CPT-LOGGER “A” DIGITIZER

The CPT-Logger “A” is the heart of the data acquisition system for geotechnical and environmental
testing procedures, such as CPT testing. It is to be used in combination with a standard laptop or
industrial computer and CPT data acquisition software, such as CPT-Explorer or Geo-Explorer.

The CPT-Logger “A” combines the following functions:

• It supplies power to the attached cones, measuring heads, adapters, and alike
• It digitizes the incoming analogue signals
• It conditions the incoming digital signals from independent components (e.g. the depth
synchronisation)
• It synchronizes all data for processing on attached computer

1 General Description

The CPT-Logger “A” is compatible with all electrical CPT cones (both compression and subtraction
type), electrical measuring heads, environmental and seismic adapters. The high-grade waterproof
housing makes the unit extremely suitable for working in the field, the compact design assures the use
of little space.

It processes simultaneously up to 8 analogue and 4 digital data signals, such as:

● Cone resistance ● Local sleeve friction ● Inclination ● Pore pressure
● Penetration depth ● Date and time ● Temperature ● Fuel fluorescence
● Electrical permittivity ● Electrical conductivity ● Redox potential ● Acidity (pH)

5 Important Notice

Make sure you only use the original power lead or power unit supplied with this product. The CPT-
Logger is to be powered by a direct current ranging between 12 and 30 Vdc. In case the power supply
drops below 10.5 Vdc the recording of CPT data is stopped and the following alarm is given; the green
indicator light left of the power button and the red “Alarm” indicator light will blink.

In order to re-start the CPT procedure again, please re-adjust the power supply to a value between 12
and 30 Vdc. Push the power button to switch off the CPT-Logger and switch it back on again. Now you
have reset the alarm.

The CPT-Explorer and Geo-Explorer data acquisition software offer the possibility to program default
alarm values for several parameters. As soon as a preset value is surpassed, the red “Alarm” indicator
light will blink and, in case the CPT-Logger is connected to the control unit of the CPT penetrometer
pushing rig, the CPT procedure is stopped. The machine must be equipped with this option and must
also be provided with a reset button. The Geo-Explorer software does not stop, only the main screen
background colour turns in to red. By pressing the "reset alarm button" the background colour will
return normal.

The CPT-Logger “A” only meets the IP65 waterproof conditions when all connectors are attached and
the unused sockets are covered using the right sealing caps.

Mount the CPT-Logger using the 4 holes on the outside of the housing. There is no need to open the
CPT-Logger since there are no mounting points inside.

6 Warning: Electrical Shock Hazard

The CPT-Logger A is used with a permanent 12 Vdc energy source. Input and/or output terminals may
still be energized, even when the equipment is switched off. Always switch off the equipment and
remove the power supply before carrying out maintenance or servicing the product.

The CPT-Logger A has no internal user-serviceable components. Do not attempt to open the CPT-
Logger A or operate the product in case parts are not in place. All servicing must be undertaken by
Gouda Geo personnel only.

Whenever it is likely that the grounding protection or any other connected cable has been damaged,
the product must be switched off and secured against unintended operation; please contact qualified
service staff.

7 Maintenance, Repair and Calibration

A CPT-Logger “A” is to be calibrated every 6 months by Gouda-Geo, even when it has not been used.
A calibration certificate is valid for a period of maximum 6 months. Because of temperature changes,
shocks and induced stress it is possible that the calibration values will shift beyond the acceptable
offset.

In general a CPT-Logger “A” that comes in for maintenance and re-calibration will be returned to the
customer within 2 working days, exempt special or very extensive repairs. A repaired CPT-Logger “A”
is checked according to a checklist before returning. The re-calibrated CPT-Logger “A” will be returned
with a signed calibration certificate.
