nearly so; stable in air, but
slowly darkens on exposure to
light; melts between 234°C
and 239°C.

Urea Colorless to white, prismatic 60.06 g/mol

crystals or a white, crystalline
powder; almost odorless and CH4N2O
has a cooling saline taste;
may gradually develop a slight
odor of ammonia, especially in
the presence of moisture;

standing or on heating,
decompose into NH3 and
CO2.

Acid powder that is odorless and
has very little initial taste, but it C15H15NO2
has a bitter aftertaste; darkens
on prolonged exposure to
light, is nonhygroscopic, and
is stable at 25°C, 37°C, and

Substance Uses
Sulfamerazine Closely resembles sulfadiazine in its
antibacterial properties, toxicity, and
therapeutic uses. It is widely employed
alone and in sulfonamide mixtures in
those infections in which the systemic
antimicrobial actions of the sulfonamides
are indicated.
Urea Urea is presently used intravenously as
an osmotic diuretic in the treatment of
oliguria following burns, surgery or
trauma; in promoting diuresis following
prostatectomy; and to reduce intracranial
and intraocular pressure. It has also been
shown to be effective in status
epilepticus.
Mefenamic Acid An analgesic drug indicated for the relief
of mild to moderate pain when therapy
will not exceed 1 week. Mefenamic acid is
also indicated for the relief of pain
resulting from dental extractions.
