CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the introduction, statement of the problem, scope and

delimitation, assumption, significance of the study, conceptual framework and

definition of terms.

Introduction

If one hopes to achieve even the simplest form of education, one must be in

the right condition (Anonymous, 2017). That means proper equipment, proper

mental state, proper motivation, and proper health condition. Any educational

establishment is obligated to do everything in their power to ensure the wellness of

their students. They must make sure that the students within their school campus

are safe, secure, and satisfied. It is common knowledge that such an establishment

must have a food source, security personnel, guidance counselors, discipline

officials, and medical personnel or a medical professional.

Sadly, some schools overlook these factors. Most schools have a canteen, at

least one guidance counselor who could also double as a discipline official, and a

security guard. This study focuses on one of the important facilities in a school,

school clinics. A school clinic must have at the very least one licensed nurse or a

medical practitioner. They will be the ones to administer medication but they are
2

Integrated Basic Education Department

not allowed to prescribe medication (NCBI, 2018). In any event of an emergency

that requires medical attention, someone who is knowledgeable about medications

and administering such must be present within the vicinity.

This study will also tackle the proper equipment and facilities that a school

clinic must have. A school clinic cannot just have a first-aid kit. A packet of

bandages, gauze pads, and some pain relievers are not enough to accommodate all

the possible needs of students.

This study aims to set a standard for what must be found in a school clinic,

ensuring that the clinic hosts the necessary equipment and facilities.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the perspective of Grade 11 STEM students of Siena

College of Taytay about their School Clinic. It aims to acquire answers for the

following questions:

1. The demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 age; and

1.2 sex?

2. How Senior High School STEM students see their school clinics in terms

of:
3

Integrated Basic Education Department

2.1 equipment;

2.2 facilities; and

2.3 medical supplies?

Scope and Delimitation

The study focuses on the completeness of the facilities, equipment and

medical supplies of the School Clinic in Siena College of Taytay. It will limit the

respondents to the Grade 11 ABM students as they are the ones who are more

frequent in the school clinic as this study was being conducted. Its possible

weakness involves the time and schedule of the participants. The research is very

time-consuming. Conflict between the schedule of respondents and researchers

leads to further adjustments and decrease in the availability of participants. The

researchers will conduct the study within a limited amount of time by giving

questionnaires to the selected Grade 11 ABM students.

Assumption

The study assumes that the respondents will answer the questionnaires

truthfully and based on their observations and experiences as patients of the School

Clinic.

Significance of the Study

4

Integrated Basic Education Department

The researchers believe that the study is note-worthy and the following will

benefit:

Future Medical Practitioners. They will gain more knowledge and information on

how to deal with different situations that they will encounter as professionals.

Future Researchers. They will find more information regarding the study. This

will help them gather data much easier and they will gain more knowledge

regarding this type of situation.

Health Clinic OIC. They will take note of the flaws and problems within the

clinic. The officer in charge might act and consider things that will improve their

clinic. This will help the environment in the clinic more suitable to the patients.

Medical Staff. The staff will notice what is lacking within the clinic. This will help

them to get a chance to improve the quality and services in their clinic and avoid

future complications.

Parents. They will be aware of what a school clinic should be offering to their kids.

The parents will be knowledgeable about services that the school clinic will help

their kids to have a better health. The proposal will give them information on what

makes a School Clinic complete and effective. This will help them ensure that their

kid’s health is safe.

Patients. They will be aware of what a school clinic should be having and offering.

The patient will be knowledgeable about services that the school clinic will help
5

them to have a better health. The proposal will give them information on what

makes a school clinic complete and effective.

The input for the research will be the respondents which are the grade 11

ABM students of Siena College of Taytay and the completeness of a school clinic

which is from the related literature and studies that supports the study. The

researchers will then formulate 21 statements for the questionnaires that will be

given and answered by the respondents. The researchers will gather the data,

organize it through tables, and analyze and interpret the data. The output of the

research is the perceptions of grade 11 ABM students of Siena College of Taytay

on the completeness of their school clinic.

Definition of Terms

Below are the list of terms and their definitions according on how they

were used in the study:

Completeness is defined as having all the necessary elements needed or lacks

nothing (Claudia S. Litvak, 2018)

Equipment is defined as anything that is needed within an area (Houghton Mifflin

Harcourt, 2014).

Facilities is defined as specific areas where different services are performed for a

purpose (Harper Collins, 2019).

Health is a person's complete physical, mental and social being, not the absence of

disease (WHO, 1948).

Medical supplies are the necessary items for the treatment of an illness or injury

(WHO, 2018).

Phenomenology is a research design done by doing depth conversation and

interviews (Husserl, 2008).

Perception is the process where the information is selected, received, organized,

and interpreted to be meaningful from the outside environment (Diksha Kashyap).

7

Integrated Basic Education Department

School clinic is a facility that is concern with the health of students and other

personnel within the school (Nile International College, 2019).

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related foreign and local literatures and studies

that support the topic.

Standards of a School Clinic

A school clinic has 7 goals, as stated in a NCBI website. This NCBI website

is dedicated to the study of school health services. These 7 goals indicate the aim

that school health services must have. Goals 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 are very important and

must be observed all the time. To summarize, these goals pertain to ensuring proper

medical attention for students within the school campus and during school hours

that students are to be monitored routinely for their health.

Furthermore, they also stated a need for a nurse or a nurse practitioner.

These school nurses are the ones who will be monitoring the students’ health. In

any given situation, he/she will be the one to administer medication and such. The

number of the school nurses or medical staff would vary depending on the location

and economic condition. A school could hire certain number of nurses based on

their need. Schools are also free to choose whether they would require their nurse to

be experienced, registered, or not. The choice is in their hands.

9

Integrated Basic Education Department

In addition, the Oakridge International School have their own school clinic

guidelines. In their site, the list of their guidelines stem from the responsibilities of

their nurse, teachers, and the students’ parents. It states that observation must start

at home. If a parent sees their child to be unfit for school due to medical reasons,

they may keep their child at home. If they observe any lack of appetite and energy

from the child, they may choose to keep him/her at home. Same goes if the child is

suspected to bear a contagious disease.

The guidelines of the OIS regarding health-related situations have specific

rules for teachers. When they see the need to send a student to the clinic during

class, they must send the student with a Hall Pass. The student will be sent back to

class if he/she does not sport any disease that requires extreme attention. Their

school nurse may administer medication, if they are doing so with proper judgment,

but prescribing medicine is out of the question.

As if agreeing to the guidelines of the OIS, the Cobb County School District

published an article about what equipment and supplies should be present in school

clinics. First, they stated that clinic personnel must have access to the emergency

information to students such as contact numbers, allergy to medicine, history of

disease, etc. In terms of equipments, clinics should have biohazard containers, file

cabinets, blood pressure cuffs of various sizes, bookcases, a refrigerator and

10

Integrated Basic Education Department

medication cabinets for proper storages. School clinics must also have a call button

or a walkie-talkie, a clock with a second hand, sink with hot and cold water, a cot,

chairs and a restroom for the patient. The clinic must also have a computer, a

cooler, eye protection or face shield, a telephone, flashlight and tweezers.

The Cobb County School District article also stated a checklist of things that

must be present in a school clinic. The list includes alcohol wipes, hydrogen

peroxide, cotton balls, paper cups, plastic medicine cups, dental floss, dental wax,

school approved disinfectants, eye pads, a first aid kit, disposable gowns, sanitary

napkins and many more. The checklist proposes various supplies that should help a

student in case of emergencies. These supplies may vary depending on the school

budget and if there are any outbreaks.

And, as an addition to the list provided by the Cobb County School District,

it can be read in the book School Clinic Regulation (2014), published by the Dubai

Health Authority, a set of regulations for their schools to follow regarding their

school clinics. It indicates that a school clinic must obtain a separate license apart

from the needed license in establishing a school. The clinic must be inspected by

government officials from the DHA before it is fully functional. It also provides a

certain clinic design requirement. A school must have a designated area for

treatment, consultation, and waiting. If there are no separate treatment or

11

Integrated Basic Education Department

observation rooms, a portable screen must be present, ensuring privacy from

opposite genders. There are also mandatory handicapped-related regulations. These

pertain to accessibility and accommodations specifically for handicapped patients.

The DHA is also clear about the responsibilities of the school

administration. These responsibilities basically cover the requirements of a school

clinic and its personnel. To summarize, they must obey DHA regulations such as

maintaining cleanliness, providing quality health services, and ensuring student

safety. The clinic must also have a list of students’ medical records to help in

administering medication. Confidentiality must also be observed.

In addition, the NCBI also stated a need for consideration of clinics to

acquire different medicines appropriate to different sexes. (2015) Hence, the same

goes for school clinics or any establishment that administers medicine to potential

and current patients. With this in mind, a school clinic must also have various

equipment and medical supplies suitable for potential needs of potential amd

current patients.

Synthesis

After obtaining such information, these suggest that having a school clinic is

equivalent to having an actual clinic within the school premises. These also suggest
12

Integrated Basic Education Department

that school clinics must avoid being understaffed and must avoid being incapable

when it comes to equipment and facilities. The clinic must be accommodating to

the needs of all ages and all sexes. In conclusion, a school clinic is an on-call clinic

amid a school campus, ready to respond to potential patients at any given time with

the proper equipment and medications.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The chapter contains research design, subject of the study, sampling

technique, locale of the study, instrument of the study, procedure of the study and

data analysis.

Research Design

The researchers used Phenomenology as its research design for them to see

the general picture of the perception of Grade 11 ABM students of SCT regarding

the completeness of their School Clinic. Phenomenology is the study of the

development of human consciousness and self-awareness as a preface to or a part of

philosophy. It is centered on participant’s experience with no regard to social,

cultural norms, traditions or preconceived ideas about the experience. It is

conducted primarily through in-depth conversations and interviews (Husserl). It is a

type of qualitative research which deals to the study of subjective lived experiences

and perspectives of respondents. The researchers used this kind of research design

because the study aims to know the perceptions and experiences of an individual,

same with their idea since the topic is about the completeness of School Clinic as

perceived by Grade 11 ABM students.

Subject of the Study

14

Integrated Basic Education Department

This research will study the Grade 11 ABM students of SCT. The reason for

choosing this population is that this strand has the highest number of students who

visited the clinic. Since this study is about the perception of grade 11 ABM students

of SCT on the completeness of their school clinic, it is also the reason for choosing

this population. According to Creswell, 1998, the recommended number of

respondents for phenomenology is 5-30. Therefore, the researchers choose 30

respondents. Five respondents each from the six sections of Grade 11 ABM.

Sampling Technique

The researchers made use of purposive sampling technique in choosing the

respondents. Purposive sampling technique is a non-probability sampling technique

used to create sample specific to the study. Sources are consulted to determine the

correct type of respondents the researchers need to gather data from.

Locale of the Study

The study is done in SCT School Health Clinic. It is a school health center

located at E. Rodriguez Ave., Taytay, Rizal, 1920. SCT started in 1957 with a

limited number of medical specialists and paramedical staff. Now, they have

different kinds of medical practitioners that offer and provide different kinds of

health-related programs and services. It continuously remains an environment

15

Integrated Basic Education Department

which patients get adequate and decent medical services within their reach,

physically and financially.

Instrument of the Study

The researchers will use a questionnaire in gathering the necessary data for

this research. The questionnaire given to the respondents are carefully formulated

to gather factual statements or different opinions relating to a specific topic. It can

be classified as both, qualitative and quantitative method depending on the nature

of questions. The answers obtained in using questionnaires are analyzed using

quantitative or qualitative methods and they involve discussions and critical

analyses without the use of numbers and calculations.

The researchers made use of questionnaires because it makes the collection

of data faster and easier. It has low or no cost requirement, and higher level of

objectivity compared to many alternative methods in data collection. It is also

because the respondents can easily express themselves through writing and more

complex thinking.

Procedure of the Study

In formulating this study, the researchers started by brainstorming and

sharing of ideas and then came up with this topic. After that, the researchers looked

for foreign and local literature and studies to support the topic. The researchers then
16

Integrated Basic Education Department

formulated a statement of the problem and title for the research. Chapter 1, The

Problem and its Background, chapter 2, Review of Related Literature and Studies,

and chapter 3, Research Methodology, is then formulated. The researchers then

carefully chose the respondents to answer the questionnaire. The researchers will

give questionnaires to the respondents to gain data needed for their research. The

data will be then recorded and analyzed.

Data Analysis

After gathering and analyzing the data from the questionnaires, the

researchers will then review the answers of the respondents. They will create a

table showing the percentage of the data. The researchers will group the answers

from the respondents in one table to organize the data. Each gathered data will be

analyzed and interpreted by the researchers together with its related literature and

study.

The researchers will only use one method to know the result. The

Frequency Distribution is a list, table or graph that displays the frequency of

various outcomes in a sample. It is a way to organize and analyze a qualitative data

that has been procured during the data gathering procedure. It also comprises of

distinct values of the observations, tally mark, and frequency divided into columns.

To find the percentage the researchers used the formula below:

17

Integrated Basic Education Department

P=f/n * 100%
Where:

P = Percent

f = Frequency (number of answers)

N = Number of respondents

After the data is organized and analyzed the researchers will then give

meaning and significance to the data

The table presents the sex distribution of the respondents of the study. As

shown above on the table, the number of male respondents is 15 or 50% of the total

number of respondents and female respondents which is also 15 or 50%, with a

total of 30 respondents combined. It is evidently shown that there are equal number

of distribution in terms of the sex of the respondents in the study.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summarization, the interpretation of the

researchers, and the recommendations of the researchers in concern with the study

and the data gathered by the researchers.

Summary

 The respondents are chosen carefully and can be divided equally to both

sexes. This choice was made for the sake of accuracy of the research as both

sexes have different needs that must be met by the school clinic.

 The respondents share their opinions by answering a closed questionnaire

regarding the clinic equipment. Their equipment refers to file cabinets,

thermometer’s, chairs, refrigerators and other relevant appliances and

furniture. Most of the respondents responded positively while others were

rather negative about it. The researchers have gathered data that some

respondents do not agree to the statements that point out to the presence of

such equipment.

 In terms of facilities, most respondents have responded positively,

indicating that some either don’t see or don’t realize the presence of

facilities that are present for their comfort and needs.

 Most respondents reacted positively to the presence of much needed

medicinal drugs and other necessities that were made available to them. On
24

Integrated Basic Education Department

the other side, some of the respondents claim to either the absence of these

drugs or they weren’t made available to them.

Conclusions

 In conclusion, the researchers found it necessary to take information from

both sexes. Like the information that the DHA has provided, both sexes

have various needs specific to them and having a balanced amount of both

sexes as respondents ensures that the information they gather would be

equal from both sexes. Hence, the point of view of both sexes with different

needs are considered.

 Data suggest that the school clinic would either be incomplete when it

comes to equipment or that this equipment is not made available to some of

them. In comparison, the Cobb County School District (2014) has published

a list of equipment that must be present in a clinic and the researchers can

conclude that the equipment of the SCT school clinic still has room for

improvement to provide better service for the students at their care.

 The researchers conclude that the school clinic provides the proper facilities

for their potential patients. Similar to what the DHA (2014) has provided in

one of the books they have published, the school clinic provides a waiting

area, a treatment area, and making sure that these areas are separate to

provide privacy from the opposite sex. Under the circumstances that some
25

Integrated Basic Education Department

respondents agree to this and some don’t, the researchers can conclude that

this is because they don’t realize the presence of these areas.

 Similar to what the DHA (2014) and Cobb County School District (2014)

has provided, the SCT school clinic possesses various types of medicinal

drugs to aid in various types of injuries, illnesses and whatnot. The

researchers then conclude that, despite some of the respondents disagreeing

to the completeness of the clinic regarding medicinal drugs, that the SCT

school clinic provides enough amount and variety of medicinal drugs that

are ready for their potential patients. The researchers still consider the data

they’ve gathered that some respondents do not agree with the other

respondents. These respondents have disagreed on the fact that the school

clinic provides various medicinal drugs to treat their patients.

Recommendations

For the future medical practitioners, to consult various references, like

this study, before engaging in establishing a medical facility of their own.

This ensures the effectiveness of the establishment, thus helping your career

in the long run.

For the future researchers, to be thorough and specific when conducting

similar studies. Avoid being vague so as to not conceal information that

maybe crucial to your study.

26

Integrated Basic Education Department

For the health clinic OIC, to ensure that the medical supplies are sustained

and that the patients they consult and treat receive the best quality of

medication that the clinic can practically offer.

For the medical staff, to be careful in administering medication and ensure

that patients are comfortable whilst being held within the facility for

treatment. Not all of the patients receive the treatment that is appropriate

therefore the staff must think twice when conducting any medical operation.

For the parents, to be vigilant in checking if the school clinic that will be

held accountable for their child hosts any specific medicine or medical

equipment that their child might need. If such medicine is not found in the

clinic, they must be responsible enough to have their child carry enough

dosage to get them through the day and must have specific instructions for

the school clinic or for their child's teachers.

For the patients , to be observant and cooperative rather than being

ignorant about their surroundings. One might think that their school clinic is

understaffed or does not contain the necessities but may be mistaken for

lack of observation
