum have a good effect for the improvement of the

students. They both stated and how their situation may affect their future.

For further elaboration use all know that the students have a big part on this case. With their

help and support, this curriculum will surely benefit for them.

The researcher idea in K-12 Curriculum is more likely similar to the article of Connelly and

Waugh. The ideas of researcher about the new curriculum is that it is the new curriculum

would only like to improve the skills and knowledge of all Filipino students.

CHAPTER 3

Research methodology

The qualitative research design is being used in this study. The researchers will use

individual interview in gathering information and data. The method will be base on grounded

theoretical methodology, to interpret the perceptions of the respondents. The respondents

will answer questions of the researcher to get the information and ideas that they know about

the topic of this study. The study will be conducted at Natividad High School. The target

respondents of this study are the students of Natividad High School. The answer will be

recorded using the questionnaire to get all the information accurately. The data will be

analyzed using thematic content analysis.

Research design

The qualitative research design using individual interview will be conducted to gather

data. The researchers seek for perceptions and ideas of the respondents about the advantages

of K-12 Curriculum.

Respondent

The sample will be selected from the students of grade 11 and 12 that has knowledge

and experience in being a senior high school. The researchers will interview the students to

get information that may support the study. Non-probability purposive sampling will be

launch in selecting the appropriate respondents that can give enough information needed in

the study.

Instrument used

Semi-structured interviews which are interviews that allow the researcher to have

flexibility in the way they ask question were utilized in interviewing the students in senior

high school.

Data collection

The researchers identify the students of Natividad high school. They will select among

all the best respondents that can give enough information about the problem of the study.

After selecting the researchers will ask the permission of the choose respondents to be part of

the study. The respondents will tell all the information that they know about being a senior

high school students. Using the individual interview the researchers will use a questionnaire

to record all the answers of the respondents.
