Grade 9 Level PART OF SPEECH: ADVERB Second Quarter

ADVERBS

Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. Adverbs answer the questions what,
where, when, or how often.
Examples:
A. Adverb modifying verb
1. We walked slowly.
2. Few cars run smoothly.
3. The dog ran away.
B. Adverb modifying adjective
1. The sky was fairly clear.
2. The girls are very graceful.
3. The woman swam extremely fast.
C. Adverb modifying another adverb
1. Joe talked rather quietly.
2. Many people drive too fast.

KINDS OF ADVERBS

1. Adverb of Manner
This adverb that tells how the action denoted by the verb is done. It answers the question “how”.
Examples:
1. The first ever reigning Miss Universe for the Philippines, Gloria Diaz, congratulated
the newly crowned Miss Universe ...
2. Margarita Moran, the Philippines’ second reigning Miss Universe, was immaculately
dressed in white during the pageant.
3. Pia Wurtzbach, who is the third Miss Universe Philippines, is confidently beautiful
with a heart.
4. The street children in the slums of Metro Manila joyfully welcomed Catriona Gray,
the fourth Miss Philippines beauty queen who won the title Miss Universe.
 Adverb of Time – adverb that tells when the action takes time
Example:
1. His brother arrived yesterday.
2. They are coming soon.
 Adverb of Place – adverb that tells where the action takes place
Examples:
1. The monk slept there.
2. He went somewhere.
 Adverb of Degree – adverb that tells the degree of the verbs denoted (so, much, more, most, quite,
fairly, mainly, greatly)
Examples:
1. This car is too expensive.
2. The show was quite impressive.
 Adverb of Frequency – describes or modifies a word as to frequency of action or event (often, always,
seldom, occasionally, usually)
Examples:
1. How often do you go to the market?
2. I always come to school early.
 Adverb of Negation – negative statements
Examples:
1. Never say goodbye.
2. Cheating is strictly not allowed.
 Adverb of Affirmation – positive statements
