CROP PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY FOR OLIVE

• The production technology for over-coming the problem of

unfruitfulness in olive has been standardized upto the extent of its
commercialization. Following recommendations have been made and
suitably added in the package of practices for making the olive
culture viable/profitable in Jammu province.
• Nutrition:
i. Nitrogenous fertilizer should be applied in three split doses, viz.,
immediately after harvest, onset of spring season and in the
beginning of rainy season.
ii. Apply 200 g borax per tree in alternate years.
iii. In drought prone areas, two foliar spray of urea (1.0%) and boric
acid (0.4%) should be applied during pre bloom and post bloom,
respectively.
• Irrigation
i. In autumn, apply two irrigations immediately after harvest, at an
interval of 20 days.
ii. Apply two irrigation four weeks prior to expected time of
flowering which ensures adequate development of flowers and lower
down the flower bud abscission.
iii. The tree should be irrigated after two weeks of the peak bloom
period as it improves fruit set.
iv. One irrigation should be given a month after fruit set to stimulate
development of fruit and reduce fruit drop.
• Pollinizer
Pollinizer variety should be 20-25% of the whole plantation and 2-3
cultivars having synchronized flowering period should be planted.
• Pruning
Prune ¼ of old wood every year and keep the centre of tree open.
The outcome of this technological development has encourage
the fruit growers for getting more area under olive culture.

TOP WORKING IN OLIVE

• In the month of November/December, the plantation to be top
worked is initially cleared of unwanted bushes/trees.
• The trees are headed back in the month of December leaving with
branch, diameter ranging between 1.5 cm to 5 cm.
• The wild olive trees selected for top working are terraced and
basins prepared around the trees.
• The cut surfaces of the trees are covered with a paste of Bordeaux
mixture.
• FYM is applied @ 20 kg/tree and @ 225 g/tree and P and K @
150 g/tree in December/January.
• For top working, side veneer method of grafting is recommended.
• The grafting should be carried anywhere between 29th of June to
10th of July.
• Scion wood material should be one year old, healthy and disease
free.

STANDARDIZATION OF TIME OF PLANTING AND

MULCHING IN STRAWBERRY
• For sub-tropical conditions of Jammu, the best time for planting
of strawberry cv. Chandler is 9th October coupled with black
polythene mulching.

ENHANCEMENT OF SHELF LIFE IN STRAWBERRY

• 0.6 % CaCl2 is helpful in extending shelf-life of strawberry cv.
Chandler by 2.5 days as against control (1.58 days) under ambient
condition.
• A foliar spray of 0.4 % FeSO4 increased vegetative growth, while
0.4 % ZnSO4 resulted in quality fruit production.

AIR LAYERING IN LITCHI

• Litchi layers treated with IBA 500 ppm in the first week of
August and planted in polythene bags of size 22 cm x 10 cm x 8
cm filled with the soil of litchi orchard has been found most
suitable technique for getting maximum rooting, survival
percentage with least time taken for rooting.

REJUVENATION TECHNOLOGY
• Complete rejuvenation technology has been developed and
demonstrated on the farmer’s field along with calender of
operations to be carried out for rejuvenated mango/guava plants.

STANDARDIZATION OF MATURITY INDICES OF

SUB-TROPICAL FRUITS OF JAMMU REGION
• Maturity indices for subtropical fruit crops such as mango, guava,
aonla and peach have been standardized and its importance as
well as the best time for harvesting these fruit crops has been
briefed to the orchardists/fruit growers of Jammu province. They
have also been educated about the importance of grading to get
good price of their produce.
