MATHS COMPLEX NUMBERS AND QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
Exercise: 5.1

Q.1: Express the following complex number in x + iy form; ( 4i) (-{i)

Sol:

(4i) (-{i) =-4x{xixi=-7i2 =-7(-1) [Since,i 2 =-1)

=7

Q.2: Express the following complex number in x + iy form; i19 +i

9

Sol:

i19 + i9 = i4x2+1 + i4x4+3 = (i4)2. i + (i4)4. i3

=1 x i +1x (-i) [ Since, i4 = 1, i3 = -1)

= i + (-i)

=O

Q.3: Express the following complex number in x + iy form; i-39

Sol:
2
·-39 =2·-4x9-3 = (2"4) -9 ·2·-3

= (1 t 9 • i- 3 [ Since, i4 = 1 ]

= 13 = 1 [Since,i3 = -i ]
i -i

= -i = -i =i [ Since, i2 = -1 ]
;2 -1

Q.4: Express the following complex number in x + iy form; 5(6 +Si)+ i(6 +
Si)

Sol:

5(6 + Si) + i(6 + Si) = 30 + 30i + 6i + 6i2

= 30 + 36i + 6(-1) [ Since, i2 = -1)

= 30- 6 + 36i

= 24 + 36i
1 • ·1

✓2)Y = 2Y
y
=?- ( =?- 22 = y

=> y = 2y => 2y - y = 0 => y = 0

Therefore, there is only one integral solution 0.

Q.19: If (s + it) (u + iv) (w + ix) (y + iz) = X + iY, then prove that:

Sol:

Here, (s + it) (u + iv) (w + ix) (y + iz) = X + iY

Therefore, l(s + it)(u + iv)(w + ix)(y + iz)I = IX + iYI

j(s + it)j x j(u + iv)j x j(w + ix)j x j(y + iz)j = jX + iYj [because iz1z2i = iz1 I iz2ii

⇒ ✓s + t 2 2
x ✓u + v
2 2
x ✓w + x
2 2
x Jy2 +z
2
= ✓x + y
2 2

Now, on squaring both the sides, we will get:

Hence,Proved

Q.20: Find the least positive value of x for the following:

l+i
( 1-, )x = l

Sol:

* ( 1 + i: + 2i r = 1

Hence, x = 4m, where m belongs to Z.

Thus, the least positive integer = 1

Therefore, the least positive integral for given problem = x = 4m = 4 x 1 = 4
