2 AVEVA E3D Model Conversion

The conversion process from E3D projects to S3D projects comprises three stages:

Design Project stage Create the correct model and catalogues in E3D.

Conversion stage Create mapping data in AVEVA E3D Model Conversion.

Post Conversion stage Carry out post conversion tasks in E3D.

The conversion process is not totally automatic, large parts of the work will still depends on
skills and experience. With the mapping data being the most important task to be carried
out. The quality of the converted project depends on the quality of the mapping and the
current limitations of both E3D and S3D. Refer to Limitations for further information.
Conversion can be carried out on three levels:

Low Exports only the volumetric geometry (graphics) from the

E3D project to S3D.

Medium Exports the volumetric geometry for each element along

with the hierarchy from the E3D project to the S3D project.

High Exports the full model from the E3D project which then
displays and behaves in S3D as if it was created in the
software.

AVEVA E3D Model Conversion can be used for the following disciplines:
• Electrical
• Hangers and Supports
• HVAC
• Piping
• Structures.

AVEVA E3D Model Conversion

2.1 Limitations
The following are the known AVEVA E3D Model Conversion limitations:
• Only new elements are added to the model hierarchy (at this moment in time,
incremental translation of the model is not supported).
• Elements removed from the E3D project are not considered.
• Modified elements in the E3D project are ignored.
• New none primary elements (valves) are not considered.
• The recommended approach is to delete the existing site then recreate from scratch.
• AVEVA Model Convertor will require a restart when switching from an imperial project
to a metric one.

Post processing required

Note: S3D work breakdown structure is more flexible that E3D.

• SITE ZONE for E3D

• AREA UNIT PIPINGSYSTEM

AVEVA E3D Model Conversion User Guide
AVEVA E3D Model Conversion

AVEVA E3D Model Conversion maps:

• SITE to AREA
• ZONE to UNIT
• PIPINGSYSTEM not covered

Element mapping limitations:

• Panels - there is no obvious equivalent for panels in S3D
• Mapped to prismatic shape (express extrusion)
• Intermediate equipment hierarchy is required
• PFIT not recognised
• FITTINGS (PFITT, FITT, CMPF and so on)
• Catalogues are not recreated
• Positive geometries are expressed as imported shapes (SAT)
• Negative geometries are not recreated
• Converted 3D model contain clashes
• Beams with DESPARA
• Exported as EQUI + PRIMITIVES
• Structural Joints (SJOI, PJOI)
• Logical connections are created
• Positive geometries expressed as imported shapes (SAT)
• Scheduled information needs to be post processed (Excel export/import)
• Schedule information is currently stored in SDTE in the existing catalogue projects
• PD can be investigated if required (this would be based on WTHTAB and PDAREF
attributes)
• Piping Insulation
• The mapping approach is mandatory
• The mapping table is defined using the AVEVA E3D Model Conversion UI
• Insulation tables have to exist in S3D defaults
• Excel (xls files) generation
• If too many E3D specifications are intended to be generated at once, an out of
memory exception is raised. Therefore ten specifications is the optimum
• Customised SKEY is not considered
• Blue rectangle in the S3D ISO output.

2.2 Conversion recommendations and requirements

• Conversion stage (E3D)
• Conversion stage (S3D)
• Post conversion (S3D)

Conversion stage (E3D)

• Any component description over 256 characters long will be truncated.
• Avoid any ghost elements (primitives with null volume, panels with the wrong loop
definition and so on).

© Copyright 2012 to current year. AVEVA Solutions Limited and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved. 2:3
AVEVA E3D Model Conversion User Guide
AVEVA E3D Model Conversion

• Avoid unset spref/catref attributes although unset spref attributes are allowable for
SJOI and PJOI, refer to Limitations for further information.
• Write access to the first DESIGN DB is required, temporary elements need to be
created and Savework is not required.
• A suitable MDB with all the required catalogue information should be used.
• For best results in the piping discipline, avoid manual reconnections.
• Check data consistencies
• Ppoints should share the same origin and have an opposite direction.
• Offset tolerance = 0.
• Angle < 0.001.
• PFIT export, POS and DRPS attributes can cause issues, refer to Macros for E3D for
further information.

Conversion stage (S3D)

• Create an empty S3D project.
• Backup is strongly recommended.
• Load a catalogue.
• Design load.
• Register the generic PdmsSymbol dll, refer to S3D for further information.

Post conversion (S3D)

• Generate a Piping.xml file.
• Open isometric style option browser.
• Import data file for the SymbolMap.
• Import the Piping.xml file (merge with standard file).
• Generate ISOS sheets to check the conversion quality.
• Rearrange the PDBS/WBS to match up with S3D best practices.
• Manually reconnect piping connections.

2.3 Macros for E3D

At this moment in time, it is only possible to correctly position primitives when the POS
attribute value is equal to DRPS attribute value. However sometimes attributes for POS and
DRPS for PFIT have different values, to accommodate this use the following macro.
var !col collect all PFIT
do ! var values(!col)
!posDRPS = DRPS of $!V
!obj = $!V
!obj.POS = !posDRPS
enddo
